Leading adaptive change in the times we are
in requires taking care of yourself. Taking
care of yourself is not self-indulgence. The
world needs you to be at the top of your
game. And you cannot be at the top of your
game if you have not had a good night’s
sleep, eaten well, had some exercise and,
yes, received the love and affection of family
and friends to feel like a whole person.
If you care about education…take care of
yourself…

Sustaining Leadership practice involves a
duty of care towards the ‘self’. Not easy.
Self caring is a pre-requisite for ethical
practice and for being effective in the
interpersonal and community focused
aspects of the role. Senge 2005
Caring for ‘self’ is within the ‘gift of the
leader’

• It’s not self indulgence.
• It needs time and space.
• Schedule it.
• Put it on staff agenda for
ALL.
Self care.
Introduction background.
Not and expert on this one/ but am experienced.
Takes years to appreciate the importance of ‘looking after yourself’. When staff/ others remind you of its importance, then you know, you haven’t got it right either! From time to time we all ‘fall down’ on this issue. Do listen to others who care about you, when they advise you to ‘look after yourself’
Different roles different/ different demands?
Deputy/ principal/ different levels of concerns.
Role of Principal/ personalities of principals: ‘Fixer’/ carer
?Who cares for the carer?
Activity slides one and two are done together time for activity including feedback should take 15mins approx. Aim to lead participants to reflection on self- care.

Realisation that self care is crucial to ‘system care’.
Do we put ourselves last?
Why?
Think about the support systems that exist.
Discussion/information
‘GET OUT’/ mix/ network/ ‘its good to talk’
Don’t under estimate the importance of ‘leaving IT behind’ for a day or 2.
All participants fill in online. Anonymous and results are shared
Hope to show that we are all at highs and lows depending on the time of day etc.
Also show that we are all facing the same fears
Emotions ‘swing’ from day to day/ event to event/ teacher to teacher/ minute to minute.
Acknowledge what this might be doing ‘under the bonnet’.
Reflective exercise
Participants draw and fill in on their own. Advise them to keep that Wheel image close to the front of their head at all times. Get someone to keep them reminded of the ‘balance’ needed.
Discussion leading to the big rocks presentation.
Good Manager/ bad Manager.
Important to prioritise what matters in life
Fill sand and small rocks and then try to fill the big rocks
Values
Self Care (me time)
Relationships
Everything will fit almost but i cannot get me in.
Then fill it properly
It is not a good idea to fill to the top so 80% capacity
Need room for the busy days, also in terms of staff there should not be an expectation that they are working to full capacity all the time there needs to be room to take on the busy day.
Demonstrate this by pouring in water that or more sand.
Discussion in relation to time management.
Delegate / share it/ Some issues CAN wait.
What if more research was to prove it’s a self indulgence …so what!
