After starting hairdressing at
the tender age of 14 in Turkey,
Sam developed a natural flair for
hairdressing without any formal
qualifications. “Back in Turkey
there was no hairdressing education
available. In my 1st, 2nd and 3rd year
it was just hands on from the word
go and I gained experience and learnt
on the job. I picked it up very quickly”
says Sam. “Of course, when I came to
Australia 19 years ago I got my formal
qualifications.”
Sam has 30 years of hairdressing
experience and is as passionate
today about his work than ever. When
asked how he got into hairdressing,
Sam lets out a little chuckle - “You
would never believe how… When I
was about 10 years old I had really
spiky hair, you know like a porcupine
and unlike today, back in those days
having spiky hair was not fashionable,
so my father took me to get it cut. Back then they used a
manual cutting machine that kind of half cut and half
tore out your hair. It really hurt and I hated having it done!
I remembered thinking to myself, there has to be some
other way so I guess that’s how I became interested.”
Laughing, he recalls how he used to deal with his spiky
hair problem “ I would use lemons on my hair and put
womens’ pantyhose on my head and sleep with them
overnight to help flatten it, although moisture would
make it stick right back up again like I just got out of
bed.”
After working in a salon in Burwood and owning a
salon in Five Dock for 4 years, Sam decided to move
to his shop in Drummoyne where he has been for
the last 6 years because of the position. “People come
recommended rather than walking by. The way I see it
is that a busy hair salon in a busy shopping area with
lots of passing trade is good but a busy salon on a quieter
street with less passing trade is something else,” says
Sam. “We’ve had client loyalty for 10 – 15 years.”
Although specialising in all aspects of hairdressing,
cutting and colour is what people come back to see
Sam for. “The most important thing is the end result and
ensuring customers feel better when they leave the salon
than when they came in, whether that be correcting their
hair or just an amazing blow dry.”
They also have the Brazilian Hair Straightening
System that will condition, strengthen hair and not cause
it to break. “As 95% of Australians have damaged hair,
straightening is generally not recommended, however
this one is suitable.” Another great reason to head into

Being the creatures of habit that we are,
so many of us keep the same hair colour
and style for years without a change purely
because we know that “look” suits us. As they say, changing
or updating your hairstyle is as good as a holiday. It instantly
makes you feel better whenever you’re feeling a bit down or
bored with your hair. Whether you’re ready for a brand new
look or just a subtle change, choosing the right hairdresser
can be daunting. Try one these top Inner West hair experts
for the answers.

little practice, can learn if they put their mind to it. On
the other hand others, like Sam Tufan from Sam Hair

QI want to get a new haircut but I
don’t know how to explain to the
hairdresser what look I’d like. How can I
make sure I get the look I want?
Daniela, Burwood
AHave a clear idea on what kind
of hairstyle you’re after and
look through magazines for pictures
and examples. That will give your
hairdresser a good indication of what
you want. Be realistic when selecting
pictures. Try to choose styles you think
will suit you and be prepared and open
minded if your hairdresser suggests a
different style for you than what you
have chosen. Your haircut should be
individual to you based on your lifestyle,
face shape, bone structure and hair
texture. At your consultation, use the
time to communicate what you really
want. A highly qualified hairdresser will
recommend a style and colour that will
not only suit you best but will also be
easy for you to maintain. The colour of
your hair is secondary to getting the cut
right and should suit your complexion,
eye colour and skin tone. Good luck!
QMy hair is really weak and
damaged with a lot of split ends
and generally just looks dull and lifeless.
What can I do to improve it?
Anne, Rozelle
ADepending on how long it’s been
neglected for, you may need a few
visits to the hairdresser to correct any
long term damage caused, but there
are some things you can do to help
restore the vitality in your hair such
as treatments. These are good if you
heat style a lot. Always use a heat
protectant spray before blow drying,
curling or straightening and use a good
quality treatment or leave in mask once
a week. Eating foods containing Omega
3 (found in fish), protein (found in nuts),
zinc (found in meat), and biotin (found in
oats) will help keep your hair shiny and
strong. Make sure you keep your hair
clean. Greasy hair can block hair follicles
preventing hair growth. Drinking plenty
of water to hydrate and taking hair skin
and nail vitamin supplements will also
help.
