My Questionnaire Analysis
I recently sent out twenty questionnaires to my target audience (11-15) to wider my
understanding and knowledge of what young teens look for and admire in a pop
magazine in today’s society.
My first question was: ‘Who is your favourite girl/boy band?’
My participants were asked to circle their answers from a possible six choices. I had
various replies to this such as
· One Direction, who received 12/20 votes, this was the most popular choice.
· The Wanted received 7/20 votes and
· Union J with only 1 vote.
· Next, The Saturdays received 3 out of 20, being the lowest.
· Little Mix scoring the most with 9/20
· Girls Aloud close to them with 8/20.
I was surprised Girls Aloud received more votes than The Saturdays as Girls Aloud are a
much older band who also haven’t produced new music in a while. As One Direction
received the largest amounts of votes it made me realise that my target audience enjoy
boy bands and their music, therefore I took into consideration using a boy band inside
my magazine. It was the larger boy bands which received the most votes too, as Union
J only received one vote, they are a smaller band compared to One Direction, so if I
was to include a boy band inside my magazine I would use a five member band.
My next question was: ‘Who is your favourite female pop artist?’
· Katy Perry received 3/20
· Taylor Swift had just 2/20
· Rihanna had the most with 7/20
· Cheryl Cole with 3/20
· Both Ariana Grande and Pixie Lott received 0/20
· Finally, Miley Cyrus received 5/20
From this, I realised the more controversial female artists such as Miley Cyrus, received the
most amount of votes. Therefore, the female artist on my three magazine pieces must
look confident and striking, sure to make an impression on my Target Audience.
Next, I asked; who is your favourite male pop artist?
· Justin Bieber received 6/20
· Jason Derulo received only 2/20
· Conor Maynard received 0/20
· Sam Smith had the most with 8/20
· Finally, Usher received 4/20
Using these results, I realised it would be certain to include a good looking, handsome and
young male artist on my front cover as my target audience would want to look at them and
be interested to find out and read about the artist.
‘What do you like the most about music magazines?’ was my fourth question, there was a
possible five answers the participants could choose from.
● ‘The Images’ was the first possible choice which half of my participants chose (10/20)
● · ‘The Celebrity Gossip’ was the second choice, 3/20 participants circled this.
● · ‘The Free Gifts’ received only 2/20, which I was surprised about as a free gift is
usually seen as eye catching and would make the magazine seem more appealing
● ‘The Advice section’ received 1/20 votes.
● · ‘Upcoming artists and music’ received 4/20.
As the images received the highest vote it was important for my three pieces to be filled with
images, as they would be interesting to look at and would give my magazine lots of colour.
I was then interested to find out ‘How much’ my target audience would be prepared to pay for a
music magazine.
● 2/20 said they would pay ‘Under £1.50’
● 5/20 said £1.50-£1.99
● 12/20 said ‘£2.00-£2.99’. This is the average price of a music magazine
therefore, I was happy this was the most common. Also, from this research it
made me feel confident my price of my magazine was perfect.
● Finally, only 1 person said they would be prepared to pay ‘£3.00+’
Next, I was intrigued to understand how much my target audience actually listen to
pop music.
● A massive 19/20 said they listen to pop music ‘everyday’
● Only one participant said they listened to it ‘weekly’ this showed me how
young people listen to pop music regularly which made me reconsider
how often I should distribute my magazine and whether it should be sent
out weekly or monthly, to ensure my target audience are revealed with
new and upcoming pop music they could find out about and listen to.
I then asked, ‘Do you enjoy reading pop magazines?’ positively, every single
questionnaire revealed that everyone enjoyed reading pop magazines. Which made me
feel confident about producing a magazine linked to this genre! However, it also made
me aware of the strong competition of the two existing pop magazines, ‘We Love Pop’
and ‘Top Of The Pops’ highlighting their huge and loyal target audience.
My final question was an open question, as I felt I should include at least one question
where my target audience had the chance to reveal their own opinion and so that I
could see the variety in what people like, or if there was not several different answers I
was excited to see if there were many people who like the same things. The question
was; ‘Who would you like to see on the front cover of a pop magazine?’
I had a fairly mixed answer to this question;
● 5 out of the 20 participants all said they would like to see Justin Bieber on the
front of the magazine as he is attractive and many of them liked his music and
had a few of his albums.
● Another person said they would like to see Girls Aloud on the cover of a
magazine as they have not been in a pop magazine for a while and they said
they would like to hear what they are up to now.
● 6 other people suggested a new artist to feature on the front who they have
never seen before, which I thought was interesting as this is unusual for pop
magazines.
● 7 people then suggested to see Rihanna on the cover of a magazine as they look
at her for style tips and ideas.
● Finally, 1 person suggested to see Union J on the front, they explained that they
have been loyal to their music since there leave in the X Factor and said they
were a big fan.
In conclusion, I am happy I had the chance to distribute my questionnaires as it has
given me a fantastic opportunity to wider my knowledge of pop music magazines from
the audience that buys them. It has also given me ideas about my magazine and how I
can make it the best it can be.

I was then interested to find out ‘How much’ my target audience would be prepared to pay for a music magazine. ● 2/20 said they would pay ‘Under £1.50’ ● 5/20 said £1.50-£1.99 ● 12/20 said ‘£2.00-£2.99’. This is the average price of a music magazine therefore, I was happy this was the most common. Also, from this research it made me feel confident my price of my magazine was perfect. ● Finally, only 1 person said they would be prepared to pay ‘£3.00+’

Next, I was intrigued to understand how much my target audience actually listen to pop music. ● A massive 19/20 said they listen to pop music ‘everyday’ ● Only one participant said they listened to it ‘weekly’ this showed me how young people listen to pop music regularly which made me reconsider how often I should distribute my magazine and whether it should be sent out weekly or monthly, to ensure my target audience are revealed with new and upcoming pop music they could find out about and listen to. I then asked, ‘Do you enjoy reading pop magazines?’ positively, every single questionnaire revealed that everyone enjoyed reading pop magazines. Which made me feel confident about producing a magazine linked to this genre! However, it also made me aware of the strong competition of the two existing pop magazines, ‘We Love Pop’ and ‘Top Of The Pops’ highlighting their huge and loyal target audience. My final question was an open question, as I felt I should include at least one question where my target audience had the chance to reveal their own opinion and so that I could see the variety in what people like, or if there was not several different answers I was excited to see if there were many people who like the same things. The question was; ‘Who would you like to see on the front cover of a pop magazine?’ I had a fairly mixed answer to this question; ● 5 out of the 20 participants all said they would like to see Justin Bieber on the front of the magazine as he is attractive and many of them liked his music and had a few of his albums. ● Another person said they would like to see Girls Aloud on the cover of a magazine as they have not been in a pop magazine for a while and they said they would like to hear what they are up to now. ● 6 other people suggested a new artist to feature on the front who they have never seen before, which I thought was interesting as this is unusual for pop magazines. ● 7 people then suggested to see Rihanna on the cover of a magazine as they look at her for style tips and ideas. ● Finally, 1 person suggested to see Union J on the front, they explained that they have been loyal to their music since there leave in the X Factor and said they

In conclusion, I am happy I had the chance to distribute my questionnaires as it has given me a fantastic opportunity to wider my knowledge of pop music magazines from the audience that buys them. It has also given me ideas about my magazine and how I can make it the best it can be.
