2. Female urethra
• In females urethra is relatively short (4cm) which predisposes them to
urinary tract infections.
• The urethra begins at the neck of the bladder and passes inferiorly
through pelvic floor and opens into the perineum.
• Urethral orifice is located 2-3cm anterior to vagina.

4. Arterial supply
• Internal pudendal
artery (branch of
internal Iliac artery)

5. Venous drainage
• Internal pudendal vein

6. Nerve supply
• Vesical plexus and
pudendal nerve.

7. Lymphatic drainage
• Proximal urethra in internal Iliac lymph nodes
• Distal urethra in superficial inguinal lymph nodes.

8. Male urethra
• Is approximately 15-20cm long
• In addition to urine it carries semen
• Male urethra is divided into 4 parts:
1. Preprostatic
2. Prostatic
3. Membraneous
4. Spongy

• Internal Iliac lymph nodes – prostatic and membraneous urethra
• Superficial and deep inguinal lymph nodes – spongy urethra
