1. AoC London Region Members’ Bulletin
10 May 2013 – Issue 135
Dear Colleagues
It has been an extremely busy period for all of us and I will highlight just some of the priorities
of the last two weeks.
The VP Curriculum and Quality Network, chaired by Jane O’Neil (the College of Haringey,
Enfield and North East London), met on 29th April. The meeting was mainly devoted to
considering Ofsted inspections and the improvement agenda with Joy Mercer (our AOC
National Director of Policy) presenting some excellent insights on the basis of the national as
well as London picture. In terms of external contributors Alex Morris from BIS joined part of
the meeting to seek feedback on proposals for new government data to track students into
employment.
The quarterly meeting of Regional Committee Principals with the Deputy Mayor and GLA took
place on 2nd May. This was most timely as the London Enterprise Panel Jobs and Growth Plan
for London was published on this very day. I would draw everyone’s attention to the plan
overall and priority one in particular around Skills and Employment. You will see this includes
a commitment to a bi-annual Skills and Employment summit. There is also a commitment from
the GLA to meeting with Colleges as part of the implementation planning phase in advance of
the first summit. Other important items of discussion included progress on the London
Apprenticeship Campaign, commitment to a wider employer campaign, exploration of
different ways of engaging with employers and the good practice and quality agenda and our
work with Ofsted.
On 8th May Professor Ann Hodgson and Professor Ken Spours shared with London Principals
and senior staff their research on young people’s participation, progression and transition to
higher study and work in London and the role of Colleges. This was the first of a proposed
series of joint Institute of Education/AoC London events so we will keep you posted.
For further information on the above please contact me, or Judith.
We look forward to the next series of AoC London networks over the next two weeks for
Marketing Managers, Business Development Managers, Clerks, Heads of Sport and Heads of
Students Services – all dates and times below. For further information on our networks please
contact Evelina.
Best wishes
Caroline Neville

The Skills Minister, Matthew Hancock MP, has asked Nigel Whitehead to lead a review of adult
vocational qualifications in England to identify which adult vocational qualifications (AVQs)
add value for employers and individuals. Therefore UKCES has prepared a survey and kindly
asked the Colleges to complete it online. The focus is on how adults (aged 19+) access and use
vocational qualifications.
If you have any further questions, please contact Tom Martin at UKCES.

Leyton Student Wins BCS Student of the Year
The London Region made its mark on the BCS world once more as Maahir Subhani from
Leyton College beat all other regional winners to become ‘Male Student Volunteer of the Year’
at the College Sport Week Gala Dinner. Maahir’s dedication to not only his college teams, but
also to the wider community were praised by his college in their nomination form, and he
thoroughly impressed the BCS National Team with his dedication and willingness to get stuck
in at the National Championships in March this year. This has been a fantastic accomplishment
at the start of the London Region’s journey within BCS, and I know we are just as proud as
Leyton College at his achievements.
For more information please contact Carla Emmanuel, BCS Regional Coordinator (London).
