REFLECTIVE TEACHING

 DEFINITION
 process by which educators analyses their own instructional strategies to determine
their overall efficacy
 based on critical reflection, improvement or modification
 On the basis of self-evaluation, observations, and feedback
 it enables teachers to examine and enhance their instructional strategies
 it not only benefits the students in several ways
 but also helps the teachers with enhanced teaching approaches
 Helps educators in analyzing their performance and enhancing it for the benefit of
students' futures
 enables educators to adjust to problems
 helps teachers to share their experiences
 inspires teachers to try new things
 It allows the teacher to be responsible towards his/her duty and take the student’s
future seriously
 It helps the teachers in understanding their performance and improving it for the
better future of the students
 It allows teachers to find innovative ways to make the class activities interesting and
fun for the students.
 Reflective teaching keeps track of what occurs in the classroom, why it occurs
 Focusing on self-improvement for better teaching practices as well as for
professional growth.
 Gaining useful ideas from thinking about and discussing how your lessons go is
common
 Focusing on self-improvement for better teaching practices
 based on the teacher’s self-observation and self-evaluation of their teaching methods
 Open-mindedness towards one’s teaching practices and willingness to improve for
the best
o Leads to professional development
o Improves student teacher relationship
o Promotes innovation
o Enhancing problem solving skills
 Not all educators have an understanding of how to follow the reflective
process.
 It may be an uncomfortable feeling to analyze and evaluate one’s practice.
 Reflective teaching is a time-consuming process.
 The teachers may not understand which aspects to reflect upon.
 A lot of thinking and reasoning is needed to follow reflective teaching
• There are three types of reflective teaching:
 Reflection-in-action
 Reflection-on-action
 Reflection-for-action
 Approaches of reflective teaching are:
 Self-reflection and self-assessment
 Request for student and peer feedback
 Recording class lessons of self for observation
 Use innovative teaching methods and techniques
 Come up with new teaching techniques and strategies
 Build a good relationship with the students
 Peer observation
 Recording your sessions
 Evaluating your new sessions
