3. Introduction
• VTEC(Variable valve timing & lift electronic
control) is a valve train system developed by
honda.
• Improve the volumetric efficiency of a four
stroke internal combustion engine.
• The Vtec system uses two camshaft profiles
and electronically selects between the
profiles.
• This was the first system of this kind.
4. Working
• VTEC is an electronic and mechanical system
in some Honda engines that allows the engine
to effectively have multiple camshafts. As the
engine moves into different rpm ranges, the
engine's computer can activate alternate
lobes on the camshaft and change the cam's
timing.
• At low RPM the exhaust and intake valve
would open and close by means of rocker
arms; the two smaller ones.
5. • At the high RPM by contrast a solenoid injects
more oil into the rocker arm which forces two
pins in the larger central rocker arm.
• When the larger central lobe is active that
time the two smaller lobes do not control the
valve control and the opening and closing of
intake and exhaust valve.
8. What is I-VTech
• The i stands for intelligent: i-VTEC is intelligent-VTEC.
• Honda introduced many new innovations in i-VTEC, but
the most significant one is the addition of a variable
valve opening overlap mechanism to the VTEC system.
Named VTC for Variable Timing Control
• It allows the valve opening overlap between the intake
and exhaust valves to be continuously varied during
engine operation.
• This allows for a further refinement to the power
delivery characteristics of VTEC, permitting fine-tuning
of power delivery of the engine.
