VOLUMETRIC FLOW
• Culvert capacity is measured by flow rate, Q
• Flow rate is a function of:
• Cross section area, A
• Water velocity, V
LET IT FLOW - CULVERT DESIGN 101
𝑄 ( 𝑚3
𝑠) = 𝐴𝑉
A (m2)
V (m/s)
• Volumetric flow:

OPEN-CHANNEL FLOW
• Velocity of water in a culvert is a function of:
• Pipe slope, S
• Cross section area, A
• Wetted perimeter, WP
• Pipe roughness, n

CONVEYANCE
• Culvert capacity can be compared using one term,
conveyance, K:

INLET CONTROL
• Shallow, high velocity flow
• Water can flow through and out faster than it can enter
• Discharge not influenced by roughness and length
LET IT FLOW - CULVERT DESIGN 101
• Factors that affect
discharge, Q:
1. End area
2. Inlet geometry
3. Headwater
elevation
19

INLET CONFIGURATION
• Inlet geometry affects entrance loss:

OUTLET CONTROL
LET IT FLOW - CULVERT DESIGN 101
• Deep, low velocity flow
• Water can flow into the culvert faster than it flow through
and out
• Discharge influenced by energy loss
• Factors that affect
discharge, Q:
1. Tailwater elevation
2. Inlet geometry
3. Slope
4. Roughness
5. Length

SPECIAL HYDRAULIC CONSIDERATIONS
LET IT FLOW - CULVERT DESIGN 101
• Uplift forces at the inlet end can cause buoyancy type
failure during high flows
• Can be avoided by anchoring the inlet
• Piping caused by seepage along the barrel wall can
cause culvert and/or embankment failure
• Can be prevented by protecting ends with end
treatment or clay seals
• Can also be
prevented by
using anti-
seepage collars
FRP anti-
seepage collar.
22
© 2015 Armtec LP • Confidential & Proprietary
END TREATMENT
• One of the major causes of culvert failure is scouring or
piping at the inlet/outlet
• Proper end treatment protects the pipe and embankment
• End treatment can also improve hydraulics of inlet/outlet
• Can be in the form of armouring and/or funnelling
Various failed or failing culverts.

CULVERT ALIGNMENT
1. Minimize impact to
natural alignment
2. Provide stream with
direct entrance and exit
3. Avoid course change
near exit
LET IT FLOW - CULVERT DESIGN 101
28
© 2015 Armtec LP • Confidential & Proprietary
CULVERT ALIGNMENT
• Culverts buried below natural streambed can lose
anticipated waterway depth
LET IT FLOW - CULVERT DESIGN 101
• Ideal grade should:
• Minimize length
• Account for settlement
• Account for sediment
• Ideal grade should not:
• Produce sediment
• Induce excessive
velocity
• Cause scour
29
© 2015 Armtec LP • Confidential & Proprietary
CULVERT ALIGNMENT
• Skewed culverts require balanced fill
• Warped embankment or full head walls may be required
LET IT FLOW - CULVERT DESIGN 101

FISH-BEARING STREAMS
• Fish-bearing streams may require a natural stream bed
• Can be achieved with embedded culverts or open-
bottom arches
• Some regulations require minimum embedment
• Sensitive streams may require undisturbed stream bed

COATINGS – pH AND RESISTIVITY
LET IT FLOW - CULVERT DESIGN 101
• pH and Resistivity (Ohm-cm) can be used to determine the
life of a steel culvert

GOOD CULVERT DESIGN
1. Properly takes care of water, bed-load, and floating debris
2. Accommodates increased runoff from anticipated
development
3. Inlet and outlet resists undermining and washout
4. Avoids detrimental change in flow pattern above and
below structure
5. Non-erosive flow within right-of-way and below the culvert
6. Will function properly after fill has caused settlement
7. Anticipates future sediment
8. Minimum cover and balance of fill
9. Material/coating meets design service life

STRUCTURAL PLATE - BENEFITS
• Segmental plate structures economically shipped to remote or
international locations via containers.
• Ease of installation w/o large cranes. They are readily available &
can be field assembled with unskilled labour.
• Less design & construction time is required, allowing earlier project
completion.
LET IT FLOW - CULVERT DESIGN 101
• Wide range of loading conditions
a) Deep bury.
b) Heavy live loads (haul trucks,
track vehicles).
c) Typically have reserve
capacity for overload
conditions.
d) Seismic forces.
47
© 2015 Armtec LP • Confidential & Proprietary
STRUCTURAL PLATE - BENEFITS
• Eliminates bridge decks & icy deck problems.
• No bridge deck deterioration problems.
• Eliminates constant maintenance of bridge approaches and painting
of superstructure.
• Permits the use of a constant roadway section in the vicinity of the
structure.
LET IT FLOW - CULVERT DESIGN 101
• The roadway is easily widened by
simply extending the ends.
• Environmentally preferred since
they permit the natural appearance
of earth slope & vegetation to be
utilized.
• Economical
