23. Why IT Business Management is Critical to Cloud
Today’s IT lacks business context
• How do I show my value to the business?
• How much does IT cost?
CIOs need better cost, vendor and
service level management
• Accurate information required to make
fact-based decisions
• Cloud sourcing means IT is evolving to be
a Service Broker
Existing approaches do not solve
the problem
• Highly manual, complex, fragmented
processes
• Error prone with no audit trail
23
24. VMware IT Business Management Suite
What is it?
• Integrated modules for IT financial, service
level and vendor management
• CIO dashboard shows information broken
down to business unit, geo and service
• Built on capabilities acquired from Digital
Fuel, industry pioneer and leader in ITFM
Why is it unique?
• SaaS-based solution purpose-built for hybrid
cloud environments

Become the Broker of IT Every phase of technology disruption has introduced fundamentally new paradigms for managementCloud will expand the management market opportunity for VMware and our ecosystem Each new management paradigm solves challenges related to the preceding eraTransition: Dynamic virtualized and cloud environments present new management challenges and opportunities that require new levels of automation and control
VMware simplifies management of virtual and hybrid cloud environments, improves IT effectiveness and efficiency, and provides the visibility and control necessary to run IT like a business
Each of these areas or vectors will need to be managed effectively in the highly dynamic environment of virtualization and cloud. This will require high levels of automation, much of which must be built into the systems and platforms at each layer. This slide highlights the key principles behind VMware’s approach to managing infrastructure, applications and end user computing in the context of IT as a Service.VMware Infrastructure and Operations Management solutions enable IT to create a zero-touch, compliant infrastructure that’s the right foundation for private cloud. Native management is designed-in to the virtualized and public, private, and hybrid cloud infrastructure to help deliver self-service through policy-driven control.VMware Application Management solutions enable IT to build modern apps through our open, standards-based Platform as a Service. They also help to quickly, accurately, and confidently transition existing applications to virtualized and cloud infrastructures, map application and infrastructure dependencies, and assure application portability and performance. VMware End-User Computing Management allows IT teams to ensure the quality of the end user experience, provision and deploy desktops rapidly, manage workstation images simply, and optimize costs through dynamic resource right-sizing.In each of these vectors, VMware can help you with your specific IT initiatives. For example, at the infrastructure layer we can assist with the building out of your private cloud, automating your operational environment and ensuring security and compliance. We will walk through these specific initiatives in more detail later in the presentation. While these capabilities can help with your management challenges at each layer, there is an even bigger challenge that VMware can help you address.

What makes the job of ops mgmt difficult?1. Scale of number of items under mgmt (VMs), huge increase in monitoring data what does it mean, what should I do about it?2. Rate of change (self-service portals, vmotion/drs, etc) how do I get better visibility into what is happening?3. Embedded mgmt capabilities of the platform when do I need to intervene? What should I optimize for?
In virtual and cloud environments the relationship between performance, capacity, and configuration become intricately linked. Configurations are fluid, capacity is shared and sourced from many places (multiple providers, infrastructure tiers, etc.), and all of these moving parts can impact performance. This means customers need intelligence – in the form of visibility across the system, and analytics to cull what is important from the torrent of data it produces – for a more integrated, automated approach to these three management disciplinesPatented performance analyticsSelf-learning of “normal” performance conditionsService health baseline and trending Smart alerts of impending performance degradationAutomated capacity planning and analysisIntegrated capacity analysis and forecastingDecision support & automation via views, alerts, reportsVM right sizing and capacity reclamationContinuous configuration and complianceAutomated patching and provisioningComprehensive change tracking to isolate root cause
Dean: Steve, I’m glad you asked. We are working on just that problem and we think security and compliance automation is a great example of Cloud Infrastructure Suite in action. I’m going to show you how we help customers automatically create a trust zone around sensitive workloads and ensure it is compliant, and I will do this by automating a workflow across several VMware Cloud Infrastructure Suite products using their extensible APIs. For the purpose of this demo we’ll use the PCI Cardholder Data Environment as an example but we can do this with other types of business critical apps or regulated data. In the demo we’ll show how: [In PPT need to emphasize the individual boxes] vShield Data Security will automatically detect regulated PCI cardholderdata in VMsvCenter Insight Navigator will automatically discover the entire PCI-CDE based on Application connectivity requirementsWe will use vShield App to create a Security Group and lock down the VMs in the PCI-CDE vCenter Configuration Manager will Assess and remediate configuration of VMs in thisShield App security groupAnd vShield Endpoint will provide efficient malware protection for those VMs without requiring any AV agents running on those machinesAnd what’s best about it is this whole process can be repeated daily or weekly, ensuring this PCI trust zone is not just automatically created but also self-healing!
The shear volume of Event, Performance, Availability metrics that need to be captured and analyzed is incredible. Every Host, every VM, every user, every admin action is generating data that can be analyzed…but existing management tools just aren’t designed to take advantage and drive insight from this data. They just weren’t designed with Cloud, or even simply virtualization in mind. We see a need for tools using increasingly sophisticated statistical models to separate between noise and the critical insights necessary to meet your SLAs.
The separation of Application and Infrastructure (Cloud provider / cloud consumer model)By moving to an horizontal approach, customers will able to gain a lot more control on the Application and adapt it to the business needs (Scale & Remediation)The motivation of the separation and focus on the Application layer as a complete operational stack it to allow the Application owners and developers achieve better agility, more flexibility, control and performance and ultimately migrate maintanance cost to innovationI believe that with the progress in infrastructure technologies – Virtual machines, Resource pools, clouds… there is a unique opportunity to simplify the way production Applications are measured and managed today.By tying in Pieces of Application data and applying them with some logic, we can take advantage of the strongest platform since mainframe to optimize Applications in production. Separation of infra and apps – opportunity for app teams to manage apps in production; hence, take a horizontal rather than vertical approach to managing apps Horizontal – the process of takiing apps from developing, to packaging, to deployment to monitoring to continuous improvement Two core elements; deployment – how to decide what elements are the building blocks; assign the resources, configurations and elements and define the relationships among all those; then take that mult-tier app on a deployment environment or a cloud in a matter than will allow you to mobilize the app (move from one cloud to another) Second; monitoring aspect – worrying about CPU, memory and disk space is ok, but need to focus on the service aspects of the app including user experience, business transactiosn, application costing and complianceAnd when you connect the two elements together, the outcome will lead to a closed loop system; in other words, when you deploy an app the moniotring system is aware of the app structure, the resources, and the location; and when change is pushed into that app the monitoring system can correlate the impact of the change to the service level and then take actions to optimize the service level (scaling, bursting, rolling back the change)

So you have all these spreadsheets... Then all the relationships …… which then create more spreadsheets ….. And feeds one master spreadsheet, which grows….. And then crumbles as soon as you analyse
