The One Health concept recognizes that the health
of people is connected to the health of animals
and the environment.

3. New Phrase
One Health is a new phrase, but the concept
extends back to ancient times (400 - 300 BC).
The recognition that environmental factors can
impact human health can be traced as far back as to
the Hippocrates in his text "On Airs, Waters, and
Places".

5. What is 'One Health'?
'One Health' is an approach to designing and
implementing programmes, policies, legislation and
research in which multiple sectors communicate and work
together to achieve better public health outcomes.
The areas of work in which a One Health approach is
particularly relevant include :
Ø Food safety
Ø Control of zoonoses
Ø Combatting antibiotic resistance

7. Why do we need?
ØTo effectively prevent the spread of disease from animals to
humans by vaccinating them
eg : Rabies
ØTo collect the information of infective diseases to prevent the
pandemics.
eg : Influenza viruses
ØTo prevent transfer of drug-resistant microbes that can be
transmitted by direct contact or through contaminated food
between animals and humans

8. For effective approach the epidemiological data and
laboratory information should be shared across the sectors
International bodies like WHO is working closely with FAO and
OIE
ØFor promoting food safety hazards
ØSpreading awareness about zoonoses and other public health
threats
ØProviding guidance to people on how to reduce risks
