  8. 8. How do we make time management effective? • Identify your priorities – your goals for the day and the semester • Make the schedule visible and easy to access • Create an Action Plan • Get Organized • Breathe!
  9. 9. Identifying Priorities What goes into your schedule • Some key things to include: • Classes • Study time • Meals • Work • Sleep • Breaks
  10. 10. Building Your Schedule • Start with things that have set times that you can’t change • Classes and work are examples • Add in study times • Try to keep these between 1 – 1.5 hours • Don’t forget meals, breaks, and other activities!

Schedule Building & Online Classes Making structure for yourself • Online courses can provide a lot of scheduling freedom • It’s important to give yourself from structure • Building your own structure can help with motivation and keep you on top of the work • Remember to be specific! • Say exactly what you plan on doing during the time you block out

  29. 29. DOES STRESS KEEP YOU FROM STARTING BIG PROJECTS? TRY AN ACTION PLAN! DO YOU STUDY BETTER AT A SPECIFIC TIME OF DAY? INCLUDE THAT INTO YOUR SCHEDULE! DO YOU STUDY BETTER WITH PEERS? TRY SI PASS, STUDY GROUPS, OR TUTORING! HEAD OFF PROCRASTINATION BEFORE IT STARTS

Action Plan • An action plan is a way of taking a large task and breaking it up into smaller, more manageable pieces • You can action plan big projects, homework assignments, study sessions, or anything else! • When making your action plan, it is important to include intermediate deadlines • These deadlines can help prevent procrastination

Action Plan Your Study Plan • Develop a study plan for you a class you have right now • Study Chapter 6 of Biology: Deadline – Feb 26 • Skim the chapter in the textbook – 2/17 • Attend Zoom Lectures – 2/20, 2/22, 2/24 • Take detailed notes • Write down all important terms/concepts on one page – 2/21 • Try out practice problems – 2/23 • Write 2-3 sentence summaries for each section of notes – 2/24

Action Plan Your Day • You can think of this like a structured to-do list! • Plan for 2/24 • Check email and respond – 8 to 9 AM • Attend Zoom Lecture for ECON – 9:30 AM • Summarize notes after lecture – 10:30 – 11 AM • Break • Take notes on slides and recorded lecture for FLEN – 1 PM • Break • Homework – 3 to 5 PM

The Pomodoro Technique Time management for the small scale • Organize how you work • Understand the task – break it into chunks (pomodoros) • For each 25 minutes of intense focus, give yourself a 5 minute break • 25 minute session = 1 Pomodoro • 1 Pomodoro = 5 minute break • 4 Pomodoros (100 minutes) = 30 minute break

Finding a Place to Work How to set up your space • Having a dedicated space for working on schoolwork can help add consistency to your day-to-day, online schedule • Try to avoid working in your bed when possible • If you have to; try working at the end of your bed you don’t normally sleep on • Keep things like notebooks, writing utensils, headphones, and charging cords nearby
  37. 37. Things To Keep In Mind Why your time management needs to be flexible • Priorities change • Life happens • A good plan can be improved • Things don’t always go according to plan • You might have extra time • You might have less time • Other people might need your help
