A Shanghai Story
CIT Crawford College of Art & Design (CCAD) signed an MOU with Shanghai University (College of Fine Art) in March 2012. The connection between the two colleges had been established initially through a visit by CCAD lecturer Christine Pybus in 2009, followed up by CCAD’s lecturer in glass, Debbie Dawson, who visited Shanghai University glass department in 2010 and who initiated a student and staff exchange with Prof. Xiao Wei Zhuang, Director of the MA in Glass programme at the University. Prof Zhuang was also the inaugural Director of the Shanghai Museum of Glass (http://www.shmog.org/).
Initially, Prof. Zhuang visited Ireland in 2011 and CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery hosted an exhibition of his work as part of the Irish Year of Design 2011, “Poetics of the Handmade”; this was very well received, and two pieces were donated to CIT and to Cork City Council.
In 2012, with the help of a Cork City Council Twinning grant, two students from CCAD travelled to Shanghai University to study at the Glass Department for a two month period, and in turn CCAD hosted two Chinese students, who were based mainly in ceramics and textiles while in Ireland for a similar period of time. Since 2012, four students – two from Cork and two from Shanghai - have benefitted each year from the exchange programme, enabled by the funding provided from Cork City Council Twinning programme and from CCAD.
