Topic- Magnet, it’s discovery and magnetic poles
By- Asish Khatua
Integrated B.Sc. B.Ed. (Medical)

Let’s Recall-
• Mirror
• Types
• Reflection
Magnet-
• The object which attract iron is called magnet.
• Substance which is being attracted by magnet is called magnetic
substance.
E.g.- Iron, nickel , cobalt
• Substance which is not attracted towards magnet is called non-
magnetic substance.
E.g.- paper, plastic, cotton, wool, polythene, gold, silver etc.
Tell some uses of magnets you have seen in
daily life.
Activity
Iron, plastic, paper, cobalt, polythene, nickel, wood, humans, plants
Separate magnetic and non-magnetic objects.
Magnet Objects- Non-magnet Objects-
True/False
Substance which is being attracted by magnet is called non-magnetic
substance.
Let’s Watch this interesting video…
https://youtu.be/CqlFvFNe1Nk
Discovery of magnet
• First natural magnet was discovered by shepherd called Magnes when his iron
stick and nails in his sandal accidentally attracted by a rock.
• Place- Magnesia of ancient Greece.
• Later that rock was named magnetite by his name.
Which objects are present inside the soil?
POLL
1) Which of the following is true for magnet?
a) Place of discovery was ancient Greece.
b) It was discovered by shepherd named Magnes.
c) Magnet is present in Rock named magnetite.
d) All of these
2) Fill in the blanks
was attracted by rock.(Iron stick/wooden stick)

Poles of Magnet
• The part of magnet where it’s intensity is more called pole.
• Magnet always faces in north-south direction.
Properties of magnet-
• Same pole repel each other.
• Unlike pole attract each other.
What will happen to poles of a magnet if we break
it into two pieces?
What will happen in A) and B) ? In which case it will attract and repel?
A)
B)
Recap-
• Today we have discussed about magnet, it’s discovery and some
properties of poles of magnet.
1) Define magnet found in nature.
2) Differentiate magnetic and non-magnetic objects with examples.
3) Describe the properties of magnetic poles.
4) Name the place of discovery of magnet.
5) Who discovered magnet?
Homework-
1) Define magnet.
2) Differentiate magnetic and non-magnetic Substance.
3) Tell properties of magnetic pole.
Activity-
1) Try to explore magnetic compass and see how it’s showing
direction.
2) List some objects in which magnets are used.
THANK YOU
