This document provides summaries of and links to various educational software tools and websites that were presented at a workshop, along with the attendee's opinions and reflections on each. The attendee found several tools like Wordle, Tagxedo and Voki useful for classroom activities to engage students. However, concerns were raised about tools like Sketch Swap being potentially addictive or about content on Quia being deleted after a trial period. Overall, exposure to new educational technologies was seen as valuable for teaching practices.

others on the internet. This visual online
identity puts a friendly face on your
internet presence and best of all, you can
quickly update it depending on your
mood. You are not limited to the internet
either and can download your avatar to
use in documents, greetings cards,
letters...the list is endless.
Inspiration(Mapping)
On the same day, we also createdmind
maps using Inspiration. This is a great way
of incorporating ICT in class, and I
recognise that we should be using
technology and encouraging students to use
it. However, I found it confusing to use. I
think I am more comfortable with my own
strategy of arranging ideas on a piece of
paper. However, I will encourage students
to use it, as it will most likely be very useful
for some of them, and as new technology,
they should have exposure to it in order to be competitive. Overall, this workshop was a great learning
experience for me. Some of the programs and sites were very useful sites, and although I had concerns about
several of them, I would still love to incorporate these in my classroom in order to make lessons more
meaningful and to engage students in active learning.

In Microsoft Office 2007, while most of Microsoft Office apps adopted ribbons in their user
interface, Publisher retained its toolbars and did not adopt ribbons until the next version, 2010.

Scootle is a national digital learning
repository which provides Australian
teachers with access to more than 20,000
digital learning items, provided by a wide

• open-ended tools for teachers and

Scootle has made finding and using digital resources aligned to the Australian Curriculum easy for
teachers.
Teachers can use Scootle to create personalised 'learning paths' consisting of digital curriculum resources
organised into a learning sequence targeted to individual students, student groups or for particular
learning purposes.
Students can access a learning path anywhere and at any time, using a unique PIN, without the need for
logins. A learning path can also be exported in a number of formats for external use by students as a
worksheet, checklist of activities completed or as an assessment task.

Twins, and after using it, I realized that it is
a good starting point and can play a role in
improving students’ levels of engagement.
They can create a movie from a storyboard,
and it is an interesting way of maximizing
learning.

brainstorming, and improving language skills.
Overall, I found the workshop for day one to
be both useful and enjoyable. I had the
chance to learn about a variety of programs and increased my knowledge. It also was useful
because I learned about innovative technology that will assist me in my future work.
The images you create with Wordle are yours to use in any way you choose. You may print T-Shirts,
business cards, brochures, what have you.

CREATE AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL COMIX
At the beginning of each new school year have
students create an autobiographical comic strip
talking about themselves and their families or
summarizing the most important things about
their lives. Let each student select a cartoon
character as a surrogate to represent her or him.
After students complete their strips, encourage
them to exchange their comics with classmates
to learn more about each other. Students can

about them. These autobiographical comic strips can become the opening pages of a daily comix

 Have students create a comic strip story using new vocabulary words that are being taught.
 Having students fill in talk or thought balloons for different cartoon characters helps students
practice conversation and offers a way to practice language structure and vocabulary in a

 Have students who are learning new foreign languages write their text in languages they
are studying. In addition to English, the site accepts characters and accent marks from
languages such as Spanish, Latin, German, Italian and Portuguese. Additional languages

also able to print out their work.
Thus, I can see how it could be
used to build creative writing skills.

aimed especially towards kids

metropolitan areas. It is focused
towards showing this audience
as well as children in city areas
how to make their own content.

creations that is both free and
accessible to school and home
computers.
All content that appears on the
site has been watched and
approved by an ABC moderator
before it appears on the site.
While predominantly for kids, the site can also be used in schools to promote digital literacy,
media production and safe interaction in a context of exploring creativity and having fun.
The site areas include:
Inspire - A video gallery of clips from professional animators, filmmakers and artists giving
“behind the scenes” tips and tricks to budding creators. This gallery includes work from
prominent international companies such as Aardman and Weta as well as profiling work
from local companies including Monkeystack and the Peoples Republic of Animation.
Plan – A section giving suggestions on how to generate ideas for stories, characters, and
worlds. This area also provides tools and templates to develop these ideas and concepts
towards realisation, such as storyboards and script templates.
Create – With rich animated content and downloadable FAQ sheets, this area shows kids
how to actually make stuff like animations, flipbooks and zines using what is available on
the web for free as well as using bits and pieces from around the house.

Sketch Swap is another program I saw, and I found that it has negative aspects as well as
positive ones. Although it was fun to use, one of its major drawbacks is that, in my opinion,
it can be addictive. I can use it for hours and end up wasting time. Furthermore, I do not
think that it offers enough educational value to use it with students, although it is a good tool
for encouraging students to sketch. In the long run, I don’t think it has major benefits. I also
feel that the potential for its misuse it high, and hence monitoring is very important.

Voki is an educational tool that allows users to create their very own talking character.
Voki Classroom is a student assignment management system for Voki. With Voki
Classroom, teachers are able to control their students’ privacy settings.

To design program and ask students to do do it later after school in the home .
is making a quiz on Hangman; this was really a fun process. I think it would be a great activity for
students because it enables them to think logically and critically. I learned that this is a very useful
site that can easily be used with students in the classroom. After this workshop, I think this is a
great way to assess whether or note students have understood the concepts taught. However, I
had some concerns because Greg mentioned that we can use the trial version for 30 days, but
after that all work will be deleted unless a subscription fee of US $40 is paid every month. Another
major concern is that it does not allow you to print or download anything, so the work done by
students cannot be assessed without access to the Internet. I think this will hinder feedback and
will make it difficult to help students solve challenges they are facing.
