Major economies in the Middle East are investing heavily in diversification as The Big 5 attracts
professionals from all sectors of the construction industry to Dubai for its biggest ever show
I
nvestment in the GCC
construction sector is set
to soar over the next three
years as member states focus
on economic diversification,
according to a new report. The
report by Alpen Capital says:
“Favourable macroeconomics,
positive demographics, and
rising tourism plus increasing
populations and a demand
for infrastructure have given
governments initiative to
start diversifying, and start
building...big.”
Massive investment in building
and infrastructure across the
GCC guarantees growth despite
falling oil prices, according to
a Ventures Onsite report GCC
Construction Industry Trends &
Challenges 2015.
It was commissioned for The
Big 5 and says the UAE, Saudi
Arabia and Qatar are the region’s
leaders but the UAE offers top
investment opportunities thanks
to sophisticated infrastructure
and regulated real estate markets.

But the report
highlights Saudi Arabia’s
construction sector as
it registered the highest
non-oil GDP growth rate
at 6.7 per cent in 2014.
The kingdom’s 2015
reflects its diversification
plan with major spending
on construction in key
government segments.
GCC population is set
to grow from 35 million to
60.2m by 2050, increasing
the need for more housing,
especially affordable
housing, reflected in one
of the strongest trends of
2015 so far.
Population growth has
seen strong investment in
infrastructure, education
and healthcare, according
to the report.
The Big 5 2015 is the
largest meeting place for
construction professionals
in the Middle East. For
more than 35 years, it has
earned its place, reflecting
the changing demands of
the region and bringing
the finest building and
construction products from
around the world.
“There is no bigger event
than The Big 5 Dubai and
this year there has been
huge support for the new
event,” said Event Director
Josine Heijmans.
Last year saw more
than 2,800 exhibitors from
more than 60 countries at
The World Trade Centre
which attracted 81,000
participants making it a
record breaking year with a
a sell-out show.
The GCC construction
sector is set to register
strong performance as
billions of dollars are being
invested on building and
infrastructure projects
and mega events such as
Dubai Expo 2020, Qatar
2019 Athletics World
Championship and Qatar
FIFA World Cup 2022.
And with contract awards
in all GCC countries likely
to remain strong, growth
and expansion remains
positive over the next five
years and beyond. g

4. 04 THE BIG 5 SHOW PREVIEW. NOVEMBER 23 -26 2015. DUBAI WORLD TRADE CENTRE
INTERVIEW: JOSINE HEIJMANS
By Gary Wright
Josine Heijmans
F
or the construction
industry in the Middle
East there is no bigger
event than The Big 5 and I’m
excited to be part of it,” says
Josine Heijmans, the new event
director for The Big 5 Dubai.
Heijmans took the helm
of the show earlier this year
and promises exhibitors and
visitors that this year will be
something special, building on
last year’s incredible success.
In 2014, 80,178 participants
gathered at the World Trade
Centre during the four days,
which was an increase of 9 per
cent on the previous year – and
this year is set to be bigger,
says Heijmans.
“The response in terms of
business and participants
has been excellent with huge
support for new features at
The Big 5.”
This is a big event and the
new event director, who brings
a wealth of experience in
the event industry to the role,
reveals a genuine enthusiasm
for the construction sector.
“The Big 5 is the main event
of the year for all construction
professionals. Nowhere else
offers the opportunity to meet
and network with so many
people as well as the chance
to view literally thousands of
products across all sectors.
“We have a great team and a
track record of success from
which we can continue to grow
for the benefit of the sector.”
Heijmans believes however
that no show can stand still
and this year there are an
estimated 36,000 products and
the exhibitors are expected to
top 3,000.
But she says that The Big
5 is more than that: “The
whole team is focused on a
great visitor experience with an
expected 63 countries exhibiting.
“Planning is the key to get
the most out of your event
visit,” says the event director.
“Firstly, download The Big 5
app on your smartphone. It’s
easy and makes your visit
to the World Trade Centre
more efficient.
“Next, get a feel for the
layout of the show: see where
the sections that interest
you are located, check the
individual companies, network
with industry peers and look
through the programme of
workshops and talks. Decide
what interests you and start
planning your event visit well
in advance. Also make sure to
benefit from the print at home
badge after pre-registering
your visit to the show to avoid
the queues onsite.
“The Big 5 covers the whole
exhibition centre, it may need
a couple of days to ensure
you get to see everything that
interests you. Remember this
is the sole event of its type that
offers so much in one place
and everyone I’ve spoken to
The Big 5 event director Josine Heijmans looks forward to this
year’s event and offers advice on getting the very best from your
visit to the Middle East’s biggest construction and build show.
who visited last year agreed
pre-planning was the answer.
Decide how many hours you
feel you’ll need there – then
double it. There’s so much
to see.”
She said: “The enhanced
educational programme has
grown to more than 75 CPD
workshops this year.”
Also, this year there is
extra attention for the role of
distributors at the show.
“One of the difficulties for
distributors was to meet with
new manufacturers, they
come to the show where they
are promoting their existing
products and may not get the
opportunity to take on new
lines,” says Heijmans.
“This year we have addressed
that directly and on the
third day of the show we
have an event specifically
for key distributors to meet
international manufacturers
with products new to the region.”
The Big 5 is the largest
construction event in the region
and for thousands of people it
is the chance to meet, exchange
ideas and do business.
“But it is also about
entertainment and this year’s

immerse yourself in the region’s biggest construction show.
“ The response in terms of business

live demonstrations promise
to be a key attraction,” says
Heijmans.
“We want there to be a fun
element too and if that includes
an element of education, that’s
even better.”
Last year’s show was a
sell out, with no exhibition
space unfilled. This year the
addition of The Big 5 Focus
has increased the capacity of
the event.
Heijmans said: “The
Big 5 Focus is almost a
show within a show with
even more international
exhibitors, free CPD certified
educational sessions on project
management and construction
technology, as well as prize
giveaways and the CPD
certificate collection point.
Focus will be a must-visit
section at the show.”
It is also in the Big 5 Focus
Hall – in the Technology in
Construction Theatre - that
the prize winner of the Gaia
awards will be announced on
the second show day, with
the chance to win $50,000 on
marketing exposure for the
winning sustainable product. g

SPEAKER INTERVIEW
Ultimately, it will be the people and
their quality of green lifestyle that
will be the real measurement to the
success of sustainable cities.
Why residents are just as
important as design in
the cities of the future
We talk with Baharash Bagherian, founder and
designer of Baharash Architecture, an award-winning
studio in London, which is the lead designer for phase
2 of Dubai’s first sustainable city.
I
work with fully trained
and professional teams,
all committed to design
excellence and the delivery of
high-quality architecture.
Prior to establishing
Baharash Architecture, I worked
in senior positions for some
of the world’s most renowned
architects working on high-
profile international projects.
“I believe great architecture
is more than buildings, it’s
about creating sustainable
destinations that make people
feel healthy to live in, inspired
to work in and want to visit.
“Although there are various
aspects that influence the
quality of life - such as
crime rates, health statistics,
unemployment, income
growth, cost of living etc - the
built environment, and the
way a city is designed, has a
great influence on the quality
of life, as well as helping to
minimise people’s impact on
the environment.
“A sustainable city is one
that provides the highest
quality of life together with
the lowest environmental
footprint, whilst ensuring the
needs of future generations
are not compromised.
“At a neighbourhood
scale, Hammarby Sjostad in
Stockholm has been widely
studied as a good example of
sustainable development.
“At the very early stages
of the project, a ‘closed loop’
infrastructure strategy was
drawn up for the project,
including new public transport
routes, district heating and
cooling and an underground
waste collection system for the
development as a whole.
Although the project adopted
various passive and active
strategies, I believe that the
best models of sustainable
cities should focus more
on passive solutions, since
these provide the biggest
environmental gains with the
least financial investment for
the project.
“One of the key successes
of this project was the
collaborative process between
municipal authorities,
urban planners, developers,
architects, landscape architects,
engineers, and energy &
water companies.
“This holistic approach to
master planning created a
special place for Stockholm, a
place that is vibrant, healthy
and sustainable.
“The other key success was
the participation and education
model created for the district’s
residents. It is believed that
water consumption and
pollutants can be reduced
by 50 per cent by increasing
environmental awareness.”
For the future he says: “First,
let’s look at the big picture.
Over the next decade, there
will be a significant increase
in population and urbanisation,
which will have severe impacts
on our cities’ infrastructures
and resources, as well as the
health and wellbeing of its
inhabitants.
To mitigate these effects
and provide a higher quality of
life, we need to look at holistic
solutions at various scales.
“Fostering a bottom-up
entrepreneurial spirit in
sustainable development is
a passive way to achieve
this. This inward investment
in people, businesses and
organisations that are
passionate about improving
their own city is in my opinion
the most passive way of
creating more green jobs and
will most likely result in a
new way of thinking about
sustainable cities.
“Ecotourism will also be
another area for development.
The UAE is expected
to welcome 30 million
international tourists a year
by 2021. The country has
some of the most beautiful
natural landscapes in the
region, a perfect destination
for eco resorts. There are
also great economic, socio-
cultural and environmental
benefits for developing eco
resorts. Eco resorts help create
job opportunities for locals,
creating a more diversified
economy. They also help
preserve the region’s heritage
and provide greater interaction
with native people.
“Another area of development
will be inclusivity. There
is a significant demand for
affordable housing. Any
development, which claims
to be sustainable but does not
integrate affordable housing into
the heart of neighbourhoods
is, in my opinion, a failed
concept of a sustainable city.”
The best models of sustainable
cities wwill provide housing
for all types of people, without
segregation or excuse about land
prices.
“An inclusive city also values
the needs of all people equally,
including the workers who are
contributing to their legacy.
“Today, there are many
countries that do not see
the long term social and
economic benefits migrant
workers bring to their cities,
thus they fail at meeting
the very basic needs to their
livelihoods such as health
and safety.” g

Time: 10-11am (both days)
Where: Business Intelligence Theatre
Who should attend?
People who are starting out on their management career, those looking for
a step up and those looking to polish and update their existing management
skills. It is also a great opportunity for people to learn from each other and to
network with like-minded professionals.
“Great leaders know their strengths
and weaknesses, what makes
them productive, how they best
communicate... and they know the
areas where they don’t perform well.”
Great leadership comes from
understanding yourself
We talk with Liz Kentish, managing director of Kentish & Co, and former
deputy chairman of the British Institute of Facilities Management as she
prepared for her seminars on improving your leadership skills.
W
e have worked
with a number
of construction
and facilities management
companies and teams around
the world helping them to
develop leadership skills,
improving their relationships
and boosting the performance
of their people,” says Liz
Kentish.
Liz is a qualified coach,
licensed trainer, international
conference chairman and
public speaker who has
specialised in the service
sector for more than 20 years.
She is recognised
internationally for her ability
to make a difference to the
lives of her clients and trusted
friends. Her energetic and
inspiring nature is infectious,
helping to boost business
performance and achieve
results quickly.
She is a consummate
networker and highly
regarded within both the
facilities management and
coaching industries in the
UK and Middle East – you’ve
probably already seen her on a
conference platform or met her
at a networking event.
Her track record includes
some of the biggest names
in construction and she
has helped restructure
management approach.
Liz said: “One is John Laing
Integrated Services where
we ran the UK’s Institute of
Leadership and Management
levels 3 and 5 supporting
people taking their first
steps into management and
honing the skills of those with
considerable management
experience under their belt.
“As a result the teams gained
a more rounded approach to
leadership, and individuals
took on far more personal
responsibility across the
contracts, so if they were an
operator, they would also look
at what else they could offer
the client, essentially taking on
a business development role.
“There was a significant rise
in internal promotions and
productivity and performance
increased markedly. As an
external training provider, we
bring experience from working
with lots of different people, in
lots of different environments
and industries. We have a
consummate understanding of
what works and what doesn’t
and some brilliant anecdotes
to share.
“But students don’t just
learn from us. One of the most
valuable aspects of attending
a training course is that the
students learn from each other,
share experiences and create,
what can be life-long, networks.
She has become closely
associated with The Big 5
and its associated shows,
like FM EXPO, and has a
strong understanding of the
construction sector in the
Middle East.
She said: “Property
investors in the Middle East
are recognising the importance
of a strong maintenance
programme if they are
to realise their return on
investment. This is great news
for the facilities management
and construction sector. The
construction and FM sector
in Europe is accustomed to
focusing on maintenance
and operation thanks to the
legacy stock of some very old,
challenging buildings which
often require considerable
retrofitting. The Middle East
is fortunate as in many ways
it is a blank canvas. The speed
of progress is astonishing as
the countries are learning
from the mistakes (and
best practice) of the more
established markets, and will
soon be overtaking them.”
Her two-part presentation
covers ‘Developing
leadership skills for the
construction section’.
But if she had one top tip for
managers, what would it be?
“Our two-part presentation
are interactive workshops
where we help people to
understand their strengths and
weaknesses when it comes to
leadership and management.
“My key piece of advice
is to ‘know thy self›. Great
leaders know their strengths
and weaknesses; they know
what makes them productive;
they know how they best
communicate; and how they
best learn; and they know
the areas where they don’t
perform well.
“And they hire people with
complementary skills to fill
those gaps. To be a good
manager and a leader, you
need to spend time focusing
on your own skills and
understanding yourself better.” g

Insulating an aluminium

Thermal Break.
The principle of thermal
break and thermal bridge is a
fundamental of heat transfer
where a penetration of the
insulation layer by a highly
conductive or non-insulating
material takes place in the
separation between the interior
and exterior environments of a
building assembly.

Bronx is now offering
Galfan as an option on new

existing lines.
Recognising both the
market trend towards
lower coating weights and
the advantages of Galfan
coatings, Bronx will be
discussing how to reduce
costs and coating weight,
without compromising
corrosion resistance.
Why Galfan?
Galfan is an established
coating, delivering excellent
corrosion resistance and
formability, as well as
greater painted product
performance than regular
galvanised coatings. The
unique microstructure
and physical properties of
Galfan also allows lower
coating weights to be
achieved than conventional
zinc coatings.
Galfan’s unique benefits
around ductility and
corrosion resistance are
related to its characteristic
microstructure, making it
suitable for a wide range
of applications including
building, construction,
appliance, roofing and
walling, harsh winter
environments and
deep drawing. Galfan
microstructure is particularly
suited to low coating weight
applications. g

SPEAKER INTERVIEW
Date: Part 1 November 23, Part 2 November 24
Time: 10-11am (both days)

Who should attend?
Manufacturers supplying to the construction, electrical/gas, fire and PPE sectors. This includes
QA managers but also marketing and sales professionals who wish to understand how BSI can
help with creating commercial advantage.
Construction organisations will be interested in our new Kitemark for BIM and the presentation
will include a case study to explain the relationship between standards and certification.
“Gaining a competitive edge is
critical to construction product
manufacturers as its becoming
increasingly important for companies
to not only meet their legal obligations
but also remain competitive in the
global market place.”
- Andy Butterfield
We talk with Andy Butterfield, the Global Head
of Construction for BSI, who will present for
two days in The Business Intelligence Theatre.
A
ndy Butterfield
oversees British
Standards Institution’s
(BSI’s) network of regional
offices in 74 countries around
the world. BSI’s Product
Certification construction
sector services includes;
Kitemark Certification, CE
marking, Keymark, Watermark
and Benchmark.
He has 30 years of
experience in quality
assurance, testing and
certification, and is a qualified
Mechanical Engineer and ISO
9001:2000 Lead Assessor.
He explained his two-part
seminar will cover testing and
certification for two distinct
areas; product manufacturing
for the construction sector
(products which are supplied
to the construction sector
such as windows, doors, pipes,
fittings, concrete, cement) and
will also be discussing a new
area which is a certification of
processes and organizations
for digital technology in
construction such as BIM
(Building Information
Modeling).
He said: “The presentation
will focus upon the need
for effective standards and
assurance solutions which
support implementation and
adoption of standards – I
will also focus upon global
market access.”
He says being aware of the
standards and understanding
the benefits is vital across the
construction sector and he offers
a look back to the beginning
of the last century for a simple
explanation of why:
“The need for standards has
been an issue for well over
100 years and is perfectly
illustrated through the
formation of BSI,” he said.
“In 1901 the transport
sector was struggling with
a big problem with the
differing sections of steel
being manufactured for tram
lines. There were no standards
in place at the time and the
result was that there were in
excess of 75 different sizes of
steel section, which made the
construction of projects almost
impossible, as you can imagine
the waste in terms of time,
labour and materials would
have been significant.”
The solution came in
the form of Sir John Wolfe
Barry developing the very
first British Standards for
steel sections for tram
lines, and so the British
Standards Institution was
born. The result was truly
transformational effectively
reducing the number of steel
section types from 75 to
just six. The six makes the
process of construction far
easier, cost effective and
efficient.
“People face the same
challenges in today’s world,
whilst the processes and
Why understanding construction
material standards is vital…and
profitable
materials may have changed,
the same need for standards
is as relevant today and it was
back in 1901,” said Butterfield.
He explained that the BSI
Kitemark evolved within
two years, which enabled
organisations to demonstrate
that they met both product and
process standards and enabled
them to demonstrate this to
industry stakeholders and
supply chain partners.
Kitemark schemes are
available for many different
type of standards ranging
from British (BS), European
(EN), International (ISO) and
American (ASTM) standards
to standards which have been
specifically created where
there is no existing standard in
the market, known as Publically
Available Standards (PAS). BSI
is therefore able to help local
markets, such as the GCC
region, by creating Kitemark
certification schemes which are
relevant to the local issues.
“We actively assist
manufacturers in the
region to demonstrate their
commitment to quality and best
practice in order to secure a
commercial advantage through
differentiating their products
and services,” said Butterfield.
“I will structure my
presentation to include an
overview of what the BSI
Group does and how we
are structured to help with
global market access. I will
include pictures and a couple
of case studies as examples
of where we have helped in
the ME region. I will also be
explaining how standards are
helping to shape solutions for
current issues related to the
construction sector.” g

SPEAKER INTERVIEW
Multi-cultural management made
simple and successful
Date: Wednesday November 25, 2015
Time: 2:30pm
Where: The Business Intelligence Theatre
Who should attend?
Mid and senior level managers and executives who are tasked with managing an intercultural team in
a regional or multi-national market environment.
“Differences in
managementvary
from the person
who leads a team
and also, often
subconsciously,
the cultural
background of a
leader.”
- Beatrice Hunt
We speak to Beatrice Hunt, GM of BE Consultants International as she prepares for
her seminar on managing staff from a variety of backgrounds.
T
he wide diversity of
the workforce requires
skill, tact, and discreet
flexing of communication
styles to not increase the
barriers and walls that already
exist and that actually impact
clear communication,” says
Beatrice Hunt.
Her career has seen
her involved with people
from differing cultures and
backgrounds through her
work with NGOs. She has
lived in Dubai, Saudi Arabia
and Kuwait during the past
14 years.
She said: “I perceived that
there are many challenges
an executive has to cope and
contend with.
“Differences in management
vary from the person who
leads a team and also, often
subconsciously, the cultural
background of a leader can
influence the way he leads
a team. In the Middle East
region each company and
office is literally a hybrid of
many different nationalities,
languages, and cultures.
“Having everyone work
together and in harmony-
building consensus and esprit
de corps requires mastery
of intercultural competence,
emotional intelligence, and
conflict management.”
The MENA region
presents its own set of unique
challenges, says Hunt: “The
wide diversity of the work
force requires skill, tact,
and discreet flexing of
communication styles to not
increase the barriers and
walls that already exist and
that actually impact clear
communication.”
And her seminar will focus
on ensuring the best possible
management of those staff
aided by a new tool, she says.
“Our sister company Institute
for Leadership Development in
Berlin’s has a new tool, which
is called ‘4Cs of Leadership’
– it’s a diagnostic tool for
leadership and management
developed by the respected
Eckert business school in
Florida, USA.”
Hunt believes there are huge
benefits: “How a culturally
diverse workforce is more
efficient, I will explain in my
workshop.
“Diversity also brings
different areas of thoughts,
ideas, experiences on how to
accomplish things. It is always
good to also receive real
feedback to ensure keeping
everything on track to reach
whatever goal is being sought.”
And finally, she believes
that the Gulf offers real
opportunity for the right
businesses.
She said: “The GCC market
and the construction industry
is currently undergoing change.
The global oil spot price
might not recover to higher
levels, and that means public
spending will slow. It will be a
growing private sector that will
eventually win the day.
“Having a strong foundation
on cultural awareness, good
interpersonal communication
skills, empathy, and strong
emotional intelligence
will allow you to cherish,
profit, and learn from your
experiences in the Gulf.” g
