5. How does it change our understanding
of and relationship with God to use
both masculine and feminine names /
images?
Why does it
matter what
names or
descriptions we
use for God?
6. Why, in 2014, is Expansive
Language Not Yet Completely
Standard?
8. Foundational Value #1:
Revelation of Scripture
• All scripture is inspired by
God and is useful for
teaching...
2 Timothy 3:16a
• Thus, we practice spiritual
disciplines of study, prayer,
conferencing, and
discernment
9. Foundational Value #2:
Purity
• Feminine images and pronouns
were once connected strongly
with pagan goddess imagery and
earth-as-goddess images
• Must take scripture seriously,
authoritatively
• Let them know that you alone,
whose name is the LORD, are the
Most High over all the earth.
Psalm 83:18
11. Foundational Value #4:
Expansive Gender Equality
• GOAL:
– To obey the command to love the Lord God with our
heart, soul, mind, and strength by seeking to know
God
– To love our neighbors as ourselves by acknowledging
that God created humanity in God’s image – male
AND female

HERE: ASK THIS QUSETION: WHY ARE THOSE IN THE ROOM PASSIOANTE ABOUT INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE
Some are clear, some are stained, some magnify, some distort, and others dusty in need of cleaning
For maximum benefit to individuals or community, they require interpretation.
It’s easy to take them for granted or think they have always existed as we see them now
We often forget to notice the windows/words in the places we are most familiar, and disrupting our routines to reexamine can be highly illuminating
They are [only] tools – a method of encountering God and preaching the gospel; not the end in themselves, but also never to neglected
Intent vs. Impact
Tolerance?
Normative – Marginal
Diversity
Lingering sexism in our culture and world continues to distort our understanding of power, authority and God’s sovereignty
But Jesus Christ already showed us an alternative model of power – that of a Lord who washes feet, who dies on a cross, whose love is what redeems.
Inclusive: ONLY neutral language, no traditional Trinitarian “father-son-spirit” . Misuse and resistance have bestowed the word inclusive with baggage:
Misunderstanding about purpose
Flawed or grammatically clumsy methods
“Political Correctness”
Feminine names and images for God, even those found in Christian scriptures, continue to be ignored and labeled heretical.
Bibl and glasses that belowed to John Wesley
How do we begin to understand the mystery and love of God? Scripture offers many metaphors for us to understand how God relates to us. These images teach us about God and ourselves, and by exploring this variety of images, we learn more about the nature of God.
What does God’s Wisdom look like? The book of Proverbs offers a fascinating way of understanding Wisdom as a “person” who takes action, and teaches us about how we can identify wisdom in our own lives.
What does it mean when we call God Father or Mother? There are many passages that help us understand God as Parent. Scripture also empowers us to explore in what ways this language can be limiting, and how we can expand our understanding of God.
The Bible is full of many different inanimate images of God! All these images teach us new ways of understanding God’s nature. In what ways does nature influence your own understanding of God?
Names are very significant in Scripture. What does it mean to you when God says “I am who I am”? Is it really possible to know the unknowable God?
We are going to share together in a time of prayer in which we listen, sing and
What surprised you
What challenged you
What comforted you
What does the exercise overall tell us about who God is
What does this tell us about who we (humanity) are
How are we transformed?
How shall we act now?
