8 Motivational TED Talks for College Students | Avery Eisenreich

  1. 1. 8 Motivational TED Talks for College Students The following are 8 motivational TED Talks all college and college-bound students should watch before classes resume in September. © Avery Eisenreich
  2. 2. 1. The Power of Introverts © Avery Eisenreich Susan Cain is an American writer and lecturer. In this inspiring TED Talk for post-secondary students, she argues that universities are designed to be social in nature. She also points out that introverts should not give in to the pressure to fit in and try to become an extrovert. By caving into peer pressure, Cain believes that others around introverted students miss out on the wonderful things that introverts have to offer. Susan Cain
  3. 3. 2. Try Something New for 30 Days © Avery Eisenreich Matt Cutts is an American software engineer, who headed the web spam team at Google between 2004 and 2014. In this powerful TED Talk, Cutts discusses his decision to follow the suggestion of Morgan Sporlock, an American Philosopher, and try something new every 30 days. Some of the 30 day challenges he endeavored in: walking at least 10,000 steps a day, biking to work, and not drinking coffee. Some of the main benefits of doing the 30 day challenges, he argues, are that time slows down and life becomes more motivating. Matt Cutts
  4. 4. 3. Dare to Disagree © Avery Eisenreich Margaret Heffernan is an entrepreneur, CEO, writer and keynote speaker. In this TED Talk, she discusses the benefits of conflict for businesses - the collaborative kind. For her, conflict is a form of thinking as well as a driver of change. Unfortunately it is notably absent from the business world because executives are afraid of embracing it. If we are to get the most out of our people we must allow them to develop the skills they require, she argues, we’ve got to encourage and engage in constrictive conflict. Margaret Heffernan
  5. 5. 4. Success is a Continuous Journey Speaker © Avery Eisenreich Richard St. John is a prominent Marketer & Success analyst. In this brilliant TED Talk that is applicable for college students and entrepreneurs alike, Richard St. John tells us that the road to success is not a one-way street, it is a continuous journey. He shows his own business ups and downs to illustrate his key message. “When you stop trying, you fail.” Richard St. John
  6. 6. 5. Technology and Social Revolution © Avery Eisenreich In this TED Talk, Apple Inc. co-founder and tech pioneer Steve 'Woz' Wozniak challenges post-secondary students to become disruptors--to think for themselves, question the world around them, come up with innovative and original ideas that have competitive advantages, and break the mold of the status quo. Steve ‘Woz’ Wozniak
  7. 7. 6. The Key to Success? Grit © Avery Eisenreich Leaving behind a career in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth accepted a job as a math teacher to seventh graders in a New York public school. It was here that she realized that IQ was not the only thing that differentiated successful students from those that struggled to make the grade. In this TED Talks video, Angela Lee Duckworth explains her theory of "grit" as a means to finding ones success. Angela Lee Duckworth
  8. 8. 7. How to Make Stress Your Friend © Avery Eisenreich Stress and College are synonymous for Kelly McGonigal, a health psychologist. Stress is unavoidable in college, but how you handle it can make all the difference, she argues. In the TED Talk, McGoningal urges college students to see stress as a positive, and introduces us to a silent mechanism for stress reduction. Kelly McGonigal
  9. 9. 8. The Life-Long Learner © Avery Eisenreich Ben Dunlap is an American author and academic, who was the president of Wofford College from July 2000 to 2013. In this TED Talk, he emphasizes the importance of being a life-long learner. By sharing stories of past greats, he got to some bewildering insight into how to become a great leader. The video provides excellent tips for entrepreneurs and college students on how to stay ahead of the game. Ben Dunlap
