When Managed File Tranfer (MFT) meets DevOPs

For large organizations, success will now result on their ability to develop and use software. They are adopting DevOps to shortcut the time to market from business requirement to solution deployment. They are leveraging PPT, the three pillars for DevOps: People, Processes, Technology. As a result they are automating more and more their IT operations. As a matter of fact current file transfer solutions are not easy to integrate in such a DevOps framework. 1/ There is no repository of existing file transfer and ability to detect the impact an application change may have on existing file transfer. 2/ There are no API to command the deployment of file transfers from a DevOps orchestration tool.
It is time to deploy to be MFT:ready for DevOps.

  3. 3. 3 Software is the key enabler for our business 64% Software provides significant support for our business 32% Software’s role is primarily the automation of manual tasks 4% it plays a limited role in competitive advantage, and we focus on optimizing IT cost it makes business processes run more smoothly and enables key areas, but is not the foundation of the business business success depends on having high-quality applications that enable modern business models Base: 200 IT decision-makers at North American and European companies with visibility into or responsibility for their organization’s application delivery pipeline Source: A commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of HP, April 2015

  7. 7. 7 Development QA Ops Go West young man Business is under pressure and puts the pressure on me I need to develop faster, to run faster cycles I use the latest technologies. IT Ops is between me and my success Release… Release, … If it ain't broke, don't fix it Changes mean risks It may stop the business My job is to make sure it runs not to adapt/adopt new things I am not paid to learn new things Developers are putting my career in danger
  8. 8. 8 Rare release High effort - High risk • Dev blame Ops and vice –versa • Late discovery of code performance issues • Failure found eventually by customers • Shadow IT is growing • Late response to business • Hinder to Innovation • Big bang effects • Poor quality
  9. 9. 9 DevOps is about breaking down the Development & Operations Silo and getting both focused on the business goals of software • every 11.6s • 23,000 deployments a day • 75% fewer outages since 2006 • 90% fewer outage minutes • 0.001% deployments cause a problem John Jenkins @Velocity 2011 Frequent releases Reduced effort Less risk

  15. 15. • As the business models of retailers, financial services companies and firms in other industries become more dependent on digital technologies, they will adopt DevOps • It’s going to be beneficial to have operations folks working more closely with product development to respond to what customers want and will buy • To promote DevOps, CIOs must change how they assess and reward software developers and operations staff 15 Laurie Wurster, a research director at Gartner in 2015
  16. 16. • When dealing with legacy applications, things are not so clear • Some pieces are not entering the DevOps loop and create grey areas • Bringing back again: – Surprises (Bad) – Unexpected errors – Business disruptions – Extra costs and delay 16
