ECDL
Delivering employability skills

bcs.org/ecdl/centres
‘We see ECDL as the market leader in IT user training.
It covers every application you need, to get on in
today’s working environment, and the three levels
cater for the different types of learner who visit our centres.’
Jayne Railton Senior Performance Manager Potential4Skills

ECDL: the global standard in IT user skills
Digital literacy is now vital for
progression in the 21st century.
Essential services are increasingly
being moved online and over 90% of
the UK’s job adverts are requesting
digitally literate applicants1, as
businesses become dependent on
IT and require employees who can
contribute to achieving business
goals in the most efficient and
productive manner.

Flexible and relevant
ECDL is flexible, allowing you to build
qualifications around the specific needs
of your learners, across QCF levels 1, 2
and 3. From using email and the
internet, to word processing and
presentation software, you can choose
from a comprehensive portfolio of
ECDL units to deliver the skills your
learners require, at a competency level
that’s appropriate.

ECDL from BCS, The Chartered
Institute for IT, equips your learners
with the skills, as well as the
confidence, to use a computer
effectively – boosting their chances
of success in the job market and
enabling them to fully interact in our
digital society.

BCS is the sole licensed body for ECDL
in the UK and our ECDL qualifications
are accredited and attract funding.
With the growth of IT apprenticeships,
Adult Learner Responsive (ALR)
funding, and the increasing requirement
from employers for IT proficient
employees, there has never been a
better time to offer ECDL and tap into its
valuable revenue stream.

Tried, tested and trusted
ECDL (European Computer Driving
Licence) is the world's number one IT
user qualification and the benchmark
for digital literacy in educational
systems around the globe. ECDL
programmes have been delivered to
more than 13 million people; learners
of all ages across 148 countries.
Over 2.5 million people in the UK alone
have taken ECDL since 1997.
As a result ECDL is now widely
acknowledged by employers as proof
of competence when using IT, making
it a valuable credential on any
learner’s CV.

Manual testing is included with each
ECDL registration. Online assessment
is available from approved suppliers,
where results are instant and
certificates are dispatched to
successful candidates within days.

We provide posters and leaflets to
help you promote your ECDL courses.

‘One of the reasons we
get so many requests to
study ECDL is because
individuals are realising
they require it to gain
employment. It’s also a
requirement for many
college courses’.

Digital Skills
Delivering skills for a digital world

‘Digital skills are now vital
for education and employment.
We know that you’re 25%
more likely to get work when
you have web skills.’
Martha Lane Fox UK Digital Champion

Skills for life in a digital world
For many of us, it’s hard to imagine
life without the internet, Facebook, our
iPod or Skype. Yet there are many
people who miss out on the benefits of
digital technology simply because they
don’t have the understanding or the
confidence to use it.

The e-learning programme remembers
a learner’s progress and helps them
to advance at a pace they find
comfortable. Content is highly relevant,
featuring current products such as
iTunes and Facebook that engage with
the learner.

From the basics of getting online to
interacting via social networking sites;
from turning on a digital camera to
sharing photos online; Digital Skills
from BCS allows learners to tap into
these skills and make the most of
today’s online and digital devices.

Digital Skills comes complete with
learning plans, training materials and
assessment. For each learner, tutors
can access a full learning record which
shows the modules completed, time
of last access, hours spent and
assessment performance.

Digital Skills is the entry level course
that combines IT user skills with digital
media skills. It appeals to people of all
ages and abilities as it assumes no
prior knowledge of digital technology
but instead provides learners with
their own digital literacy at their
own pace.
The qualification is available as two
options, to suit your learners’
requirements. Digital Skills – Getting
Started is the two-unit option that
helps learners to get started on a
computer and the internet. The full
seven-unit option, Digital Skills,
provides the basics as well as the
skills to enjoy a range of other digital
media including video software, music,
photography and social networking.
Interactive learning
Digital Skills training is delivered
online using interactive exercises
structured into easy-to-learn units.
All your learner needs is a computer
with internet access – making the
qualification ideal for in-class,
distance or blended learning.

How is it assessed?
Learners’ understanding is assessed
online through a mixture of multiplechoice and simulated questions.
The assessment is innovative and
interactive, while remaining suited to
the level of learning. When your
learner is ready, you assign the time
and date of assessment (which must be
carried out at your approved centre).
Designed for access
Digital Skills is accessible for special
needs education settings. Accessibility
features include audio transcripts for
all training and assessment materials;
specific themes to aid dyslexia and
colour blindness; and a high contrast
theme for learners with severe
visual impairment.

The confidence to get online

Computer and Online Basics is the
unique and easy solution. This
innovative qualification is designed to
give absolute beginners the confidence
and the skills they need to safely use a
computer and get online.
*Internet access quarterly update,

Accessible skills
Computer and Online Basics is
delivered using a high quality, paper
workbook – a familiar format for
learners which is easy to follow. The
workbook guides them, step by step,
through the learning and allows them
to develop their understanding and
confidence at their own pace.
There is no exam at the end. Instead
learners verify their understanding by
completing simple tasks as they
progress through the workbook, writing
answers to questions within the book.
To achieve their qualification, they
simply complete the workbook to the
satisfaction of the tutor.
Easy to learn, easy to deliver
For training providers, Computer and
Online Basics couldn’t be simpler to
deliver. Its unassuming approach
supports learners in overcoming their

fears and, with minimal guidance from
the tutor, learners are soon completing
tasks on a computer and discovering
the benefits of getting online.

Computer and Online Basi

The workbook format provides
the tutor with clear and complete
evidence of learning activity. As a
good-quality single source, it is easy
to store, hand out and manage –
and a handy reference tool for
learners to take away with them at
the end of the course.
This delivery method is suitable for
mixed-ability classes and drop-in
sessions, where individuals require
varying degrees of support, with some
working largely on their own.

What’s covered?
Computer and Online Basics begins
by explaining the basic elements of
a computer before introducing the
desktop, basic word processing
skills, the internet and email.
For learners who already have
basic computer skills but lack the
confidence to get online, Online
Basics can be delivered on its own
as a reduced course.

The latest figures from the Office of

still 7.1 million adults in the UK who
have never used the internet*. As more
services are moved online and the cost
of physical interaction rises, it’s vital
that we provide support for those who
have so far avoided computers and
the web.
BCS Computer and Online Basics
For absolute beginners, Computer and Online Basics is the ideal way to get started on a computer and the internet. Online

IT user qualifications (for colleges and trainig centres)

  • 2. ‘We see ECDL as the market leader in IT user training. It covers every application you need, to get on in today’s working environment, and the three levels cater for the different types of learner who visit our centres.’ Jayne Railton Senior Performance Manager Potential4Skills ECDL: the global standard in IT user skills Digital literacy is now vital for progression in the 21st century. Essential services are increasingly being moved online and over 90% of the UK’s job adverts are requesting digitally literate applicants1, as businesses become dependent on IT and require employees who can contribute to achieving business goals in the most efficient and productive manner. Flexible and relevant ECDL is flexible, allowing you to build qualifications around the specific needs of your learners, across QCF levels 1, 2 and 3. From using email and the internet, to word processing and presentation software, you can choose from a comprehensive portfolio of ECDL units to deliver the skills your learners require, at a competency level that’s appropriate. ECDL from BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, equips your learners with the skills, as well as the confidence, to use a computer effectively – boosting their chances of success in the job market and enabling them to fully interact in our digital society. BCS is the sole licensed body for ECDL in the UK and our ECDL qualifications are accredited and attract funding. With the growth of IT apprenticeships, Adult Learner Responsive (ALR) funding, and the increasing requirement from employers for IT proficient employees, there has never been a better time to offer ECDL and tap into its valuable revenue stream. Tried, tested and trusted ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) is the world's number one IT user qualification and the benchmark for digital literacy in educational systems around the globe. ECDL programmes have been delivered to more than 13 million people; learners of all ages across 148 countries. Over 2.5 million people in the UK alone have taken ECDL since 1997. As a result ECDL is now widely acknowledged by employers as proof of competence when using IT, making it a valuable credential on any learner’s CV. Manual testing is included with each ECDL registration. Online assessment is available from approved suppliers, where results are instant and certificates are dispatched to successful candidates within days. We provide posters and leaflets to help you promote your ECDL courses. e-skills UK Ian Rees Bridgend College Simple delivery and assessment To support your ECDL delivery, optional courseware is available from BCS partners in both written and online format. All material is quality assured by BCS to ensure your learners have the best possible chance of passing their qualification first time. For further information visit bcs.org/ecdl/centres 1 ‘One of the reasons we get so many requests to study ECDL is because individuals are realising they require it to gain employment. It’s also a requirement for many college courses’. ECDL Digital skills to get ahead bcs.org/ecdl/learner

  • 5. ‘Digital skills are now vital for education and employment. We know that you’re 25% more likely to get work when you have web skills.’ Martha Lane Fox UK Digital Champion Skills for life in a digital world For many of us, it’s hard to imagine life without the internet, Facebook, our iPod or Skype. Yet there are many people who miss out on the benefits of digital technology simply because they don’t have the understanding or the confidence to use it. The e-learning programme remembers a learner’s progress and helps them to advance at a pace they find comfortable. Content is highly relevant, featuring current products such as iTunes and Facebook that engage with the learner. From the basics of getting online to interacting via social networking sites; from turning on a digital camera to sharing photos online; Digital Skills from BCS allows learners to tap into these skills and make the most of today’s online and digital devices. Digital Skills comes complete with learning plans, training materials and assessment. For each learner, tutors can access a full learning record which shows the modules completed, time of last access, hours spent and assessment performance. Digital Skills is the entry level course that combines IT user skills with digital media skills. It appeals to people of all ages and abilities as it assumes no prior knowledge of digital technology but instead provides learners with their own digital literacy at their own pace. The qualification is available as two options, to suit your learners’ requirements. Digital Skills – Getting Started is the two-unit option that helps learners to get started on a computer and the internet. The full seven-unit option, Digital Skills, provides the basics as well as the skills to enjoy a range of other digital media including video software, music, photography and social networking. Interactive learning Digital Skills training is delivered online using interactive exercises structured into easy-to-learn units. All your learner needs is a computer with internet access – making the qualification ideal for in-class, distance or blended learning. How is it assessed? Learners’ understanding is assessed online through a mixture of multiplechoice and simulated questions. The assessment is innovative and interactive, while remaining suited to the level of learning. When your learner is ready, you assign the time and date of assessment (which must be carried out at your approved centre). Designed for access Digital Skills is accessible for special needs education settings. Accessibility features include audio transcripts for all training and assessment materials; specific themes to aid dyslexia and colour blindness; and a high contrast theme for learners with severe visual impairment. For further information visit bcs.org/digitalskills We provide leaflets to help you promote your Digital Skills courses. Digital Skills Skills for life in a digital worl d bcs.org/digitalskills

  • 8. ‘Many unemployed adults are finding that they would have benefited from IT training at school, as the importance of using IT to search and apply for employment electronically becomes apparent to them.’ BCS approved centre The confidence to get online Computer and Online Basics is the unique and easy solution. This innovative qualification is designed to give absolute beginners the confidence and the skills they need to safely use a computer and get online. *Internet access quarterly update, 14 August 2013 Accessible skills Computer and Online Basics is delivered using a high quality, paper workbook – a familiar format for learners which is easy to follow. The workbook guides them, step by step, through the learning and allows them to develop their understanding and confidence at their own pace. There is no exam at the end. Instead learners verify their understanding by completing simple tasks as they progress through the workbook, writing answers to questions within the book. To achieve their qualification, they simply complete the workbook to the satisfaction of the tutor. Easy to learn, easy to deliver For training providers, Computer and Online Basics couldn’t be simpler to deliver. Its unassuming approach supports learners in overcoming their fears and, with minimal guidance from the tutor, learners are soon completing tasks on a computer and discovering the benefits of getting online. Computer and Online Basi cs (Windows 7 / Office 2010) ws The workbook format provides the tutor with clear and complete evidence of learning activity. As a good-quality single source, it is easy to store, hand out and manage – and a handy reference tool for learners to take away with them at the end of the course. This delivery method is suitable for mixed-ability classes and drop-in sessions, where individuals require varying degrees of support, with some working largely on their own. Course workbook What’s covered? Computer and Online Basics begins by explaining the basic elements of a computer before introducing the desktop, basic word processing skills, the internet and email.
