Executive Employment Trends
Q2 2013
2 © BPI group
BPI group has established this Executive Employment Trends Report to offer visibility into the current
executive job market. We are committed to quality and results in our outplacement programs, and believe that
keeping a careful eye on trends in the market is an important way to ensure we are meeting the needs of our
career transition clients. The findings of this report are based on a survey of our executive clients who began
their job search from Q2 2012 through Q2 2013.
The Executive Employment Trends Report includes analysis of the following executive employment trends:
– Average length of the executive job search
– How the length of the job search is impacted by various factors, including:
• Base Salary Level
• Education Level
• Gender
• Age
We look forward to continuing to share the latest trends in executive employment. If you would like to learn
more about our approach to executive outplacement services, please contact Patricia Siderius, Managing
Director, Executive Outplacement Services, at psiderius@bpi-group.us or +1.630.613-6373.

Key Takeaway: The average length of the job search decreased throughout 2012 and Q1 of
2013. This trend is consistent with the findings of our Q1 2013 report, as well as the national
average length of unemployment, which decreased from 9 months in June 2012 to 8.2
months in June 2013.

Key Takeaway: Women executives landed new jobs in an average of 3.5 months, 32% faster than the 5.2
month average for men. This was a reversal of our prior Q1 2012 – Q1 2013 findings, where women took an
average of 4.9 months in the job search, and men an average of 4.4 months. We believe these findings are
influenced by the pool of executive clients who responded to the survey in Q2, and are not indicative of a
larger trend.

Key Takeaway: Average length of the job search decreased progressively with age, with an average job
search of 5.9 months for 31-40 year-olds, 5.0 months for 41-50 year-olds, and 4.6 months for 51-60 year-
olds. This was also a change from Q1 2012 – Q1 2013, where average length of the job search increased
with age. The shorter job search time for executives in the 51-60 age range indicates an increase in the
market of senior-level positions in the first two quarters of 2013, particularly in the areas of finance,
operations, IT and sales.

This was a reversal of our prior Q1 2012 – Q1 2013 findings, where women took an average of 4.9 months in the job search, and men an average of 4.4 months. We believe these findings are influenced by the pool of executive clients who responded to the survey in Q2, and are not indicative of a larger trend.
  • 10. 10 © BPI group EXECUTIVE EMPLOYMENT TREND: AGE GROUP 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 31-40 41-50 51-60 Months Average Time to New Job by Age Range 5% 38% 53% 4% Survey Sample: Age Range 31-40 41-50 51-60 61+ Key Takeaway: Average length of the job search decreased progressively with age, with an average job search of 5.9 months for 31-40 year-olds, 5.0 months for 41-50 year-olds, and 4.6 months for 51-60 year- olds. This was also a change from Q1 2012 – Q1 2013, where average length of the job search increased with age. The shorter job search time for executives in the 51-60 age range indicates an increase in the market of senior-level positions in the first two quarters of 2013, particularly in the areas of finance, operations, IT and sales.
