This presentation was given at Different Games, an NYU-Georgia Tech conference on diversity in games. /// Following The Green Light --- The introduction of Valve’s online distribution platform, Steam, has dramatically changed the face of video game access on a global level: from developers trying to get “Greenlit”, to gamers in emerging economies making the most out of $5 game sales, the current state of the game industry is characterized by an ever increasing digitalization of distribution means. This trend is present in other realms, like Kickstarter’s rise to the aid of indie creators, the episodic release of games, and the creation of “bundles”, or packages of games for low costs, in the name charity. The economical impact of this digitalization is clear, but what are its implications for inclusion of dissident voices in the gaming community? Beyond the obvious advantages that online access delivers to small creators from all around the world, the relationship between a player and a game’s creators has become more direct, while at the same time being depersonalized by commoditization. Online distribution platforms, born from an instrumental need to sell more in an easier way, are reflecting the inter sectorial limitations and gaps that diverse game creators are currently experiencing in the offline world. The project synthesizes distribution models in game creation history, analyzing their affordances for the inclusion of diversity in both the conception of games and their reception amongst players. It then visualizes possible paths for future distribution systems, emphasizing those that present the most potential for incrementing the participation of minorities and diverse designers in the games industry. “Following the Green Light” is a prospective design project being developed by Andrea Morales, grad student at the Transdisciplinary Design MFA in Parsons The New School of Design.

Introduction to the U.S. Legal System: Précis Assignment Alternative What it is and Why Précis writing may be a bit different from writing you have been assigned in the past. A précis (pronounced PRAY-SEE) is a comprehensive yet distilled summary of a written work’s important points, claims, and substantiating evidence. The purpose is to clearly and effectively dissect and communicate to an audience the essence of a written work. By completing this assignment, you will have gained familiarity with an important, ongoing debate concerning the role of courts in the United States and their relationship to social change. Assignment Read the Introduction, Chapter 2, and Chapter 3 of Gerald Rosenberg’s The Hollow Hope (1991). In a two-page, carefully edited, free-of-errors document, summarize the main arguments that Rosenberg is making about the role and power of courts in society. In the course of doing so, you should also: (a) carefully outline the issue area the author is examining, (b) describe the relationship between courts and the other branches of the U.S. government, (c) assess the evidence the author uses to support his broader thesis concerning the roles and powers of courts. Note that this assignment is to be completed individually, and the UIW policy on academic honesty applies. Some tips: · Take a “first-read” through the assigned chapters to gain an overall sense of the argument, issue, evidence, and explanations offered. · Take a careful, more thorough “Second-Read” of the assigned excerpts. As you do so, create an outline (typed or handwritten) that allows you to organize the chapters by headings and subheadings, including the issue areas, claims, evidence, and explanations you find particularly important. Be sure to cite the pages where these claims appear. · Draft your précis by, in your own words, stitching together your summary. Transition smoothly from point to point. Again, you will have to make some difficult choices here so as to capture the essence of the readings (balancing comprehensiveness with distillation). · Ensure you use new paragraphs when moving to new areas explored by the author. · Review your document, revising and editing when necessary. Make sure sentences make sense when spoken aloud, avoid complicated words and sentence structures, use spell check, and ensure proper punctuation and capitalization is present. Formatting Failure to follow the formatting requirements below will result in deductions equivalent to at least one full letter grade: · 2 pages, stapled before class (no paperclips, dog-eared corners, etc.) · Single-spaced (double-space ONLY when beginning a new paragraph). · No title. · Times New Roman, 12 point font. · 1-inch margins on all sides. · Page numbers at the bottom of each page, centered. · Single-sided printing ONLY. · Citations to particular pages when referencing specific points, or paraphrasing the author’s words (i.e., (p. 55)). If you are referencing man ...

CS project notes 1 Notes for Final Project Dissertation This document contains an overview of the marking scheme for projects with some notes that should be useful for planning, executing and writing up your final project dissertation. This should be useful for anyone taking a project module but is aimed in particular towards students in the Computer Science course group (CS, CGT). 1 Marking Criteria Title – Meaningful, descriptive but not too long (must not promise anything that you do not deliver) Abstract – brief overview of what you did (last thing to be written) Introduction (10%) State the hypothesis and aims, background to subject leading to a definition of the 'problem' or 'application domain' for your work, what you hope to achieve (i.e. what aspect you are addressing with your work) and how you intend to go about it (more details in the methodology section). Make sure you have appropriate title and achievable aims Use of Literature (15%) Can be in its own section but 'use of literature' applies to whole document. Brief description i.e. (a single paragraph) of 4 – 10 key texts (but this number rather depends on the work you are doing) where you say what was useful for your work. Also remember to use citations throughout your work as you introduce ideas and make claims that need support. Overview of alternative approaches and software can also go here or in the introduction. Methodology (20%) Rational for approach, i.e. why use this way of solving the problem? Design (often big enough to be its own section) provide specification, description and diagrams. Marks given for originality and difficulty of task Implementation and results (15%) Description of functionality and provision of evidence (testing). Make sure you are clear about what resources you have used and what is 'your' contribution. Summary of test output (raw data mostly in appendices) Can also provide screen capture video clips and snapshots Usefulness and usability for intended audience. Discussion – what has your work demonstrated, how has this effected the target problem / application area. Discussion (20%) Interpretation of results Evaluation of approach Wider implications of work Discussion – what has your work demonstrated, how has this effected the target problem / application area. This will need to link to other work / applications so you may need to reference some of the literature and/or add to your references with some more research. Conclusion (10%) Brief summary of what has been achieved, Critical appraisal of work and future work / improvements to be made. Presentation (15%) - discuss with project supervisor, here are some general suggestions. Layout, use of English, spelling, grammar, academic style, binding, Turnitin report. Use page numbers, numbered headings and sub-headings, contents list for headings and figures, running headers with chapter title and appendices. Code printed out to.

The Research Proposal: An Explanatory Template for BUS8115 and BUS8120 for Chapters 4 – 5 of the Dissertation Submitted to South University College of Business In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Business Administration Insert Name Here Month Year THE RESEARCH PROPOSAL BUS8115 AND BUS8120 The signature page for the defended and approved dissertation will be inserted on this page of the document. Abstract An abstract is a brief, comprehensive summary of the entire proposal, typically ranging from 150 to 250 words. The APA manual notes the type of information that should be included in abstracts for different types of studies. In general, the abstract outlines the major headings: the research question, theoretical framework, research design, sampling method, instrumentation, and data and analysis procedures. In a final dissertation, the abstract also outlines key findings and interpretations. A reader should gain a high level understanding of the entire document from its abstract. Do not add any information in the abstract that is not discussed throughout the dissertation. Because it highlights the entire proposal, researchers often write the abstract after the remainder of the document. Writing an abstract is an important skill requiring the ability to be concise. In publications, the abstract is often the first thing potential readers review to determine whether to continue reading your work. THE RESEARCH PROPOSAL BUS8115 AND BUS8120 2 Dedication You may provide a brief dedication on this page. The dedication should be no more than one page. You will complete the dedication in BUS8120. You may find it helpful to research examples of dedications in dissertations. Acknowledgements You may provide brief acknowledgements on this page. The acknowledgements should be no more than one to two pages. You will complete the acknowledgements in BUS8120. You may find it helpful to research examples of acknowledgements in dissertations. List of Tables Similar to the table of contents, list tables (including caption and page number location) on this page. Refer to the APA manual for guidance. You will complete this task in BUS8120. List of Figures Similar to the table of contents, list any figures (including caption and page number location) used in your dissertation. Refer to the APA manual for guidance. You will complete this task in BUS8120. The table of contents outlines your study for the reader. The easiest way to create the table of contents is to use the levels of heading feature in Microsoft Word. For example, this template has already been set up using headings (in Microsoft Word editing utilities) for the major portions of the outline. Subsequently, Microsoft Word will automatically create the table of contents, which has been started below, by using the Table of Contents feature in the references tab of Word (although note, different versions of Word sometimes locate options in different places).
