EDITORIAL
Balmer Lawrie Organisational Gazette [BLOG] commenced its journey as a half yearly House Journal
in October 2011 and then it was published as a quarterly house journal from 2012. BLOG has
successfully completed a decade and it will be our endeavour to continuously innovate and bring
you content that is topical from Balmer Lawrie perspective and optimize internal communications
in line with the organisation’s strategic priorities of greater connect with employees. Needless to
mention, employee contributions have made BLOG a meaningful in-house communication platform.
I thank all employees who have contributed to the house journal in the last decade.
Typically, each issue of BLOG is based on a theme, covering a business or function, in order to
highlight its noteworthy initiatives, achievements and the people behind them. This issue of BLOG
focusses on Health, Safety and Environment (HSE). While you will get to explore the various facets
of HSE in this issue, I will take this opportunity to remind all our colleagues working in plants and
factories to always remember the following:
• Secure yourself if working above 6 feet high. [Use harness and helmet]
• Isolate energy sources before any inspection or maintenance work. [Use LOTO]
• Obtain Permit before entering Confined Spaces. [Isolate all energies and check oxygen level]
• Obtain valid Work Permit before non- routine jobs
• Do not stand below suspended load
• Safety critical devices must be inspected in good working condition. [Lifting equipment,
pressure vessels, Relays etc.]
• Do not excavate without permit and knowledge of buried hazards
• Assess risk before any change in process, equipment, material or people
• Task specific PPEs are must before performing work
• Engine ON, Mobile OFF and buckle up before driving
I would like to thank Mr. Ashis Boral, Head [HSE & SD] and Mr. Shibanta De, Deputy Manager [HSE]
for all the support they have provided to publish this issue. I’m sure all of you will get interesting
insights about the evolving role of HSE in our workplace and will enjoy reading the issue. Please email
your suggestions, feedback and contribution for the ‘Talent Unlimited’ column to mukhopadhyay.

further taught us the significance of maintaining good safety and health practices.
Safety is about people. Though we do audits and review facts and figures, I want a culture where every single
employee has a workplace that is free from the risk of injuries and accidents, and most importantly he / she
should feel safe. While Leadership accountability and a strong policy framework is needed to strengthen the
HSE culture, a bottom-up approach is imperative. At Balmer Lawrie safety goals are well integrated in overall
Business goals. We need to identify and promote young Executives / Officers who are evangelists of Behaviour
Based Safety (BBS) and are proactively working towards fostering the HSE culture. Training and development
is extremely important to keep employees abreast of latest HSE trends and best practices. Though the HSE
Department has been conducting host of training programs covering various topics, we must develop internal
pool of Executives who can conduct regular trainings locally across regions to ensure top of the mind recall
of mandatories. There should be no lapse on regulatory compliances at any point in time. We should build a
culture where all of us rely on everyone to look out for each other. Safety has to be everyone’s responsibility and
I strongly encourage everyone to speak up if there’s an issue. It is important to walk the talk. Training should
be conducted for everyone, no matter what their role is. Awareness is extremely important. I’m glad to see how
our young employees are stepping up when it comes to safety. It makes a difference when people own things.
We all know that a good safety culture leads to higher productivity, better quality of work, reduced costs and
greater employee satisfaction.
I will encourage all to look at our Company’s HSE and Sustainability policy. Integrating environment protection
initiatives and occupational health & safety with all business processes to avoid harm to employees, contractors,
visitors and the community has been our priority. However, our ultimate goal as an organisation should be to
benchmark with leading global MNCs where ‘Vision Zero’ is the culture. Such organisations aim to achieve
zero fatalities, zero injuries, zero accidents of any kind, zero process incidents and of course zero tolerance of
unsafe behaviour and practices. In the financial year 2021-22 we have achieved Zero Loss Time Injury (LTI). Our
HSE Department has conducted significant number of safety trainings, mock drills in our factories and offices
pan India. In our plants, all employees (by rotation) are given the responsibility for safety inspection. Regular
awareness workshops on behaviour-based safety, tool box talks and training sessions on various safety topics
are conducted. However, as we are into businesses that involve hazardous processes, being watchful at every
juncture is important. It has been a practice to celebrate excellence in Safety at Balmer Lawrie. I congratulate
all the winners of the safety audit this year and encourage all units to constantly strive for HSE excellence. In the
new Reward and Recognition policy, HSE elements are factored in for evaluation of various awards.
We have embraced sustainability and to successfully achieve our future goals, we have made HSE a way of life
at Balmer Lawrie. We stand committed to all our stakeholders!
LEADERSHIP SPEAKS
Adika Ratna Sekhar
Chairman & Managing Director
I would like to begin my message with a very famous quote of
Benjamin Franklin - “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound
of cure.” When we talk about workplace Health, Safety and
Environment (HSE), one of the key elements of best practices
is prevention. You would agree with me that continuous small
preventive steps taken proactively can thwart safety incidents of
epic proportions. Compliance, discipline, accountability, common
sense and awareness are other factors that help to create a robust
HSE culture in the organisation. When an incident occurs, what
we see is just the tip of the iceberg; a larger problem lies below
the surface. We cannot afford to be peripheral and shallow in our
approach to HSE in the workplace. I am happy that this issue of
Balmer Lawrie Organisational Gazette [BLOG] is a special issue
highlighting the importance of health, safety and environment for
an organisation. We all know that if the workplace is safe and
healthy, all of us share the benefits. The COVID-19 pandemic

for continuously reinforcing the safety culture in the organisation. Our robust Health, Safety and Environment [HSE]
Management System has an integrated approach, where all the 3 HSE factors are effectively managed to reduce
risks in the workplace. The Dos and Don’ts emerging from the HSE policy are periodically reiterated in relevant
forums to nurture Behaviour Based Safety. We must understand that the onus lies on each one of us to create and
sustain a safe workplace. For our Service Businesses’ customers, it’s ‘safety first’ always! Thus, we should leave no
stone unturned in safe handling of customer products be it in the Cold Chain Units or Container Freight Stations,
in securing last mile delivery of EXIM consignments handled by Logistics Services, and in ensuring safety of our
customers availing Travel & Vacations services. I would like to draw the attention of my colleagues in SBU: Logistics
Infrastructure to the incidents we have witnessed in the past. As a team, we should constantly strive to achieve zero
fatalities, by complying with all the facets of HSE holistically. We must encourage communication, consultation and
collaboration with all stakeholders and local communities on our operations, likely hazards and emergency response
system to mitigate the harmful impacts of product life cycle and supply chain.
I will urge all of you to ensure strict compliance of some basic things like constitution of safety committee, electrical
and mechanical safety checklist, fire safety, high visibility of PPE and signages, updated HSE communication
collaterals especially audio visual content, safe handling of material and containers by reach stackers and forklifts,
safe handling of ammonia in cold chain units etc. Balmer Lawrie is a leading integrated Logistics solutions provider
and is aggressively enhancing its foothold in the Cold Chain business with its four state-of-the-art temperature
controlled cold chain units and owned fleet of temperature controlled vehicles. We have been catering to various
industry segments and safe storage and handling of products like Food, Pharma, Dairy etc. is of utmost priority. The
quality of the products at any point in time must be preserved. We should ensure high levels of hygiene. Ammonia
(refrigerant) leaks and spills in these units can be disastrous. Periodic review of our emergency response plans and
mitigation strategies will help.
With the recent growth of adoption of the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) integration approach by
various organisations both in the country and globally, the role of HSE professionals assume great significance.
I believe the HSE Department will be able to add maximum value to Businesses only when they work together
towards incorporating all facets of ESG in systems and processes. We should look at well-defined goals for meeting
larger objectives like reducing carbon footprint, adopting greener technologies and finally achieving the mandated
net zero targets. ESG focussed Logistics companies are developing eco-friendly logistics solutions based on
digital transformation, aggressively reducing industrial waste and carbon emissions, strengthening ESG support
to customers and the society and building supply chain ESG management capabilities. To boost ESG performance,
many travel and tourism companies are giving the option to travellers of picking a service or product that is more
environmentally friendly. This trend has taken off in online travel. In 2021 alone, Google Flights allowed users to
see carbon emission estimates for nearly all flights in its search results. The estimate is visible next to the price
and duration of the flight. Shortly after, Booking.com announced the launch of its Travel Sustainable badge, a
globally sustainability measure that aims to provide information to travellers looking to make more sustainable
travel choices.
Adhip Nath Palchaudhuri
Director [Service Businesses]
Accidents in the industry have been a concern for years together.
Various reports estimate shocking numbers of people succumbing
to work related accidents. According to Geneva-based IndustriALL
Global Union, which represents more than 50 million workers in 140
countries in the mining, energy and manufacturing sectors, more than
162 workers died in industrial accidents in India in 2021 highlighting the
soaring cases of accidents in industrial and commercial establishments
in recent years. It also underscored that an average of seven accidents
reported per month in 2021 also resulted in permanent disabilities and
severe injuries. As per IndustriALL, the deployment of large numbers
of contract and untrained workers in precarious jobs; poor safety
inspection systems; weak implementation of safety protocols and safety
awareness; inadequate risk assessment and response; negligence, and
the breakdown of emergency response procedures have exacerbated
the impact of the accidents.

Adhering to the ESG framework would mean future-proofing our businesses. Let’s get it right that those companies
who care would eventually win. If we are surging ahead to join the league of winners, then think Sustainability, think
ESG!
I feel very privileged to oversee the Information Technology function
in the Company, besides Finance and my role as CFO, and that’s
particularly because I am constantly nudged to keep myself updated
on new technology trends in our various Businesses and Functions.
New age technology trends have been gamechangers in revitalizing
various Businesses. Businesses and Functions are forced to keep pace
with technological advancements for competitive advantage. As this
issue of Balmer Lawrie Organisational Gazette focuses on Health,
Safety and Environment [HSE], I will try to throw some light on how
we can enhance HSE compliance and best practices using technology.
Deborah Hersman, former president and CEO of the National Safety
Council said, “Technology is moving at a much faster clip than our laws
can keep up with.”
With Balmer Lawrie being present in both Manufacturing and Services
Businesses, HSE goals are varied and all elements need equal attention
when driving overall systems and processes excellence. Traditionally,
the HSE Management System (HMS) captures data from a large
Sandip Das
Director [Finance]
number of systems such as HSE observations, Near-miss reports, Incident reports, HSE inspections and HSE
audits. However, data from these reports is generally unstructured and not adequately analysed to identify
emerging high-risk areas. We have to look at technology options that can help us manage this data effectively.
We are transitioning from traditional paper based HSE processes and systems to digitised HSE data capture
systems. We have a long way to go! Progressive organisations are using leading edge digital HSE systems which
apply predictive analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Separate tools and systems for managing HSE issues
have evolved over the years, but now these are being integrated into the business in a structured way to provide
organisations with the assurance that critical HSE risks are recorded and managed effectively.
HSE data is ever growing, especially in high-risk businesses for eg. Chemicals etc. We are required to stringently
adhere to legal compliances; stakeholder expectations are high. We have also seen that even a single HSE incident
can disrupt business operations or even damage corporate reputation. It is observed that 50% to 80% of accidents
are driven by or related to humans. Thus, widespread CCTV cameras are generally installed at production sites,
plants and remote sites to monitor workmen. However, there are gaps in identifying each and every HSE violation
and take instant corrective actions. In days to come video analytics techniques can be used to identify unsafe
acts, unsafe conditions and non-compliances with the mandatory Personal Protect Equipment (PPE) requirements.
Drones and robotics need to be leveraged for surveillance in our Container Freight Stations and Temperature
Controlled Warehouses. Gas leaks through pipelines and plant vent systems can cause serious damage to the
environment. These can also potentially expose companies to environmental penalties. Image processing using
specialized cameras, drones and satellite can potentially identify the leaks from invisible sources and can help in
preventing gas leaks. New dashboard technologies can help identify, investigate, and communicate key insights to
help decision-making and awareness-building efforts. Adding advanced analytics to the mix creates a powerful tool
to identify emerging risks and patterns. As an organisation we should continuously evaluate safety management
software that empowers HSE teams to make the right decisions. HSE Managers need to focus their HSE efforts
in the right place, reducing incident rates and ensuring critical HSE risks are recorded and managed effectively.
Effective HSE management is more crucial than ever. We just cannot afford to ignore technology advancements
in this area. A famous writer said, “Once a new technology rolls over you, if you’re not part of the steamroller,
you’re part of the road.” Best wishes to the HSE team!

and adopting the new technologies are very much essential for sustainability. In the Industrial Packaging business, we
are a role model only because of technological advantages. Year on year it is being upgraded. Recent development called
staggered blanking is a good example for this topic “adoption of new technologies with enhanced green manufacturing
and sustainability”. Series reaction in the Chemicals business in another live example. Improved efficiencies, minimised
wastages and implemented technologies have helped to keep the business way above our competitors. Our entry into
finishing chemical technology has opened other avenues like textile and agro chemicals. We have clearly understood the
importance of adoption of new technology. It’s time to gear up our research and development activities to keep the track
problem free, to move ahead of competition and the most important thing to keep our planet green.
HEAR FROM BUSINESS LEADERS!
R M Uthayaraja
Executive Director
[IndustrialPackaging&Chemicals]
How do you think adoption of new technology with enhance green
manufacturing and sustainability in business?
There are two important parameters for a successful business. One is
quality and another is technology. Quality is like a hall ticket for writing an
exam; without quality we cannot enter any business. Let us discuss about
technology. Although it’s not a panacea, technology has the power to increase
productivity, efficiency and cost savings, reduce product waste, analyse and
track progress, all of which can help minimise the impact on the environment.
Today, the major issue is global warming. All manufacturing companies are
responsible and there is a need to upgrade the existing technologies to
improve the efficiencies and to reduce the wastages.
In the process of Manufacturing, technology plays a major role to keep not
only the cost of production low but also to stop damaging the environment.
Across the world, technology is emerging as key driver of socio-economic
transformation. India is not only among the emerging economies of the world
but there is also a considerable appetite for technology innovation here. There is
a determination to leverage technology for development and growth. Developing

business and Balmer Lawrie’s initiatives in this area.
When it comes to supply chains, there is no downtime. Various activities
carried out in various locations at a single point of time can often lead to risk
related to safety and health. With the shift in people-oriented businesses and
technologically backed processes, safety in the logistics sector is taking a turn
for good. Global trend is more focused on ensuring that people are the number
one priority. Many initiatives like offering continuous safety trainings, promoting
cross function communication and providing the necessary tools and resources
to the workforce, are steps in the right direction.  Technology is also playing a
major role in logistics with direct updates to the end Customer, right from the
production unit till the cargo reaches to the doorstep. Automation of routine
activities has heavily cut down on the turnaround time also minimising the risks
involved in the operations. Some of the few trends that are being implemented
to increased safety in logistics are as follows:
Romon Sebastian Louis
COO[LogisticsInfrastructure]
• Infrastructure companies are leveraging the assets and planning for energy needs for future.
• Organisations have been increasing the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and software processes to decrease
manpower wherever possible so that the jobs can be automated.
• AI can automate repetitive tasks and therefore remove employees from potential risks and injuries occurring
in hazardous environments. It has also been reported that up to 80% of accidents that occur in the workplace
are human-related.
• Withtechnology,AIremote-monitoringsolutioncanbeadaptedforamultitudeofindustriesandenvironments,

• From the lessons learnt from COVID-19, companies are addressing Environment, Social and Governance
parameters in a more holistic way.
• Remote audits and inspections are becoming a sort of norm to maintain the HSE operating procedures.
• Mental health is being integrated with EHS to increase the productivity of employee’s wellness and safety.
• Companies have been putting efforts to maintain a separate budget to increase the focus on HSE activities
for improved training programs targeting for zero fatalities in the working environment.
SBU: Logistics Infrastructure is innovating and leading in safety trends, with implementation of new systems
and processes; a few noticeable ones can be mentioned as:
• Installation of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to ensure wastewater management and zero discharge from the plant.
• Carrying out destruction of perishable cargo in eco-friendly biodegradable way (earlier destruction was
carried out by incineration causing huge carbon footprint).
• Go green initiatives include planting of nearly 1000 plants and saplings in each Container Freight Station
across India.
• ISO certification for Quality, OHS and Environment across the units.
• Installation of fire balls, automated sprinkler system and flame proof lights in hazardous areas.
• Structural and Electrical Audits along with necessary corrective actions to ensure proper health of the
infrastructure.
• Technology driven initiatives like RFID tracking and customer portal to minimise movement within the yard.
• Electrical sensors in office spaces to detect man movement for electricity saving.
• Installation of drive through weighbridges to minimise handling of containers thus ensuring lower carbon
footprint for the same activity.
• Regular skill assessment and appropriate safety trailing to keep the work force updated.
Balmer Lawrie is a leader in the ROFS business. What are the
benchmark worthy HSE best practices that we follow?
We strongly believe in delivering our services with strong environment
consciousness, endorsing a safe workplace and enrichment of quality
of life of employees. We have nurtured resilience at every worksite and
set a target of Zero Tolerance policy for maintaining Safety, Health &

hazardous areas. Apart from that they are also periodically examined to study the effect of hazards. In addition,
employees, sub-contractors, and their entire workforce are regularly imparted training on work-related hazards
and ways and means to protect themselves from such hazards. Some of these programmes are:
	Awareness on occupational health hazards
	First aid
	Use of PPE
Safety: We inculcate values and attitudes conducive to achieving excellence in maintaining safety at each work
site by fulfilling safety guidelines set by our customers in the following manner:
	Mechanical integrity of equipment / system is ensured by condition monitoring, periodical inspection, and
preventive/predictive maintenance for reliable and safe operation
Organisational Gazette

	Regular safety training is imparted for employees and contract workmen.
	SOP is reviewed to ensure integrity of procedure.
	Use of proper PPE is enforced, and strict supervision is maintained.
	Participation in safety Audits conducted by senior Safety officials.
	Review of emergency response plan periodically to check effectiveness.
	Maintaining of records at each site and system for immediate escalation for incidents /accidents.
Environment: Our contribution towards “Prevent, Reduce, Reuse and Recover’ which are the fundamental
principles being followed by Oil Majors, is remarkable. We showcase our excellence in recovering more than
90% of hydrocarbon from Oily Sludge which is a part of Solid Waste Management and maintaining our leadership
with the help of world class technology. We also safely transfer residual sludge after hydrocarbon recovery to
the designated area for further Bio- remediation which is environmentally safe.
The major achievements of ROFS in HSE since last several years include:
1. Zero Man hour loss towards any accident or near miss incidents.
2. No penalty has been levied by any of our customers towards this account in last five years since all our customers
being in the Oil & Gas Application domain has a stringent penalty norm in force in their contract work.
ROFS is committed to uphold this in future!
Amlan Gupta
Head [Cold Chain]
Tell us about the key safety initiatives being taken in the Cold Chain
business to combat competition.
We have taken various safety initiatives in the Cold Chain SBU to combat
competition. Some of them are mentioned below:
1. Automation of chamber doors: All the chambers are having special
automatic doors for the access control, which facilitates maintaining the
set temperature of the chamber along with safety alarms provided inside
the chambers. These automated doors help us to improve the efficiency in
operations by reducing the Turn Around Time (TAT) and temperature loss.
Also, the alarm system installed ensures protection of people working inside
the chamber, and is mandated by big companies as basic pre-requisite for
safety protocol.
2. Training programs in HSE: Training and knowledge upgrading is a good HSE
practice related to food safety, HACCP, personal survival techniques, good warehousing practices etc. This is
an integral part of the SBU operations which has contributed immensely in improving the customer outlook
on HSE compliance of Balmer Lawrie cold chain units. By doing this the SBU has been able to build trust in
the customers and has enhanced the LOGICOLD brand word of mouth in the marketplace.
3. BRC Certification: British retail consortium certification for food safety bridges the missing links in the
supply chain safety and integrity in the warehousing and logistics sectors. We comply with the certification
and thus, have been achieving the control measures against WET (Waster, Error, Theft) which has enabled the
SBU gain confidence of customers as well as the stakeholders about the safety of materials entrusted to us.
This has also enabled the SBU win and retain customers who are looking at enjoying the benefits of process
adherence over price competition.
4. Adopting renewable energy: Solar power installations at our Rai and Patalganga units have helped in
reduction of operating cost and are contributing to our endeavours towards commitment to carbon neutral
operations. This enables price competitiveness and implementation of green initiatives through adoption of
carbon neutral energy.

Today the aim of the HSE function is to prioritise the holistic well-being of the working personnel. We at
Balmer Lawrie have oriented our HSE policies, programs, and practices for the holistic well-being of our
employees. With all these ongoing initiatives in a constantly improving organisational environment, Balmer
Lawrie is committed to providing improved overall health and wellbeing of all its employees. Almost all our
Units are ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified.
Balmer Lawrie has set up various standards, SOPs and internal HSE audit points. We have set up a process
to monitor the HSE performance of all the units through an effective MIS System. We have also adopted
various technologies to take care various HSE aspects, which include rudimentary things like PPE, to the
newer technologies like IOTs, RFIDs, process automation, process optimisation, net based HSE management
etc. Now, these things will not yield results unless the employees take the responsibility to adhere to it all.
All of us should be behaviourally fit to maintain and improve those processes, standards, practices and
adopting new technologies. Balmer Lawrie provides numerous HSE related trainings encompassing different
operational HSE related issues and on ergonomics, industrial hygiene, behaviour based safety etc. These
trainings are offered both in person and on virtual platform. During the COVID-19 pandemic many trainings
on COVID-19 were organised by the HSE Dept.

HSE @ Balmer Lawrie, a holistic approach!
Any advanced and modern industry today recognises that Health, Safety
and Environment [HSE], all have a direct link to the bottom line. The HSE
Function in any industry is required for sustainable business development.
Today, customers not only look at the cost of the products a Company
manufactures but also the process it follows, the concern for safety, the
green initiatives undertaken and the care for the environment. Globally,
all stakeholders have become conscious about the fact that organisations
need to care for the earth and health & safety of its employees. These
indexes are assuming great significance and are dealt with in the forefront.
The workplace safety sphere has seen significant changes in the
past few months. The hard reality can be troubling; front-line workers
are now at risk of facing health problems which the world has just
learnt to combat. The emotional impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

Balmer Lawrie has been constantly researching and implementing advanced environment friendly technologies
in its various business processes. We are replacing the conventional hazardous input materials in our plants
by less polluting ones thus, saving the environment. We have started using PNG and LPG in our Industrial
Packaging plants thus, reducing the carbon footprint of our Company. We have installed 626 Kwp on Grid
and off Grid Solar Power Plants at our different units. Some of them are exporting surplus power during
low demand period to the local Grid and earning revenue for the Company. We are planning to install more
Solar Power Plants in coming days. All our units organise large scale plantations to promote the protection
of environment. Many of our plants are Zero Liquid Discharge units. Rainwater harvesting is done at many of
our units.
Balmer Lawrie is committed to providing best of the industry working condition to its employees for physical,
emotional and mental fitness. The Company has fully equipped OHC Rooms in most of its units. Doctors are
attending our units on regular basis. We have tie up with external hospitals for immediate treatment in case of
serious accidents. Some of our units have their own ambulances. At our units medical check-ups are planned
and completed for all relevant employees as per law. In Cold Chain Business, Balmer Lawrie employees
are given different vaccines to meet FASSI and other statutory requirements. Health check-up for canteen
persons / persons preparing and delivering food are done to ascertain that they are free from all kinds of
contagious / infectious diseases. Necessary PPEs viz. SCABA and others are used and kept standby in the
units using hazardous materials.
Balmer Lawrie has well framed Onsite and Offsite Disaster Management Plans for all its Units. Mock drills are
regularly conducted at units and offices with different simulated emergency conditions for both man made
and natural disasters. Except the FY 2020-21, when we had one LTI, our Company has achieved ZERO LTI from
FY 2018-19 till date. In the last few years our units received awards and accolades from different recognised
bodies like CII, ECOVADIS, NAMC, IGMC, NSCI, BRC and the Times Group. Balmer Lawrie published the
Sustainability Report on triple bottomline for the last five consecutive financial years.
With time, the perspective of the HSE function has changed a lot. Environmental, Social and Governance
(ESG) programs have been gaining traction, especially as more investors, regulators and the general public
are demanding more accountability from organisations. From FY 2022-23, Security Exchange Board of India
(SEBI) mandated to include climate-related disclosures on a “comply or explain” basis in their Business
Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) for the Company’s listed in the Indian Stock Exchanges.
This is in line with the thrust of the NGRBCs on responsibility of businesses to encourage and support their
value chain in following the same ESG principles.
The disclosure addresses the core areas viz. (i) Governance (ii) ESG Strategy (iii) ESG Policies iv) Risk
Management v) ESG goals and metrics to achieve those goals (vi) evaluating the process and engagements in
key ESG areas. It encompasses the final goals at the society level and backtrack to define companies’ goals,
in terms of ESG policies, and metrics to achieve them.
We at Balmer Lawrie are in the midway of the transformation towards becoming a more socially and
environmentally responsible conglomerate adopting the principles of ESG and complying with BRSR disclosure
guidelines. With putting ESG at the very heart of our operations, we will be able to deliver sustainable
business. It’s an approach that will facilitate the operational, cultural and financial changes needed to future-
proof Balmer Lawrie’s businesses. With all these ongoing initiatives in a constantly improving organisational
environment, we are committed to providing risk free, healthy, hygienic and stress-free working environment
to our employees. Balmer Lawrie expects to generate more businesses by endorsing the idea that happy and
healthy employees are productive, engaged, and more likely to stay with the organisation. It will also help us
to achieve the target of Zero Incident status for all our units.

Carbon footprint reduction measures with special reference to second
generation ‘2G’ ethanol and biomimicking photosynthesis to make
carbon neutral liquid fuels
A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (including
carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our actions. A
greenhouse gas (GHG) is a gas that absorbs and emits radiant energy
within the thermal infrared range, causing the greenhouse effect. The
primary greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere are water vapor (H2
O),
carbon dioxide (CO2
), methane (CH4
), nitrous oxide (N2
O), fluorinated gases
like sulfur hexafluoride, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and perfluorocarbons
(PFCs) and ozone (O3
).
Water vapor: Water vapor is the most potent of the greenhouse gases
in Earth’s atmosphere, and the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere
cannot, in general, be directly modified by human behaviour—it’s set by air
temperatures.
V. Vijayabaskar
PDC, Chemicals - Chennai
Carbon dioxide: Of the greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (CO2
) is the most prominent. Sources of atmospheric
CO2
include volcanoes, the combustion and decay of organic matter, respiration by aerobic (oxygen-using)
organisms, and the burning of fossil fuels, clearing of land, and production of cement by humans. These sources
are balanced, on average, by a set of physical, chemical, or biological processes, called "sinks," that tend to
remove CO2
from the atmosphere. Plant life, which takes up CO2
during the process of photosynthesis, is an
important natural sink. In the oceans, marine life can absorb dissolved CO2
, and some marine organisms even
use CO2
to build skeletons and other structures made of calcium carbonate (CaCO3
).
Other Green House Gases: Methane, Nitrous oxides and Surface level ozone distinguished from naturally
occurring stratospheric O3
exists in far lower concentrations in the atmosphere.
Major carbon footprint: The energy requirement for human related activities of 70% is in the form of ‘Heat’ and
the remaining 30% is in the form of electricity. The above heat requirement is fulfilled by burning “the energy
dense fossil fuel1
” which on complete combustion results in the generation of CO2.
The concentration of carbon
dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere is currently at nearly 412 parts per million (ppm) and rising. This represents a 47
percent increase since the beginning of the Industrial Age, when the concentration was near 280 ppm, and a 11
percent increase since 2000, when it was near 370 ppm.
India’s share in CO2
emissions is 7% of world close to 2.45 Gigatons
Any hot object above absolute zero will emit heat as infra-red (IR) radiation. CO2
gas is IR active and when
energy from the sun reaches the top of our atmosphere, most of it passes through to Earth’s surface, where it is

Mitigating measures taken to reduce CO2
1. Blending of petrol with first generation (1G) and second generation (2G) ethanol. This is based on the
approach where in the amount of CO2
generated equivalent to Ethanol burnt will be offsetted by the plant /
crop residue used in making ethanol and they acted as “natural sink” utilizing CO2
for photosynthesis.
Ethanol obtained from biomass is blended partially with gasoline as its calorific value is close to 63% with
gasoline. Ethanol produced by fermentation of sugars are classified as
i. 1G ethanol – starch and sugars
Sources - Starch found in feedstocks such as cereals (wheat, barley, corn and sorghum) and sugarcane.
Their cultivation is competing with the food chain.
ii. 2G ethanol –Cellulose, hemicellulose & lignin; Sources - crop residues like wheat straw, corn stover,
wood, agricultural residues
Schemes for 1G & 2G Ethanol:
absorbed. Some of this energy is re-emitted, heading
back towards space. At this stage, it interacts with
molecules of CO2
in a way that prevents some of it
from escaping Earth's atmosphere. The trapped heat
energy leads to increased average global surface air
temperatures.
In COP26 at Glasgow, Ministers from all over the world
has agreed to cut down emission by 7.6 per cent per
year from 2020 to 2030 to keep temperatures from
exceeding 1.5°C.
In 2G Ethanol – Cellulases enzymes which were
made like biomimicking from ruminants help to
break down cellulose. The main advantages of
2G ethanol apart from meeting the additional
requirement of ethanol for blending in petrol is
that it would not be competing with food chain.
NRL2
in Assam has put up a plant to make 2G
Ethanol from Bamboo available in their local
regions as a source of cellulose.

10% 500 Cr Lit 2022 1G Ethanol
20% 1000 Cr Lit 2024 1G + 2G Ethanol
30% 1500 Cr Lit 2026 1G + 2G Ethanol
2. The 30% of energy requirement in the form of electricity is fulfilled by Lithium batteries in EV vehicles, Solar
plants / farms, windmills and all these stated are renewable, clean energies without CO2
generation. Nuclear
energy is also a clean energy, but the availability of fissionable Uranium U235
is limited and still there are lot of
safety concerns in the nuclear power plants. Solar power is highly diffusive in nature and to have a realisation,
one acre of solar power plant in a day will make a energy equivalent to 1 barrel of petrol and the calculations
are shown in below reference8
. Producing electrical power from solar is not a challenge. The cost of energy
storage is quite high and can quite easily increase the expenses of solar PV system substantially.
Diffuse nature of solar power8,9
3. Non biological way of converting solar power by mimicking artificial photosynthesis in to high
energy dense liquid fuels – a negative carbon neutral approach9.10
The above approach is still in the holy grail and first proposed, studied by Prof. Mathew Kanan, Department
of Chemistry, University of Stanford, USA. The solar / wind power is used for electrolysis of water to produce
oxygen at anode and protons at cathode. CO2
is captured from atmosphere by suitable technologies and
fed to cathode. The cathode is made up of oxide derived “Nano Gold” which preferentially reduces CO2
to
Carbon monoxide (CO). CO reacts with water to form Methanol / Ethanol
Approach
Conclusion: After climate change conference
at Glasgow in Oct-Nov 2021, each country is
fully aware of the necessity to maintain the
CO2
, carbon footprint emission with 1.5 ppm.
Concerted efforts are being made in all ways to
have carbon neutral and carbon negative fuels
in future. As stated in autobiography of Nelson
Mandela “Long walk to freedom”, towards energy
freedom, it appears to be an optimistic sign!

A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE!
Being a professional, it is my duty to enhance the HSE culture of the
organisation. For achieving this we need to adopt the best safety practices. As
a part of the HSE team, I try to implement initiatives to improve systems and
processes. I feel that Balmer Lawrie (BL) is such kind of an organisation where
no one will stop you if you are on a right path or your intention is good, and
you wish to develop and create something new in the organisation. We have a
strong HSE audit protocol to examine all Balmer Lawrie plants on the Health,
Safety and Environment parameters. After joining BL (i.e. 16th
January, 2020)
I was immediately inducted to carry out the HSE annual audit with my senior
Mr. Ashis Boral, Head [HSE & SD] which was one of my amazing and unique
experiences in the Company. After experiencing my first audit at BL, I realized
that our colleagues in the BL plants are very cooperative and are proactive in
maintaining the safety culture of their respective plants.

I am involved, in various HSE initiatives and I believe through continuous improvement we can enhance to
HSE culture in the organisation. I have learnt a lot through the Annual HSE audit report. The HSE Department
shares comments both good and bad with the objective of adding value to the businesses. Betterment of
safety practices is always our top priority. We prepare the report with sole aim of carrying out improvement.
Improvement can be done by the plants in the following manner:
• Elimination: physically remove the hazard
• Substitution: replace the hazard
• Engineering controls: isolate people from the hazard
• Administrative controls: change the way people work
• Personal protective equipment (PPE): protects the worker (LEAST TAKEN)
Training plays a very important role in furthering the HSE culture and I personally enjoy the training sessions that we
conduct on various topic across locations pan India. During the lockdown and peak of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-
21, significant number of webinar training sessions were organised. As a member of the HSE team, I ensure frequent
plant visits and communicate with ground level workers to find the root cause of any problem. Balmer Lawrie is a
unique organisation and I feel very proud to be part of this conglomerate that values every aspect of HSE.

processes, and people who have aligned to help the Company achieve its ideal state of performance.
Within HSE & Operational Excellence, we have implemented the group of diverse functions that provide
leadership and services supporting the health and safety of people, physical assets, the environment, our
communities, and our reputation. This is accomplished through the development and maintenance of effective
management systems designed to ensure compliance and continual performance improvement. Leadership
and accountability drive this effort at every level and is ultimately defines the culture of SBU: Chemicals. The
top three Excellence drivers adopted by the SBU for the successful operation is as below:
1. Senior Management support - The Top Management provides 100% support to us and every employee
believes in our commitment to health, safety and the environment. It starts at the top.
2. Early process owner involvement – When any new product or raw material comes to the plant, we
make sure our internal cross functional process owners (Plant Heads, employees and contractual service
employees) are aware of it. They are well trained and constant interaction happens in operational excellence
meeting. It is critically important to get everyone involved as soon as possible, so that we can capture
feedback and look for the new challenges from all angles.
3. Continuous improvements - An important HSE driver of continuous improvement for SBU:
Chemicals in 2021-22 was comprehensive improvement at sites following several high – profile
industry incidents. Key focus areas included Emergency Reponses readiness, waste effluent water
reduction, housekeeping in relation to emergency response, operating procedure, training records
and statutory compliances.
SBU: Chemicals is proud recipient of three National Awards for Manufacturing
Competitiveness and in 2021 has won the Gold Medal given by International

In CFS - Mumbai, we plan to develop an Occupational Health Centre
(OHC) and the same has been considered in capex for the year 2022-23.
We already have a qualified Doctor on board who visits our CFS on daily
basis. The OHC is planned to be equipped with basic amenities like bed,
stethoscope, BP monitor etc. The addition of OHC will largely benefit the
total workforce of around 300+ who are directly or indirectly employed
under CFS - Mumbai. In addition to the OHC, we have envisaged,
strengthening and repair of our existing structural and electrical facilities
to ensure proper health of the infrastructure. We also plan to develop a
standardised safety animation video which can be displayed at various
locations in our CFS.
In CFS - Kolkata, HSE is considered to be of paramount importance in
our day-to-day activities. We have incorporated many important steps to
improve the HSE culture within the Unit. Some of the important initiatives
like marking of PPE zones, pedestrian walking zone, construction of
secondary containment, displaying emergency evacuation plan, 24x7 IVR,
display of details of emergency team members are few to name. From
the operational perspective, one major and unique process that we have
implemented is, while delivery of loaded containers on the trailers, it has
been a practice to load the trailers from the backside. By implementing
this process, we have ensured that in case of any untoward incident, there
will be zero chance of any fatality. In case of front loading of the trailers
the drivers and helpers sitting in the cabin are exposed to tremendous
risk. We always thrive to improve our HSE culture through regular tool box
talk & suggestion scheme and try to implement any step, which in turn
will minimise the risk of accidents thus, improving our service delivery
and brand image.

At the outset we have upgraded our plant to ISO 45001 by implementing various
safety requirements. Substantial amount was spent in recent times to improve fire
safety of the plant. The existing hydrant line was extended by 200 meter and old
100 NB pipeline was replaced with 150 NB. The fire water tank storage capacity
has been enhanced from 150 KL to 300 KL. In addition to existing facilities, 8 nos.
of double Hydrant Valves, 5 nos. of Hose box with Branch Pipe, 4 nos. of Water
Monitor, 5 nos. of Hose reel drum were incorporated in the hydrant system. In
order to take care of oil fire 2 nos. of Foam Branch with Pickup tube and 200 litres
of AFFF 3% foam was procured. For ease of firefighting by securities personnel
beyond plant working hours, a motorised pump set of 2850 LMP in auto ON / OFF
mode was included with existing Diesel Engine pump. Other than these, fire alarm
system and CCTV system (70 nos. cameras) were installed to cover entire plant
and building.
We have divided the employees into six groups. Once a week, one member
of each group identifies and inspects hazards based on written operating
procedures, manufacturing process and comprehensive training. They
deliver report to HSE Coordinator of the division to address potential
risks. Through this program we encouraged an environment of open
communication to improve overall workflow. We also encourage and respect
everyone’s participation in safety initiatives. With collaboration and effort,
we developed a relationship with employees and established a consistent
flow of communication of overall safety. In this awareness practice, we
proactively prevent incidents and keep our employees safe and protected
on the job. Furthermore, every employee gets a chance to review the plant
safety and health related concerns. It makes employees more motivated
towards imbibing the safety culture.

Milind Prakash Barve, Container Freight Station – Navi Mumbai
Container Freight Stations (CFS) have been categorised as one of the
high-risk sectors and the main factors contributing to it are continuous
moving vehicles, overhead cranes, container-lifting machines, hazardous
substances, heavy machinery, over size cargos etc. The people working in
the CFS must be aware of these hazards, which they may be exposed to,
based on the job function or task being performed and that can be done
through effective communication.
Communication is the key to a healthy, safe and productive workplace. It
is needed to ensure roles and directions are understood, to warn against
Encouraging and incorporating feedback is the most critical safety element.
While the management is in charge of taking decisions in any given
organisation, a culture promoting workplace safety must be adopted to
encourage the employees to provide their feedback regarding the existing
safety measures. The employees are the individuals who are working on the
frontline and are at risk of getting injured. As a result, they are the most
knowledgeable ones to provide ample feedback about safety challenges
they face at work. However, taking the feedback is just the beginning of the
process. Evaluating it to determine feasibility and incorporating it into day
to day practices significantly improves workplace safety and hence, should
be adopted universally.

dangers, to avoid unsafe practices, to promote critical emergency response and particularly to learn about the
concerns and hazards that people may encounter. On the job communication helps to keep track of what’s
going on all around them. People often understand the safety information that accompanies the communication.
This communication can be both formal and informal, scheduled and routine, and in response to various
emergencies, incidents that have occurred, or in direct response to a risk. Communication is not just speaking
but also includes other means like safety message posters, labels, warnings, tool box talks, periodic training,
incident reporting etc. Communicating errors, mistakes and malfunctions is a significant step in maintaining a
safer workplace.
At any plant I visit, safety is typically among the first topics discussed, and
it’s always targeted towards what individual actions must be performed.
This includes which personal protective equipment (PPE) to wear and what
areas to avoid. However, the most critical safety element in workplace is
providing training and education of safety to the employees / workers. It is
undisputed that workers who are educated about their work environment
and on how to safely function in their respective roles, are more productive
and less likely to be injured during their work. There are variety of ways to
train employees:

Emergency can be of many kinds viz. fire, gas leak etc. These two are major emergencies that have to be
considered and addressed immediately on time. In BL, we are handling storage of hazardous gases like chlorine,
sulphur dioxide and ammonia considered as critical element. For safe handling of these gases and workplace
safety,weareparticularlyfocussingonconductingmockdrills,creatingawareness,onthejobtrainings,adequate
information and instructions, capturing near misses and corrective actions with continuous improvements. It’s
a matter of pride for me to work in the Safety Department.
1. Formalised company safety policies that are shared with all employees including contractual workers.
2. Training on Tools that are used by the employees in their routine work life.
3. Frequent safety training and updates on safety rules and regulations to all.
4. Consistent and proactive communication on health and safety topics.
5. Motivating the worker to communicate openly with management regarding the safety issues.
6. Acknowledging the participation of workers in all the safety programs.
Anil Sukhdeo Sargar, Cold Chain – Patalganga
Most critical element in Cold Chain – Patalganga is using ammonia carefully.
Ammonia is refrigeration coolant in vapour compression cycle. When ammonia
leaks in air, it displaces oxygen and causes rapid suffocation. This can cause
bronchiolar and alveolar edema, and airway destruction resulting in respiratory
distress or failure. Inhalation of lower concentrations can cause coughing,
and nose and throat irritation. It is toxic to aquatic life in case it mixes with
water bodies. Ammonia leads to fatality if inhaled with concentration above
5000 ppm. Ammonia causes irritation when it comes in contact with skin. It
is a flammable gas and can lead to a fire and explosion hazard, especially in
confined spaces.
Manoj Kumar S, Chemicals - Chennai
Health, Safety & Environment is one of the most vital departments of any
organisation or business in view of social, economic and moral reasons.
Safety management by facilitating all requirements in a proactive manner
is our key role. Working in Balmer Lawrie (BL) has provided a wider view in
terms of learnings, opportunities and scope for enhancing the workplace
best practices in all areas of health, safety and environment. Out of many
critical safety elements in workplace, Emergency Management is very
important. Acting on emergency is a very challenging part in having a holistic
view of safety response, control and decision making. In Manali region, we
are surrounded with many petrochemicals, refinery as well as chemical
industries. BL is one such organisation in this cluster and our efforts in
consultation and collaboration with all to mitigate any untoward harm in this
belt is continuous.

quickly at room temperature and a major spill poses a danger, not only because it is flammable, but also
because it is toxic to those who breathe it in. Below are some health hazards on humans who breathe in
anhydrous ammonia:
• Low levels (5 ppm): sharp odor is detectable.
• Moderate levels: irritation to the eyes and respiratory tract; may cause nausea as well as vomiting.
• High concentration levels (above 50ppm): possible ulcerations to the eyes and severe irritation to the
respiratory tract.
• Extremely high concentrations (300 to 500 ppm): potentially fatal; can cause fluid build-up in the lungs and
severe shortness of breath.
In our workplace the most critical safety element is guarding highly rotating
parts and keeping highly hazardous chemicals like paints, solvents, Epoxy
lacquer and paint sludges away from fire zones and ventilation. One more
critical safety element is identifying and addressing the hazards before they
can cause injury or illness. Our workmen participation with respect to safety
initiatives is very good and well appreciated. We thank the Top Management
for its commitment to establishing, maintaining and improving the safety
programs continually, and for providing necessary resources.
Kishore Kumar Cheepurupalli, Industrial Packaging – Vadodara
Shrikant Shinde, Cold Chain - Rai
Anhydrous ammonia is one of the most effective refrigerants, however, it is
also one of the most dangerous. Despite preventative measures and routine
maintenance efforts, refrigerant leaks can and do occur. At any given time,
thread sealants, Schrader caps, neoprene O-rings, or other parts of the
refrigeration equipment could wear and spring a leak, posing a huge risk to a
food and safety operator. Ammonia is a colourless gas with a very distinct and
familiar odour that becomes explosive when large quantities are released into
the atmosphere and ignited. This potentially lethal gas is compressed under
extreme pressure and when used in refrigerated systems is transformed into
a liquid state referred to as anhydrous ammonia. The clear fluid evaporates
Pressure Vessel is the most critical safety element at my workplace because it
is operated at pressure of 6-7 Kg/cm2
and up to a temperature of 190 deg. C.
It also reacts hazardous chemicals like Lithium Hydroxide. Any deviation from
SOP or mismanagement in safety protocol of charging or operating can lead
to a major accident. Thus, we are proactive in maintaining all safety protocols
while operating the Pressure Vessel.

Most critical element at any workplace is to identify and correct workplace
hazards. The practice known as HIRA i.e., Hazard Identification and Risk
Assessment. As there is always safety risk involved in the manufacturing
process, its identification and mitigation is the deciding factor to reduce the
incident to nil. On the basis of HIRA only, it is possible to reduce / eliminate
workplacesafetyhazardsandpotentialrisks.Further,safeworkingprocedures,
safety training and type of safety equipment or PPE kits are provided to shop
floor employees based on the risk involved in the process. Another element
which is important in workplace safety is ‘Near Miss’ identification and closure
on routine basis. It makes the workplace least prone to incident.
Naveen Kumar, Industrial Packaging – Asaoti
eyes, nose, throat, and respiratory tract and can result in blindness, lung damage and even death.
Ammonia gas has a familiar noxious odour which can be easily identified and can help to take immediate action.
The action that is necessary in case of ammonia leakage is as below:

Perhaps the most critical safety element in our workplace (CFS) is Hazard
Assessment and Correction. First, we need to identify the hazard and then we
implement correct process to avoid any unwanted incidents in our workplace.
Also, consistent audits are the easiest way to recognize hazards and then
implementing corrective actions ultimately prevent the worker from injuries
and their associated costs. Performing periodic inspection is the best way to
prevent surprise incidents. I have listed some of the critical safety elements
below, which have been implemented in our workplace (CFS).
• Weekly inspection of every MHE (Material Handling Equipment) like Sling
wire/D-Shackle/Hooks/Machineryisbeingcarriedoutinachecklistformat
to avoid any surprise incidents and identify the hazard in our workplace.
• Weekly servicing and check-up of Reach stacker / Forklift / Cranes and other heavy equipment handling
vehicles is done rigorously.
• Traffic personnel have been deputed on 24x7 basis inside our yard to safely navigate CFS inbound / outbound
heavy vehicles with all precautionary measures.
Since last 2 financial years our CFS is operating with “0” LTI and hopefully the same will be achieved in this FY also.
Balmer Lawrie is involved in many businesses and one of it is Cold chain.
Under SBU: Cold Chain comes many Temperature Controlled Warehouses
(TCW) which are located in different cities all over India. In such
warehouses, the facility maintains temperature in required range using
cooling and heating equipment. Depending on the season, the temperature
is maintained and controlled and can be altered as per the requirement.
The temperature in our inventory can range from +25 deg Celsius to -25
deg Celsius. Refrigeration system used in Balmer Lawrie’s TCWs is based
on ammonia refrigeration. As ammonia is a colourless poisonous gas it
becomes very critical to for us to keep it in check. Exposure to higher
concentration of ammonia in the air can cause immediate burning of the

• There should be a properly designed emergency plan which should be based on regulatory standards of the
Cold chain sector. A good plan will include these points:
• Security Department should be informed as soon as leak is detected.
• There should be quick evacuation of the site depending upon the severity of leak.
• Any source of ignition should be removed.
• In case of an casualty, first aid should be used and nearest hospital should be informed.
• Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) of Ammonia should be there so that it can be used in case of emergency.
• Conduct periodic training on the emergency plan.
• There should be adequate ventilation.
• Keep fire prevention and firefighting systems in perfect order.
• Carry out periodic maintenance of the electrical installations near the tanks.
• Use mechanisms for early detection of leakage at critical points, coupled to an alarm system.
With these steps we can keep ammonia leakage in check and can take preventive action in case of
emergency.
M R Mohanaranga, Cold Chain - Patalganga
The main critical safety element at Cold Chain - Patalganga is ammonia (NH3
).
Currently we are using the gas at the unit for refrigeration and the stock of
ammonia stored at plant is for two tanks. Unfortunately if the gas leaks, the
consequences are immediate and severe irritation of nose, and throat occurs.
Brief exposure to concentrations above 1500 ppm can cause pulmonary
edema, a potentially fatal accumulation of fluid in the lungs. We are following
precautionary measures like using water sprinklers, ammonia detectors and
oxygen cylinders.
Vinay Kumar, Industrial Packaging – Silvassa
Electrical Safety in Barrel manufacturing process is one of the most critical
safety elements. Electrical safety defines the safety of machines and as well
as operator. Electricity can be dynamic or static, the key factor for electrical
fire hazards are short circuits, open circuits, and electrostatic charges. Type-
2 relay coordination standards are adapted to ensure safety at workplace.
Double earthing of electrical apparatus and grounding of machineries are
ensured completely by proper maintenance of earth pits with resistance
below one ohm. FLP base electrical panels, motors and lightening systems
are incorporated in hazardous zones to prevent electrical fires. Earth Leakage
Circuit Breaker (ELCB) points are provided at every corner of production line
for portable equipment, and Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB) with all
lighting DBs.
Process safety is another vital safety element. The manufacturing processes are incorporated with safety
interlocks via development of new electrical circuits for safe operating procedures of machines and operators.
IP – Silvassa is more enthusiastic and stepping innovatively towards development of Electrical and Process
Safety by implementation of Human Body Static Dissipater at entry of hazardous zones, Modular type DCP
based fire extinguisher at Lacquer spray booth and development of hands-free Safety Interlock circuit at 80T
Fitting press. Team IP is privileged to play a role in achieving higher safety standards at workplace and in
upcoming days it will be the source of inspiration for Safety.

affect occupational health & safety. Consultation involves employers not only giving information to workers
but also listening to them and taking account of what they say before making decisions on safety and
health.
In our Greases & Lubricants Division, the other safety elements consist of the Safety Committee, Toolbox
talk, Hazard Identification, Safety accountability & Responsibility, Emergency response planning, Safety risk
assessment and mitigation. Collaboration with workers helps employers to manage safety and health in a
practical way by:
•	 helping them spot workplace risks;
•	 making sure safety and health controls are practical;
•	 increasing the level of commitment to working in a safe and healthy way;
• providing them with feedback on the effectiveness of their safety and health arrangements and control
measures.
I believe this has the greatest potential for improvement of health and safety as well as developing trust, respect
and promoting joint problem-solving.
Alva Manisha Barla, Greases & Lubricants – Kolkata
Safety is everyone’s responsibility. The main goal of health and
safety programs is to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses, and
fatality, as well as the suffering and financial hardship that these
events can cause for workers, their families and employers.
According to me, I believe that worker’s participation in
occupational health & safety management in our organisation is
the most critical safety element in the workplace. Workplaces
where workers are involved in taking decisions about safety and
health are safer and healthier. It is therefore vital that employers
consult workers and their representatives on all matters that

NURTURE YOUNG MINDS - DEVELOP SAFETY CULTURE”
Safety means protecting ourselves from any danger that may hurt
us or endanger our lives. Unsafe practice is a great peril to both life
and property. Accidents can take place anywhere and at any time but
most of the accidents are caused by carelessness and can be prevented.
Safety requires continuous education to bring awareness to the causes of
accidents.
Youth are the future of the country as well as any organisation. The youth
of today are the innovators, creators, future leaders of tomorrow. They are the brand ambassadors of any
organization. Youth have an important role to develop the safety culture. Nurturing young minds of the
workplace and therefore hoping and dreaming for the best safety culture is perhaps the most important
responsibility of every employer. We cannot prevent all accidents at the workplace but we can nurture young
minds to develop a safety culture. Without nurturing young minds it is quite difficult to establish a safety
culture.
Young workers are great employees; they are eager to learn. However, due to their inexperience and immaturity,
they are more prone to face accidents on the road, at their home or in the workplace. Hence, it is the responsibility
of the teachers, parents and employers to teach them how to prevent accidents.
Young workers might not speak up about safety concerns. It is the responsibility of every employer to pay proper
attention and give special training to the young workforce. The following activities may be undertaken by the
employers:

Point out potential dangers to the young on the job site and how they can stay safe

Show them how safety equipment and gear work and to make sure they know how to use the same and that
PPE fits properly

Train them on safety rules and work procedures. Ensure safety is a part of all orientation sessions

Keep talking about safety – make it part of everyday conversation
Employers must train workers in the position they will occupy before hand, monitor them to ensure compliance
with safe working practices, and provide refresher training on a regular basis. Training for young workers may
include information on the Company’s health and safety policy; workers’ personal rights and responsibilities;
potential hazards in the workplace; risk control measures; and where to go for advice and what to do if they
sense that conditions are unsafe.
In a nutshell, any unsafe practice can cause an accident which can destroy a young life and a lifetime of
career opportunities. Young workers should be given appropriate work and provided with adequate training
and supervision. Employers should promote a strong safety culture and involve young workers in safety
matters.

Culture is our way of life. It includes our values, beliefs, customs, languages
and traditions. Culture plays an essential role in the life of a person and
society. It acts as a means of accumulation, storage and transmission of
human experience. The culture of an organisation provides a context for
action which binds together for different components of an organisational

  • 2. Organisational Gazette 2 EDITORIAL Balmer Lawrie Organisational Gazette [BLOG] commenced its journey as a half yearly House Journal in October 2011 and then it was published as a quarterly house journal from 2012. Needless to mention, employee contributions have made BLOG a meaningful in-house communication platform. I thank all employees who have contributed to the house journal in the last decade. Typically, each issue of BLOG is based on a theme, covering a business or function, in order to highlight its noteworthy initiatives, achievements and the people behind them. This issue of BLOG focusses on Health, Safety and Environment (HSE). While you will get to explore the various facets of HSE in this issue, I will take this opportunity to remind all our colleagues working in plants and factories to always remember the following: • Secure yourself if working above 6 feet high. [Lifting equipment, pressure vessels, Relays etc.] • Do not excavate without permit and knowledge of buried hazards • Assess risk before any change in process, equipment, material or people • Task specific PPEs are must before performing work • Engine ON, Mobile OFF and buckle up before driving I would like to thank Mr. Ashis Boral, Head [HSE & SD] and Mr. Shibanta De, Deputy Manager [HSE] for all the support they have provided to publish this issue. I’m sure all of you will get interesting insights about the evolving role of HSE in our workplace and will enjoy reading the issue. • 7. Issue 38, April 2022 7 further taught us the significance of maintaining good safety and health practices. Safety is about people. Though we do audits and review facts and figures, I want a culture where every single employee has a workplace that is free from the risk of injuries and accidents, and most importantly he / she should feel safe. While Leadership accountability and a strong policy framework is needed to strengthen the HSE culture, a bottom-up approach is imperative. At Balmer Lawrie safety goals are well integrated in overall Business goals. We need to identify and promote young Executives / Officers who are evangelists of Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) and are proactively working towards fostering the HSE culture. Training and development is extremely important to keep employees abreast of latest HSE trends and best practices. Though the HSE Department has been conducting host of training programs covering various topics, we must develop internal pool of Executives who can conduct regular trainings locally across regions to ensure top of the mind recall of mandatories. There should be no lapse on regulatory compliances at any point in time. We should build a culture where all of us rely on everyone to look out for each other. Safety has to be everyone’s responsibility and I strongly encourage everyone to speak up if there’s an issue. It is important to walk the talk. Training should be conducted for everyone, no matter what their role is. Awareness is extremely important. I’m glad to see how our young employees are stepping up when it comes to safety. It makes a difference when people own things. We all know that a good safety culture leads to higher productivity, better quality of work, reduced costs and greater employee satisfaction. I will encourage all to look at our Company’s HSE and Sustainability policy. Integrating environment protection initiatives and occupational health & safety with all business processes to avoid harm to employees, contractors, visitors and the community has been our priority. However, our ultimate goal as an organisation should be to benchmark with leading global MNCs where ‘Vision Zero’ is the culture. Such organisations aim to achieve zero fatalities, zero injuries, zero accidents of any kind, zero process incidents and of course zero tolerance of unsafe behaviour and practices. In the financial year 2021-22 we have achieved Zero Loss Time Injury (LTI). Our HSE Department has conducted significant number of safety trainings, mock drills in our factories and offices pan India. In our plants, all employees (by rotation) are given the responsibility for safety inspection. Regular awareness workshops on behaviour-based safety, tool box talks and training sessions on various safety topics are conducted. However, as we are into businesses that involve hazardous processes, being watchful at every juncture is important. It has been a practice to celebrate excellence in Safety at Balmer Lawrie. I congratulate all the winners of the safety audit this year and encourage all units to constantly strive for HSE excellence. In the new Reward and Recognition policy, HSE elements are factored in for evaluation of various awards. We have embraced sustainability and to successfully achieve our future goals, we have made HSE a way of life at Balmer Lawrie. We stand committed to all our stakeholders! LEADERSHIP SPEAKS Adika Ratna Sekhar Chairman & Managing Director I would like to begin my message with a very famous quote of Benjamin Franklin - “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” When we talk about workplace Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), one of the key elements of best practices is prevention. You would agree with me that continuous small preventive steps taken proactively can thwart safety incidents of epic proportions. Compliance, discipline, accountability, common sense and awareness are other factors that help to create a robust HSE culture in the organisation. When an incident occurs, what we see is just the tip of the iceberg; a larger problem lies below the surface. We cannot afford to be peripheral and shallow in our approach to HSE in the workplace. I am happy that this issue of Balmer Lawrie Organisational Gazette [BLOG] is a special issue highlighting the importance of health, safety and environment for an organisation. We all know that if the workplace is safe and healthy, all of us share the benefits. The COVID-19 pandemic
  • 8. Organisational Gazette 8 for continuously reinforcing the safety culture in the organisation. Our robust Health, Safety and Environment [HSE] Management System has an integrated approach, where all the 3 HSE factors are effectively managed to reduce risks in the workplace. The Dos and Don’ts emerging from the HSE policy are periodically reiterated in relevant forums to nurture Behaviour Based Safety. We must understand that the onus lies on each one of us to create and sustain a safe workplace. For our Service Businesses’ customers, it’s ‘safety first’ always! Thus, we should leave no stone unturned in safe handling of customer products be it in the Cold Chain Units or Container Freight Stations, in securing last mile delivery of EXIM consignments handled by Logistics Services, and in ensuring safety of our customers availing Travel & Vacations services. I would like to draw the attention of my colleagues in SBU: Logistics Infrastructure to the incidents we have witnessed in the past. As a team, we should constantly strive to achieve zero fatalities, by complying with all the facets of HSE holistically. We must encourage communication, consultation and collaboration with all stakeholders and local communities on our operations, likely hazards and emergency response system to mitigate the harmful impacts of product life cycle and supply chain. I will urge all of you to ensure strict compliance of some basic things like constitution of safety committee, electrical and mechanical safety checklist, fire safety, high visibility of PPE and signages, updated HSE communication collaterals especially audio visual content, safe handling of material and containers by reach stackers and forklifts, safe handling of ammonia in cold chain units etc. Balmer Lawrie is a leading integrated Logistics solutions provider and is aggressively enhancing its foothold in the Cold Chain business with its four state-of-the-art temperature controlled cold chain units and owned fleet of temperature controlled vehicles. We have been catering to various industry segments and safe storage and handling of products like Food, Pharma, Dairy etc. is of utmost priority. The quality of the products at any point in time must be preserved. We should ensure high levels of hygiene. Ammonia (refrigerant) leaks and spills in these units can be disastrous. Periodic review of our emergency response plans and mitigation strategies will help. With the recent growth of adoption of the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) integration approach by various organisations both in the country and globally, the role of HSE professionals assume great significance. I believe the HSE Department will be able to add maximum value to Businesses only when they work together towards incorporating all facets of ESG in systems and processes. We should look at well-defined goals for meeting larger objectives like reducing carbon footprint, adopting greener technologies and finally achieving the mandated net zero targets. ESG focussed Logistics companies are developing eco-friendly logistics solutions based on digital transformation, aggressively reducing industrial waste and carbon emissions, strengthening ESG support to customers and the society and building supply chain ESG management capabilities. To boost ESG performance, many travel and tourism companies are giving the option to travellers of picking a service or product that is more environmentally friendly. This trend has taken off in online travel. In 2021 alone, Google Flights allowed users to see carbon emission estimates for nearly all flights in its search results. The estimate is visible next to the price and duration of the flight. Shortly after, Booking.com announced the launch of its Travel Sustainable badge, a globally sustainability measure that aims to provide information to travellers looking to make more sustainable travel choices. Adhip Nath Palchaudhuri Director [Service Businesses] Accidents in the industry have been a concern for years together. Various reports estimate shocking numbers of people succumbing to work related accidents. According to Geneva-based IndustriALL Global Union, which represents more than 50 million workers in 140 countries in the mining, energy and manufacturing sectors, more than 162 workers died in industrial accidents in India in 2021 highlighting the soaring cases of accidents in industrial and commercial establishments in recent years. It also underscored that an average of seven accidents reported per month in 2021 also resulted in permanent disabilities and severe injuries. As per IndustriALL, the deployment of large numbers of contract and untrained workers in precarious jobs; poor safety inspection systems; weak implementation of safety protocols and safety awareness; inadequate risk assessment and response; negligence, and the breakdown of emergency response procedures have exacerbated the impact of the accidents. Balmer Lawrie is a caring organisation and immensely values the need
  • 9. Issue 38, April 2022 9 Adhering to the ESG framework would mean future-proofing our businesses. Let’s get it right that those companies who care would eventually win. If we are surging ahead to join the league of winners, then think Sustainability, think ESG! I feel very privileged to oversee the Information Technology function in the Company, besides Finance and my role as CFO, and that’s particularly because I am constantly nudged to keep myself updated on new technology trends in our various Businesses and Functions. New age technology trends have been gamechangers in revitalizing various Businesses. Businesses and Functions are forced to keep pace with technological advancements for competitive advantage. As this issue of Balmer Lawrie Organisational Gazette focuses on Health, Safety and Environment [HSE], I will try to throw some light on how we can enhance HSE compliance and best practices using technology. Deborah Hersman, former president and CEO of the National Safety Council said, “Technology is moving at a much faster clip than our laws can keep up with.” With Balmer Lawrie being present in both Manufacturing and Services Businesses, HSE goals are varied and all elements need equal attention when driving overall systems and processes excellence. Traditionally, the HSE Management System (HMS) captures data from a large Sandip Das Director [Finance] number of systems such as HSE observations, Near-miss reports, Incident reports, HSE inspections and HSE audits. However, data from these reports is generally unstructured and not adequately analysed to identify emerging high-risk areas. We have to look at technology options that can help us manage this data effectively. We are transitioning from traditional paper based HSE processes and systems to digitised HSE data capture systems. We have a long way to go! Progressive organisations are using leading edge digital HSE systems which apply predictive analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Separate tools and systems for managing HSE issues have evolved over the years, but now these are being integrated into the business in a structured way to provide organisations with the assurance that critical HSE risks are recorded and managed effectively. HSE data is ever growing, especially in high-risk businesses for eg. Chemicals etc. We are required to stringently adhere to legal compliances; stakeholder expectations are high. We have also seen that even a single HSE incident can disrupt business operations or even damage corporate reputation. It is observed that 50% to 80% of accidents are driven by or related to humans. Thus, widespread CCTV cameras are generally installed at production sites, plants and remote sites to monitor workmen. However, there are gaps in identifying each and every HSE violation and take instant corrective actions. In days to come video analytics techniques can be used to identify unsafe acts, unsafe conditions and non-compliances with the mandatory Personal Protect Equipment (PPE) requirements. Drones and robotics need to be leveraged for surveillance in our Container Freight Stations and Temperature Controlled Warehouses. Gas leaks through pipelines and plant vent systems can cause serious damage to the environment. These can also potentially expose companies to environmental penalties. Image processing using specialized cameras, drones and satellite can potentially identify the leaks from invisible sources and can help in preventing gas leaks. New dashboard technologies can help identify, investigate, and communicate key insights to help decision-making and awareness-building efforts. Adding advanced analytics to the mix creates a powerful tool to identify emerging risks and patterns. As an organisation we should continuously evaluate safety management software that empowers HSE teams to make the right decisions. HSE Managers need to focus their HSE efforts in the right place, reducing incident rates and ensuring critical HSE risks are recorded and managed effectively. Effective HSE management is more crucial than ever. We just cannot afford to ignore technology advancements in this area. A famous writer said, “Once a new technology rolls over you, if you’re not part of the steamroller, you’re part of the road.” Best wishes to the HSE team!
  • 10. Organisational Gazette 10 and adopting the new technologies are very much essential for sustainability. In the Industrial Packaging business, we are a role model only because of technological advantages. Year on year it is being upgraded. Recent development called staggered blanking is a good example for this topic “adoption of new technologies with enhanced green manufacturing and sustainability”. Series reaction in the Chemicals business in another live example. Improved efficiencies, minimised wastages and implemented technologies have helped to keep the business way above our competitors. Our entry into finishing chemical technology has opened other avenues like textile and agro chemicals. We have clearly understood the importance of adoption of new technology. It’s time to gear up our research and development activities to keep the track problem free, to move ahead of competition and the most important thing to keep our planet green. HEAR FROM BUSINESS LEADERS! R M Uthayaraja Executive Director [IndustrialPackaging&Chemicals] How do you think adoption of new technology with enhance green manufacturing and sustainability in business? There are two important parameters for a successful business. One is quality and another is technology. Quality is like a hall ticket for writing an exam; without quality we cannot enter any business. Let us discuss about technology. Although it’s not a panacea, technology has the power to increase productivity, efficiency and cost savings, reduce product waste, analyse and track progress, all of which can help minimise the impact on the environment. Today, the major issue is global warming. All manufacturing companies are responsible and there is a need to upgrade the existing technologies to improve the efficiencies and to reduce the wastages. In the process of Manufacturing, technology plays a major role to keep not only the cost of production low but also to stop damaging the environment. Across the world, technology is emerging as key driver of socio-economic transformation. India is not only among the emerging economies of the world but there is also a considerable appetite for technology innovation here. There is a determination to leverage technology for development and growth. Developing Tell us about the HSE global trends in the Logistics Infrastructure business and Balmer Lawrie’s initiatives in this area. When it comes to supply chains, there is no downtime. Various activities carried out in various locations at a single point of time can often lead to risk related to safety and health. With the shift in people-oriented businesses and technologically backed processes, safety in the logistics sector is taking a turn for good. Global trend is more focused on ensuring that people are the number one priority. Many initiatives like offering continuous safety trainings, promoting cross function communication and providing the necessary tools and resources to the workforce, are steps in the right direction.  Technology is also playing a major role in logistics with direct updates to the end Customer, right from the production unit till the cargo reaches to the doorstep. Automation of routine activities has heavily cut down on the turnaround time also minimising the risks involved in the operations. Some of the few trends that are being implemented to increased safety in logistics are as follows: Romon Sebastian Louis COO[LogisticsInfrastructure] • Infrastructure companies are leveraging the assets and planning for energy needs for future. • Organisations have been increasing the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and software processes to decrease manpower wherever possible so that the jobs can be automated. • AI can automate repetitive tasks and therefore remove employees from potential risks and injuries occurring in hazardous environments. It has also been reported that up to 80% of accidents that occur in the workplace are human-related. • Withtechnology,AIremote-monitoringsolutioncanbeadaptedforamultitudeofindustriesandenvironments, using a variety of IoT (Internet of Things) enabled devices.
  • 11. • 18. Organisational Gazette 18 Carbon footprint reduction measures with special reference to second generation ‘2G’ ethanol and biomimicking photosynthesis to make carbon neutral liquid fuels A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our actions. A greenhouse gas (GHG) is a gas that absorbs and emits radiant energy within the thermal infrared range, causing the greenhouse effect. The primary greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere are water vapor (H2 O), carbon dioxide (CO2 ), methane (CH4 ), nitrous oxide (N2 O), fluorinated gases like sulfur hexafluoride, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and ozone (O3 ). Water vapor: Water vapor is the most potent of the greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere, and the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere cannot, in general, be directly modified by human behaviour—it’s set by air temperatures. V. Vijayabaskar PDC, Chemicals - Chennai Carbon dioxide: Of the greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (CO2 ) is the most prominent. Sources of atmospheric CO2 include volcanoes, the combustion and decay of organic matter, respiration by aerobic (oxygen-using) organisms, and the burning of fossil fuels, clearing of land, and production of cement by humans. These sources are balanced, on average, by a set of physical, chemical, or biological processes, called "sinks," that tend to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Plant life, which takes up CO2  during the process of photosynthesis, is an important natural sink. In the oceans, marine life can absorb dissolved CO2 , and some marine organisms even use CO2 to build skeletons and other structures made of calcium carbonate (CaCO3 ). Other Green House Gases: Methane, Nitrous oxides and Surface level ozone distinguished from naturally occurring stratospheric O3 exists in far lower concentrations in the atmosphere. Major carbon footprint: The energy requirement for human related activities of 70% is in the form of ‘Heat’ and the remaining 30% is in the form of electricity. The above heat requirement is fulfilled by burning “the energy dense fossil fuel1 ” which on complete combustion results in the generation of CO2. The concentration of carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere is currently at nearly 412 parts per million (ppm) and rising. This represents a 47 percent increase since the beginning of the Industrial Age, when the concentration was near 280 ppm, and a 11 percent increase since 2000, when it was near 370 ppm. India’s share in CO2 emissions is 7% of world close to 2.45 Gigatons Any hot object above absolute zero will emit heat as infra-red (IR) radiation. CO2 gas is IR active and when energy from the sun reaches the top of our atmosphere, most of it passes through to Earth’s surface, where it is
  • 19. Issue 38, April 2022 19 Mitigating measures taken to reduce CO2 1. Blending of petrol with first generation (1G) and second generation (2G) ethanol. This is based on the approach where in the amount of CO2 generated equivalent to Ethanol burnt will be offsetted by the plant / crop residue used in making ethanol and they acted as “natural sink” utilizing CO2 for photosynthesis. Ethanol obtained from biomass is blended partially with gasoline as its calorific value is close to 63% with gasoline. Ethanol produced by fermentation of sugars are classified as i. 1G ethanol – starch and sugars Sources - Starch found in feedstocks such as cereals (wheat, barley, corn and sorghum) and sugarcane. Their cultivation is competing with the food chain. ii. 2G ethanol –Cellulose, hemicellulose & lignin; Sources - crop residues like wheat straw, corn stover, wood, agricultural residues Schemes for 1G & 2G Ethanol: absorbed. Some of this energy is re-emitted, heading back towards space. At this stage, it interacts with molecules of CO2  in a way that prevents some of it from escaping Earth's atmosphere. The trapped heat energy leads to increased average global surface air temperatures. In COP26 at Glasgow, Ministers from all over the world has agreed to cut down emission by 7.6 per cent per year from 2020 to 2030 to keep temperatures from exceeding 1.5°C. In 2G Ethanol – Cellulases enzymes which were made like biomimicking from ruminants help to break down cellulose. The main advantages of 2G ethanol apart from meeting the additional requirement of ethanol for blending in petrol is that it would not be competing with food chain. NRL2 in Assam has put up a plant to make 2G Ethanol from Bamboo available in their local regions as a source of cellulose. The success of this business involves the proper integration of Upstream – Feedstocks, Biorefineries and Downstream – Oil companies giants as shown below Upstream Bio refineries 3-7 Down stream New startups – Enzymes Value Chain involved and their challenges
  • 20. Organisational Gazette 20 India’s Target: As a measure to reduce CO2 emission and import dependency of fossil fuel % Blending of Ethanol with Petrol Quantities Required Timelines Source 10% 500 Cr Lit 2022 1G Ethanol 20% 1000 Cr Lit 2024 1G + 2G Ethanol 30% 1500 Cr Lit 2026 1G + 2G Ethanol 2. The 30% of energy requirement in the form of electricity is fulfilled by Lithium batteries in EV vehicles, Solar plants / farms, windmills and all these stated are renewable, clean energies without CO2 generation. Nuclear energy is also a clean energy, but the availability of fissionable Uranium U235 is limited and still there are lot of safety concerns in the nuclear power plants. Solar power is highly diffusive in nature and to have a realisation, one acre of solar power plant in a day will make a energy equivalent to 1 barrel of petrol and the calculations are shown in below reference8 . Producing electrical power from solar is not a challenge. The cost of energy storage is quite high and can quite easily increase the expenses of solar PV system substantially. Diffuse nature of solar power8,9 3. Non biological way of converting solar power by mimicking artificial photosynthesis in to high energy dense liquid fuels – a negative carbon neutral approach9.10 The above approach is still in the holy grail and first proposed, studied by Prof. Mathew Kanan, Department of Chemistry, University of Stanford, USA. The solar / wind power is used for electrolysis of water to produce oxygen at anode and protons at cathode. CO2 is captured from atmosphere by suitable technologies and fed to cathode. The cathode is made up of oxide derived “Nano Gold” which preferentially reduces CO2 to Carbon monoxide (CO). CO reacts with water to form Methanol / Ethanol Approach Conclusion: After climate change conference at Glasgow in Oct-Nov 2021, each country is fully aware of the necessity to maintain the CO2 , carbon footprint emission with 1.5 ppm. Concerted efforts are being made in all ways to have carbon neutral and carbon negative fuels in future. As stated in autobiography of Nelson Mandela “Long walk to freedom”, towards energy freedom, it appears to be an optimistic sign!

As a part of the HSE team, I try to implement initiatives to improve systems and processes. I feel that Balmer Lawrie (BL) is such kind of an organisation where no one will stop you if you are on a right path or your intention is good, and you wish to develop and create something new in the organisation. We have a strong HSE audit protocol to examine all Balmer Lawrie plants on the Health, Safety and Environment parameters. After joining BL (i.e. 16th January, 2020) I was immediately inducted to carry out the HSE annual audit with my senior Mr. Ashis Boral, Head [HSE & SD] which was one of my amazing and unique experiences in the Company. After experiencing my first audit at BL, I realized that our colleagues in the BL plants are very cooperative and are proactive in maintaining the safety culture of their respective plants. Shibanta De HSE Department Corporate Office - Kolkata I am involved, in various HSE initiatives and I believe through continuous improvement we can enhance to HSE culture in the organisation. I have learnt a lot through the Annual HSE audit report. The HSE Department shares comments both good and bad with the objective of adding value to the businesses. Betterment of safety practices is always our top priority. We prepare the report with sole aim of carrying out improvement. Improvement can be done by the plants in the following manner: • Elimination: physically remove the hazard • Substitution: replace the hazard • Engineering controls: isolate people from the hazard • Administrative controls: change the way people work • Personal protective equipment (PPE): protects the worker (LEAST TAKEN) Training plays a very important role in furthering the HSE culture and I personally enjoy the training sessions that we conduct on various topic across locations pan India. • 25. Issue 38, April 2022 25 In CFS - Mumbai, we plan to develop an Occupational Health Centre (OHC) and the same has been considered in capex for the year 2022-23. We already have a qualified Doctor on board who visits our CFS on daily basis. The OHC is planned to be equipped with basic amenities like bed, stethoscope, BP monitor etc. The addition of OHC will largely benefit the total workforce of around 300+ who are directly or indirectly employed under CFS - Mumbai. In addition to the OHC, we have envisaged, strengthening and repair of our existing structural and electrical facilities to ensure proper health of the infrastructure. We also plan to develop a standardised safety animation video which can be displayed at various locations in our CFS. In CFS - Kolkata, HSE is considered to be of paramount importance in our day-to-day activities. We have incorporated many important steps to improve the HSE culture within the Unit. Some of the important initiatives like marking of PPE zones, pedestrian walking zone, construction of secondary containment, displaying emergency evacuation plan, 24x7 IVR, display of details of emergency team members are few to name. From the operational perspective, one major and unique process that we have implemented is, while delivery of loaded containers on the trailers, it has been a practice to load the trailers from the backside. By implementing this process, we have ensured that in case of any untoward incident, there will be zero chance of any fatality. In case of front loading of the trailers the drivers and helpers sitting in the cabin are exposed to tremendous risk. We always thrive to improve our HSE culture through regular tool box talk & suggestion scheme and try to implement any step, which in turn will minimise the risk of accidents thus, improving our service delivery and brand image. • 28. Organisational Gazette 28 HSE & GEN NEXT Milind Prakash Barve, Container Freight Station – Navi Mumbai Container Freight Stations (CFS) have been categorised as one of the high-risk sectors and the main factors contributing to it are continuous moving vehicles, overhead cranes, container-lifting machines, hazardous substances, heavy machinery, over size cargos etc. The people working in the CFS must be aware of these hazards, which they may be exposed to, based on the job function or task being performed and that can be done through effective communication. Communication is the key to a healthy, safe and productive workplace. It is needed to ensure roles and directions are understood, to warn against Encouraging and incorporating feedback is the most critical safety element. While the management is in charge of taking decisions in any given organisation, a culture promoting workplace safety must be adopted to encourage the employees to provide their feedback regarding the existing safety measures. The employees are the individuals who are working on the frontline and are at risk of getting injured. As a result, they are the most knowledgeable ones to provide ample feedback about safety challenges they face at work. However, taking the feedback is just the beginning of the process. Evaluating it to determine feasibility and incorporating it into day to day practices significantly improves workplace safety and hence, should be adopted universally. Dinesh Madhukar Ingle, Container Freight Station – Navi Mumbai dangers, to avoid unsafe practices, to promote critical emergency response and particularly to learn about the concerns and hazards that people may encounter. On the job communication helps to keep track of what’s going on all around them. People often understand the safety information that accompanies the communication. This communication can be both formal and informal, scheduled and routine, and in response to various emergencies, incidents that have occurred, or in direct response to a risk. Communication is not just speaking but also includes other means like safety message posters, labels, warnings, tool box talks, periodic training, incident reporting etc. Communicating errors, mistakes and malfunctions is a significant step in maintaining a safer workplace. At any plant I visit, safety is typically among the first topics discussed, and it’s always targeted towards what individual actions must be performed. This includes which personal protective equipment (PPE) to wear and what areas to avoid. However, the most critical safety element in workplace is providing training and education of safety to the employees / workers. It is undisputed that workers who are educated about their work environment and on how to safely function in their respective roles, are more productive and less likely to be injured during their work. • 29. Issue 38, April 2022 29 Emergency can be of many kinds viz. fire, gas leak etc. These two are major emergencies that have to be considered and addressed immediately on time. In BL, we are handling storage of hazardous gases like chlorine, sulphur dioxide and ammonia considered as critical element. For safe handling of these gases and workplace safety, weareparticularlyfocussingonconductingmockdrills, creatingawareness, onthejobtrainings, adequate information and instructions, capturing near misses and corrective actions with continuous improvements. It’s a matter of pride for me to work in the Safety Department. Anil Sukhdeo Sargar, Cold Chain – Patalganga Most critical element in Cold Chain – Patalganga is using ammonia carefully. Ammonia is refrigeration coolant in vapour compression cycle. When ammonia leaks in air, it displaces oxygen and causes rapid suffocation. This can cause bronchiolar and alveolar edema, and airway destruction resulting in respiratory distress or failure. Inhalation of lower concentrations can cause coughing, and nose and throat irritation. It is toxic to aquatic life in case it mixes with water bodies. Ammonia leads to fatality if inhaled with concentration above 5000 ppm. Ammonia causes irritation when it comes in contact with skin. It is a flammable gas and can lead to a fire and explosion hazard, especially in confined spaces. Manoj Kumar S, Chemicals - Chennai Health, Safety & Environment is one of the most vital departments of any organisation or business in view of social, economic and moral reasons. Safety management by facilitating all requirements in a proactive manner is our key role. Working in Balmer Lawrie (BL) has provided a wider view in terms of learnings, opportunities and scope for enhancing the workplace best practices in all areas of health, safety and environment. Out of many critical safety elements in workplace, Emergency Management is very important. Acting on emergency is a very challenging part in having a holistic view of safety response, control and decision making. In Manali region, we are surrounded with many petrochemicals, refinery as well as chemical industries. BL is one such organisation in this cluster and our efforts in consultation and collaboration with all to mitigate any untoward harm in this belt is continuous.
  • 30. Organisational Gazette 30 quickly at room temperature and a major spill poses a danger, not only because it is flammable, but also because it is toxic to those who breathe it in. Below are some health hazards on humans who breathe in anhydrous ammonia: • Low levels (5 ppm): sharp odor is detectable. • Moderate levels: irritation to the eyes and respiratory tract; may cause nausea as well as vomiting. • High concentration levels (above 50ppm): possible ulcerations to the eyes and severe irritation to the respiratory tract. • Extremely high concentrations (300 to 500 ppm): potentially fatal; can cause fluid build-up in the lungs and severe shortness of breath. In our workplace the most critical safety element is guarding highly rotating parts and keeping highly hazardous chemicals like paints, solvents, Epoxy lacquer and paint sludges away from fire zones and ventilation. One more critical safety element is identifying and addressing the hazards before they can cause injury or illness. Our workmen participation with respect to safety initiatives is very good and well appreciated. We thank the Top Management for its commitment to establishing, maintaining and improving the safety programs continually, and for providing necessary resources. Kishore Kumar Cheepurupalli, Industrial Packaging – Vadodara Shrikant Shinde, Cold Chain - Rai Anhydrous ammonia is one of the most effective refrigerants, however, it is also one of the most dangerous. Despite preventative measures and routine maintenance efforts, refrigerant leaks can and do occur. At any given time, thread sealants, Schrader caps, neoprene O-rings, or other parts of the refrigeration equipment could wear and spring a leak, posing a huge risk to a food and safety operator. Ammonia is a colourless gas with a very distinct and familiar odour that becomes explosive when large quantities are released into the atmosphere and ignited. This potentially lethal gas is compressed under extreme pressure and when used in refrigerated systems is transformed into a liquid state referred to as anhydrous ammonia. The clear fluid evaporates Pressure Vessel is the most critical safety element at my workplace because it is operated at pressure of 6-7 Kg/cm2 and up to a temperature of 190 deg. C. It also reacts hazardous chemicals like Lithium Hydroxide. Any deviation from SOP or mismanagement in safety protocol of charging or operating can lead to a major accident. Thus, we are proactive in maintaining all safety protocols while operating the Pressure Vessel. Roshan Anand, Greases & Lubricants – Silvassa
  • 31. Issue 38, April 2022 31 Most critical element at any workplace is to identify and correct workplace hazards. The practice known as HIRA i.e., Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment. Ammonia gas has a familiar noxious odour which can be easily identified and can help to take immediate action. The action that is necessary in case of ammonia leakage is as below: Surajeet Boral, Container Freight Station - Kolkata Perhaps the most critical safety element in our workplace (CFS) is Hazard Assessment and Correction. First, we need to identify the hazard and then we implement correct process to avoid any unwanted incidents in our workplace. Also, consistent audits are the easiest way to recognize hazards and then implementing corrective actions ultimately prevent the worker from injuries and their associated costs. Performing periodic inspection is the best way to prevent surprise incidents. I have listed some of the critical safety elements below, which have been implemented in our workplace (CFS). • Weekly inspection of every MHE (Material Handling Equipment) like Sling wire/D-Shackle/Hooks/Machineryisbeingcarriedoutinachecklistformat to avoid any surprise incidents and identify the hazard in our workplace. • Weekly servicing and check-up of Reach stacker / Forklift / Cranes and other heavy equipment handling vehicles is done rigorously. • Traffic personnel have been deputed on 24x7 basis inside our yard to safely navigate CFS inbound / outbound heavy vehicles with all precautionary measures. Since last 2 financial years our CFS is operating with “0” LTI and hopefully the same will be achieved in this FY also. Balmer Lawrie is involved in many businesses and one of it is Cold chain. Under SBU: Cold Chain comes many Temperature Controlled Warehouses (TCW) which are located in different cities all over India. In such warehouses, the facility maintains temperature in required range using cooling and heating equipment. Depending on the season, the temperature is maintained and controlled and can be altered as per the requirement. The temperature in our inventory can range from +25 deg Celsius to -25 deg Celsius. Refrigeration system used in Balmer Lawrie’s TCWs is based on ammonia refrigeration. As ammonia is a colourless poisonous gas it becomes very critical to for us to keep it in check. • 32. Organisational Gazette 32 • There should be a properly designed emergency plan which should be based on regulatory standards of the Cold chain sector. A good plan will include these points: • Security Department should be informed as soon as leak is detected. With these steps we can keep ammonia leakage in check and can take preventive action in case of emergency. M R Mohanaranga, Cold Chain - Patalganga The main critical safety element at Cold Chain - Patalganga is ammonia (NH3 ). Currently we are using the gas at the unit for refrigeration and the stock of ammonia stored at plant is for two tanks. Unfortunately if the gas leaks, the consequences are immediate and severe irritation of nose, and throat occurs. Brief exposure to concentrations above 1500 ppm can cause pulmonary edema, a potentially fatal accumulation of fluid in the lungs. We are following precautionary measures like using water sprinklers, ammonia detectors and oxygen cylinders. Vinay Kumar, Industrial Packaging – Silvassa Electrical Safety in Barrel manufacturing process is one of the most critical safety elements. Electrical safety defines the safety of machines and as well as operator. Electricity can be dynamic or static, the key factor for electrical fire hazards are short circuits, open circuits, and electrostatic charges. Type- 2 relay coordination standards are adapted to ensure safety at workplace. Double earthing of electrical apparatus and grounding of machineries are ensured completely by proper maintenance of earth pits with resistance below one ohm. FLP base electrical panels, motors and lightening systems are incorporated in hazardous zones to prevent electrical fires. Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) points are provided at every corner of production line for portable equipment, and Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB) with all lighting DBs. Process safety is another vital safety element. The manufacturing processes are incorporated with safety interlocks via development of new electrical circuits for safe operating procedures of machines and operators. IP – Silvassa is more enthusiastic and stepping innovatively towards development of Electrical and Process Safety by implementation of Human Body Static Dissipater at entry of hazardous zones, Modular type DCP based fire extinguisher at Lacquer spray booth and development of hands-free Safety Interlock circuit at 80T Fitting press. In this column, we are featuring the winning entries in Essay and Slogan competitions and the names of all the winners. First - Ms. Indrani Mukherjee Corporate HR Department - Kolkata NURTURE YOUNG MINDS - DEVELOP SAFETY CULTURE” Safety means protecting ourselves from any danger that may hurt us or endanger our lives. Unsafe practice is a great peril to both life and property. Accidents can take place anywhere and at any time but most of the accidents are caused by carelessness and can be prevented. Safety requires continuous education to bring awareness to the causes of accidents. Youth are the future of the country as well as any organisation. The youth of today are the innovators, creators, future leaders of tomorrow. They are the brand ambassadors of any organization. Youth have an important role to develop the safety culture. Nurturing young minds of the workplace and therefore hoping and dreaming for the best safety culture is perhaps the most important responsibility of every employer. We cannot prevent all accidents at the workplace but we can nurture young minds to develop a safety culture. Without nurturing young minds it is quite difficult to establish a safety culture. Young workers are great employees; they are eager to learn. However, due to their inexperience and immaturity, they are more prone to face accidents on the road, at their home or in the workplace. Hence, it is the responsibility of the teachers, parents and employers to teach them how to prevent accidents. Young workers might not speak up about safety concerns. It is the responsibility of every employer to pay proper attention and give special training to the young workforce. The following activities may be undertaken by the employers:  Point out potential dangers to the young on the job site and how they can stay safe  Show them how safety equipment and gear work and to make sure they know how to use the same and that PPE fits properly  Train them on safety rules and work procedures. Ensure safety is a part of all orientation sessions  Keep talking about safety – make it part of everyday conversation Employers must train workers in the position they will occupy before hand, monitor them to ensure compliance with safe working practices, and provide refresher training on a regular basis. Training for young workers may include information on the Company’s health and safety policy; workers’ personal rights and responsibilities; potential hazards in the workplace; risk control measures; and where to go for advice and what to do if they sense that conditions are unsafe. In a nutshell, any unsafe practice can cause an accident which can destroy a young life and a lifetime of career opportunities.
