Meaning  Persuasive speaking is the art of using words and body language to influence an audience  It requires the ability to appeal to the emotions and the thinking of the listeners  To help and guide them to accept the idea, attitude or action that is being proposed to the speaker  It is achieved by using arguments, rationalization, presenting supporting information and usually emotionally appealing language  Persuasive speaking is different from informative speaking although they have an overlapping elements  Persuasive speaking------------  asks the audience to choose from among options  Informative speaking states and clarifies options
  3. 3.  Aims to win the audience’s agreement and commitment while informative speaking aims to give information  Uses emotional tone and appeals and informative speaking does not  Persuasion means making efforts to change or influence the attitudes and behavior of others  It is achieved by skilful appeal to reason and emotions  It is the skill of using the best arguments to win over and convince others  It requires the ability to use symbols of communication in an effective manner  The persuasive speaker should be able to use words both spoken and written, as well as non verbal methods is such a way as to have the most influential effect on the target audience

Organizing a persuasive speech  The general principles if organization are  The introduction should get the audience’s attention  State the proposal clearly and give a preview of what you will cover in the speech  After each main point, there should be internal summary  There must be smooth transition from one point to the next  Content should be organized to support the proposal  Conclusion should summarize the main points  For persuasive speeches, a five step organization called” motivated sequence pattern” ◦ Attention – focus listeners' attention ◦ Need – show that a real problem exists ◦ Satisfaction – Purpose a solution to the demonstrated problem ◦ Visualization – helps the audience to visualize the impact of the solution
  5. 5.  Action – encourage and urge them to think, feel, and act  Set a positive mood right in the begging  Establish your credibility your training, experience, commitment and convention  Speak fluently throughout  Prepare thoroughly so that so that you do not hesitate
