Domains
A domain is a distinct area of influence, activity and decision making
within an organization.
Domains are delegated to people: (e.g. a unit, department, team,
circle, open domain, role, position)

Domains in Organizations
All domains in an organization
• are within the overall domain of an
organization
• may overlap (non-hierarchical
organizations)
• may be be fully contained within other
domains (hierarchical organizations)

Delegation
• delegator is accountable for a domain
• delegator delegates (part of) that domain to delegatee
• both delegator and delegatee are accountable for success
Example: team creates a role and selects one team member for the
role

Delegation:
• creates organizational structure
through distribution of work
• is essential for effectiveness of
organization
• may enable or prevent trust, autonomy

Step 1: Primary Driver / Mission
Justify the domain:
• Why does the team or role exist?
• What is the need it responds to?

Step 2: Key Responsibilities
Clarify domain:
• list the top three responsibilities (common goals or objectives)
• describe them in a way that that enables measuring success

Step 3: Key Challenges
Identify at least least three important challenges to the success of
the team/role. Challenges are related to the outside world, to the
organization, or sometimes also to specific delegatee(s). Look for
• risk
• uncertainty and complexity
• lack of skills or resources.

Step 4: Key Constraints
Describe important constraints to the autonomy and influence of the delegatee. Key constraints are either
fixed, or a matter of decision, and may be related to the outside world, the organization, or specifically to the
delegator's level of trust. Some examples:
• shared resources
• required consultations or outside influence
• time constraints
• legal constraints
• budget constraints
• audits
• expected reports

Step 5: Key Deliverables
What does the team/role provide to meet the key responsibilities
and key challenges?
What do other parties expect from the team/role?
Describe at least the top three deliverables (products, services,
experiences or transformations).

Step 6: Delegator Responsibilities
What is the delegator's contribution to the success of the
delegatee(s)?
Responsibilities should be specific and measurable, so they can be
reviewed and developed.

Step 7: Key Metrics
How can you measure the success of the delegatee(s)?
Prefer simple, continuous and actionable metrics, and relate them to
driver, responsibilities, challenges and deliverables.

Step 8: Key Resources
Essential resources, assets or privileges the delegatee(s) can make
use of in accounting for their domain.

Agree on:
• schedule for review of the delegation
• evaluation criteria in addition the key metrics
• any other relevant aspects of the evaluation.

Describe:
• customers (those who consume the team's output)
• providers of products or services essential to the work of the
delegatee(s). Include reasonable expectations about the delivery.
• any other essential stakeholders

• invite participants
