2. Introduction
An orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Bobby Chhabra has
served as the chair of orthopaedic surgery at the
University of Virginia (UVA) since 2013. In addition to
this role, Dr. Bobby Chhabra provides aid to the UVA
Athletics Department as a team physician.
Team physicians care for a variety of medical
conditions, including injuries to the hands and wrists.
Jammed fingers are a common injury that can occur
in nearly every sport. The condition arises when a
finger, fully extended, is struck at its tip. The sudden
impact sprains the ligament or joint capsule.
3. Jammed Fingers
Typical symptoms include swelling, pain, and
tenderness.
A team physician will advise a player to rest and ice
the impacted area. If it is imperative to return to a
game before a jammed finger heals, the physician
will wrap the area with buddy tape, which secures an
injured finger with a healthy one for support. The two
fingers can still bend, but they cannot twist or move
laterally. The limitation in movement reduces further
inflammation.
