ANNOUNCEMENT
Brabant Biennial is a platform where different parties
come together to discuss spatial problems of our
time and identify new possible solutions. Organized
for the first time this year by Brabant Academy Ein-
dhoven, Biennale searches for ‘Brains and creativ-
ity’ inviting participants to present and discuss new
concepts for better urban spaces.
Accompanying exhibition ‘WANTED: Brains and
Creativity’ in Catharina Church Eindhoven features
works of young architects and urban designers. We
look for fresh and innovative ideas of how to im-
prove our cities and districts, make them more so-
cial and human oriented. We take a step back and
ask ourselves what to do with our industrial heritage
– empty buildings, industrial canal zones, station ar-
eas. But we also let ourselves dream and imagine
how our urban spaces can look like in the future...
In the main nave of the church you can enter the
industrial world of Den Marino whose photo exhibi-
tion ‘IndustReality’ shows the landscapes of Rus-
sian industrial plants.

This magazine is the report of the 1st Brabant Bi-
ennial from 17-19th of October 2012, held in the
Catharina Church in Eindhoven and the exposition
from 17-28th of October in the same church during
the 11th Dutch Design Week.
WHY: During the nineties of the last century the Q-
foundation organised the first urban debates in the
Plaza Futura theatre near the White Village in Ein-
dhoven. By using the name QAFE the idea was to
start up an informal dialogue with people who were
concerned about the quality of the architecture and
urban environment in the city Eindhoven. The de-
velopments, started up by inhabitants of the White
Village during the eighties, were successful and had
led to (inter)national attention to this example of
admired Dutch architecture and urban design. The
Technical University had brought several talented
young architects and people felt the need to use
this identity and show it in the city.
In the beginning of the new age (2000) the aware-
ness grew that Eindhoven had lost its ‘making’
industry but has kept its ‘thinking’ industry. This
brand new discovered identity, build on the skills of
the early inventors of Philips, has brought the city
a new Technical University and a Design Academy
in which this knowledge industry has got more
fundamental tools to improve it. The cooperation
with knowledge institutes and city department was
founded by governmental funding and started to
show new found solutions for urban questions from
young talented students. ‘The city as a laboratory’
was the title for a studio in which students and civil
servants and architects worked together to find an-
swers for actual urban questions.
The 1st Brabant Biennial 17-19 Oktober 2012 | WANTED: Brains and Creativity in Catharina Church Eindhoven
Since 2005 those results were presented during
the Dutch Design Week. First in an empty former
law house next to the city hall with the ‘STOE+P’
event and in February 2006 ‘MAATSCHAPPOIJ EN
DESIGN’. It showed and discussed also the value
of these empty buildings. After this building was re-
used as a DESIGN HOUSE the event took place in
the city hall, but the funding stopped. At that time in
2009 the virtual Brabant Academy was founded to
continue this valuable informal urban network in the
city. In 2012 the city of Eindhoven took part in the
5th International Architectural Biennial in Rotterdam
(IABR) with a presentation that painted the actual
development in the profession: ‘from blue print to
social design’. It showed that Eindhoven is ready
to focus on breeding place in the city: those places
where young talented people started up their own
network and creative industry.
Brabant Academy wanted to take part in this devel-
opment by starting up international cooperation and
sharing this knowledge. The Design Week is the
perfect moment to invite international companions
to come to Eindhoven to take part in this event but
also share knowledge and innovations and meet
each other in a more personal way.
That is WHY the 1st Brabant Biennial was organised
just three months before it took place and without
any funding at all. It should also be a sign for a new
gene-ration to show that it is possible to start work-
ing on your dreams today and share the results on
an informal way, just to feel connected and inspired.
A moment to ‘take fuel’ and to ‘charge the battery’
to continue this new way of work in a time in which
there are no jobs.
A moment also to meet and communicate in real
time and‘life’ (and not on SKYPE) with internatio-nal
people and to have dinner and fun too.
HOW: The only way to get result was to gather all
the work that has been done by students in the
‘CityLAB’ and to show the best results of that by
people within the informal network that already ex-
ists in Eindhoven. This network appeared since the
4 Apostelen were asked to join and together with
a new network of students from Russia who came
for an internship at the City Department. A CREW
was born that grew to incredible efforts and results.
Izabela Boloz, graduated from the Design Acad-
emy, became the curator of the exhibition. Kostas
Tsagkas (one of the ‘12 Apostelen’) designed the
exposition and made the construction. Two Dutch
interns Maurits and Roy took part in the preparation
of the Biennial and exhibition and 5 Russian interns
Anna, Elena, Alex, Nadya and Nastya also took part
and finished the project with their contribution in
the neighbourhood where they lived. The proposal
for Doornakkers was relized in the LICI project with
the City Department and Social Housing Company
Woonbedrijf. This crew made possible to use the
skills of the people involved for a perfect result.

INTRODUCTION
During the Dutch Design Week there was:
1st Brabant Biennial (17-19 of October)
Exhibition (17-28th of October)
Russian guests program (DDW and excur-
sions to RUHR, Rotterdam etc.)
The whole event felt a little bit like starting up a
company with all the risks that could and should be
taken. More special the financial part with not hav-
ing any money at all but only build on enthusiasm of
people and may be a small amount at the end. That
is why those 3 months felt like a whole year and the
people who were involved became a family.
I am very proud to have been part of this crew and
more than happy with the result. It shows a way to
work on your dreams and get energy from it.
Enjoy reading it!

INTRODUCTION
Being an intern at Municipality Eindhoven I’ve got a
unique chance to take part in organizing and held-
ing the First Brabant Biennial, to see everything and
to feel it all with my own experience.
When the event was over we all had to acknowl-
edge, that it had been a great challenge to all of us.
The assigned task appeared to be more than com-
plicated: to set the exposition in the main and big-
gest church of Eindhoven and to held the Biennial
with minimal financial support.
Actually i can’t still define what was more precious -
the experience I’ve got or the connection created...
During Biennial I’ve got aquainted to wonderful peo-
ple. And I mean not onle the members of our team,
but also the Catharina Church staff. I really want to
thank all of them for lots of amazing and fantastic
moments we’vw had together!
If it doesn’t kill you, it makes you sronger...So, Bra-
bant Biennial challenge turned to a good school of
life for me. And I guess for all of us))

A former industrial canal area characterizes
each city and is waiting to be
TRANSFORMED.
The B5 Canal Zone research spans over three
years of architectural design studios, work-
shops and seminars at the Technical University
of Eindhoven as well as several European part-
ner universities. A new design approach was
adopted in the process that crosses the notions
of SENSITIVITY and creativity in both interpre-
tation and intervention of structures of histori-
cal significance in dismissed industrial sites.
B5 CANAL ZONES The REUSE of the ever-growing amount of
abandoned industrial areas in contemporary
cities has received much attention in the last
decades.
In the past industrial terrains were located in
the outskirts of the city or in a self-isolating lo-
cation; nowadays, the urban growth has absor-
bed them, determining a new strategic posi-
tion in the settled city for these sites.
The B5 canal zones are situated within the five
largest cities of Noord Brabant: Eindhoven, Hel-

EINDHOVENSCH KANAAL
Known as ‘de Kade’, the canal zone along the Eindhovensch
Kanaal, is situated in the western part of the city. Similarly to a
pin, the canal deeply punctures the urban fabric, connecting
at the same time the old center to the nearby highway and the
open landscape beyond.
Historically, the canal was built between 1843-46 in order to
connect the city of Eindhoven to the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal
that was running from‘s-Hertogenbosch to Liege, in Belgium.
The purpose was to support the navigation of boats for indu-
strial transportation of goods such as machines, coal, wool
and wooden rafts for making matches and cigar boxes. Philips’
factories used the canal intensively for transporting glass and
light bulbs.
At the beginning, the industrial area was located outside the
city of Eindhoven, at the intersection with the Dommel river
and the North-South water route; later, it grew towards the
urban centre, around the head of the canal. Between 1929
and 1934 the canal was widened and modernized. The con-
struction of industrial buildings around it increased exponen-
tially until the 70’s, especially after the realization of the ring
road in 1962.‘de Kade’had become the biggest industrial area
of the city.
Only in 1974 the canal was closed to navigation and since
then it has only had a recreational use such as rowing and fi-
shing.

HAVENKWARTIER
The canal zone of Breda is an appendix of the Mark river. The
area is called‘Havenkwartier’and this industrial area is charac-
terized by a large variety of industrial buildings of different
sizes and qualities; they are mostly abandoned, used as tem-
porary studios by artists or as storage spaces by different fac-
tories. Havenkwartier is so closely located to the train station
area that by 2025 will become a key infrastructural node in the
development of the high-speed line connecting Amsterdam
to Paris.
Historically, the area of Havenkwartier was a polder until 1918
and only in 1924 the digging of the canal was commenced.
The first plans of construction in the area are dated 1927: the
Belcrum district, in 30s style, is the first and most representati-
ve urban development. Designed by hr. Sheep, the urban
structure of the housing district is leaning on Speelhuiselaan,
an historical allée leading to a royal park, outside to the city
center of Breda.
Later, this street was extended to the harbour area and
became the main axis along which notable industrial buil-
dings were realized. The main activity of these factories was
related to the processing and auction of fruit and vegetables.
Others, like the ‘Ketelmakerij NV Machinefabriek’ Breda by
Backer and Rueb, produced machinery such as large boilers
and steam enginesis. Built in 1927 the‘Machinefabriek’is one
of the oldest industrial buildings existing in the area.
In the 70s the canal entered a period of decline and in 1976 it
was officially closed for industrial use. Nowadays boathouses
are mooring along the quays.

The canal zone is located to the west of the historical city
center of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, birthplace and home of one of
the greatest painters of the northern renaissance, Hieronymus
Bosch (1450-1516). As brief history, ’s-Hertoegenboch was fo-
unded in the 12th century as fortified city and much of this
heritage remains, such as the city walls and ramparts, are still
visible; two rivers, the Dommel and Aa, flow together in the
city and continue as Dieze into the river Mouse. Of particular
interest is the so-called‘Binnendieze’network of canals, which
were originally 22km long, hidden under the old city.
The canal zone of ‘s-Hertogenbosch forms the north-head of
the Zuid-Willemsvaart, which was dug between 1816-1825
under the rule of KingWillem I. A variety of buildings, from dif-
ferent time periods, characterize the canal. On the side closest
to the old city are located industrial buildings from the 19th
century, such as the cigar factory Willem II en de Verkade Fac-
tory, and remnants of the railway line used for the domestic
transport of goods. Here progressing towards the outskirts of
the city, we encounter a historical sluice, listed as monument,
and buildings from the early 40’s to the 90’s as well as numero-
us large parking lots.
In the late 60’s a flyover road was built over the canal, dividing
it visually in two distinct zones. According to future plans, this
road will be turned into a tunnel under the canal.

KANAALDIJK
The canal zone of Helmond is a part of the well-known Zuid--
Willemsvaart canal from about 1800, which physically con-
nects the city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch to Maastricht, going as far
as Liège in Belgium. Three locks located along the Zuid-Wil-
lemsvaart are actually listed monuments.
The canal zone of Helmond is the south‘head’of the Zuid-Wil-
lemvaart canal. A variety of industrial heritage buildings are
located here, among which are the large footprints of three
important industrial sites:
1. The Vlisco factory, dated 1846, which was a textile company
that is still active today, involved in the production and expor-
tation of wax-prints to the Dutch East Indies (the actual Indo-
nesia);
2. The Nedschroef factory, internationally well known as sup-
plier in the automotive sector, which is from 1894 and its origi-
nal company activity was the production of rivets for the
ship-building industry.
3. The Edah museum, located on the north side of the canal, is
composed of two parts. The first part was built in 1927 while
the second one was added much later in the 70’s. One of the
oldest food producers in the Netherlands was located in the
first part of the construction: the Edah company.
Beside these large industrial areas, all along the water other
small former industrial buildings are located. Together with
the modern edifices, these historical buildings create an arti-
culated mix of old and new, which characterizes the architec-
ture along the canal zone.
In 1966 a major flyover road was built above the canal, divi-
ding it in two distinct areas.

PIUSHAVEN
Going by the name of Piushaven, this industrial area was
opened in 1923 with the goal of improving transportation to
the textile industry of Tilburg.
The construction of the Canal Zone had a great influence on
the development of the manufacturers. New industrial buil-
dings of a different scale and architectural style were built as a
result. In the 20’s and 30’s a large amount of goods went thro-
ugh the canal zone; freight ships delivered goods to Do-
rdrecht, Utrecht and Amsterdam on a daily basis.
In the 60’s factories started closing. This was not related to the
crisis of the textile industry, but to the changing economic
structure of Tilburg. Large companies moved to new indu-
strial areas that offered more facilities, such as larger harbors

In 1983 the southern part of Piushaven was demolished and
new homes were built instead, putting the meaning and iden-
tity of the remaining area at risk.
Luckily, the initiatives of local people stopped the demolition
plan and new ideas were promoted. The objective was to turn
the location into ‘the new harbour’, which is to become the
core of Tilburg.
Nowadays, the municipality is dealing with different sections
of the area and wishes to convert and reuse the industrial
structures that characterize the ‘Piushaven’ canal district so
strongly.

A former industrial canal area characterizes
each city and is waiting to be
TRANSFORMED.
The B5 Canal Zone research spans over three
years of architectural design studios, work-
shops and seminars at the Technical University
of Eindhoven as well as several European part-
ner universities. A new design approach was
adopted in the process that crosses the notions
of SENSITIVITY and creativity in both interpre-
tation and intervention of structures of histori-
cal significance in dismissed industrial sites.
B5 CANAL ZONES The REUSE of the ever-growing amount of
abandoned industrial areas in contemporary
cities has received much attention in the last
decades.
In the past industrial terrains were located in
the outskirts of the city or in a self-isolating lo-
cation; nowadays, the urban growth has absor-
bed them, determining a new strategic posi-
tion in the settled city for these sites.
The B5 canal zones are situated within the five
largest cities of Noord Brabant: Eindhoven, Hel-
mond,‘s Hertogenbosch, Tilburg and Breda.

Only in 1974 the canal was closed to navigation and since
then it has only had a recreational use such as rowing and fi-
shing.

Eric Pijffers

Main goal of the graduation assignment, is to make use of the existing urban fabric and the
buildings on the location. No large-scale demolition and therefore the loss of historical
monumental characteristics of site and buildings. But rather to work with what there is and to
search and establish a new interpretation which can fulfill the needs of today.
To link the characteristics of the location to the needs of the city, creates a balanced realistic
program that can contribute to the future development of the city and the region of Eindhoven.
The main program for the Power Plant is to address Brainport Exhibition Center. This gives
Brainport a visible face in the city, but also creates a place where companies, institutions and
organizations from home and abroad can engage and develop partnerships. Brainport
Exhibition Center informs, supports, facilitates, organizes and promotes these partnerships.
Within Brainport Exhibition Center are various related government organizations and event-
oriented institutions housed. Direct cooperation and exchange activities is therefore possible
and can be linked to the location. The large halls and warehouses on the site can be used for
organizing (trade) fairs, congresses, exhibitions, lectures, events and festivities. To achieve this,
the location and the buildings, including the Power Plant, has to transform from closed industrial
places, to inviting public places.
In this way serves the Power Plant - with a link to the past - again as a generator that ‘feed’ new
development and activities at the locations Strijp T and the city and region of Eindhoven.

New energy for a monumental
former Philips Power Station
Freddie Slot
ReGeneration is about reuse of the former Philips Power Station in Eindhoven in relationship to
development of the location Strijp T, Eindhoven.
In the urban fabric of Eindhoven is the monumental Power Station a recognizable landmark. Its
striking chimneys and classical façade makes this a unique building in the city of Eindhoven.
Part of the Power Plant is the overhead line street. This springs from the Power Plant and
branches from there to the former Philips locations Strijp S, T and R. In this way provided the
station the buildings on those sites of electricity, steam and warm water. The station acted
literally as a generator that made large-scale production of Philips devices possible on the
locations Strijp S, T and R.
Despite the withdrawal of Philips out of Eindhoven, is (the region of) Eindhoven a growing
important national and international economic and technical developing factor. Where formerly
Philips was the main economic force in Eindhoven, is this today played by the organization
Brainport. Brainport is a joint venture between large-and small-scale knowledge-related
institutions such as ASML, TNO and VDL-Group, and educational institutions as the Technical
University Eindhoven and the Design Academy Eindhoven.
The program for the location Strijp T and for the Power Plant is based on the qualities and
characteristics of both. Eindhoven as a growing and important economic factor, visible in
technical and cultural developments as Brainport and the emergence of events and festivals
such as Dutch Design Week and Glow, forms the base of the programmatic fulfillment of the
location Strijp T and the Power Plant.

aangenamer karakter.
in groot contrast hiermee. Er wordt planmatig omgegaan met de
formele kant van de stad. Met de informele zijde wordt veel minder
planmatig omgegaan.
samenhangend publiek domein vormgegeven.

The Eindhoven district Woensel-West has been
facing problems as the social welfare position
of a group of the inhabitants is not very strong
and safety has been an issue for years. The basic
characteristic of the area is the fact that it is in-
habited by 79 different ethnicities. The 62% are
Dutch and the 20% of the non-Dutch are Turks.
As far as the building environment is concerned,
most of the buildings are family houses, built be-
fore the Second World War.

elders in Europa.
stoftank.
nu toe altijd onzichtbare element @ is ontdekt.

readers to design their own imaginative city of
Eindhoven. This was an initiative of Patrick

of the city would be appreciated, but people
could construct whatever they wanded and so
they did. They were able to use their imagina-

This resulted in an exposition of 15 entries in

HANGCONSTRUCTIE VAN DE HOOP
In 766 vindt de grote exodus plaats.
Judas Boonstra vertrekt met de bedrijfs-
leiders en onbekende bestemming. Zijn
arbeiders in verwarring achterlatend,

In grandeur
slechts overtroffen door prins Carnaval, de
oppergrootmeester van Lampegat.
ONS ZONNESTELSEL
Ons Zonnestelsel bestaat uit 8 planeten en
de dwergplaneet Zijtaart.De belangrijkste
planeten zijn Helmond en Veghel. De Strijpse
Veghel Verkennings Omloper heeft een honderden
meters hoge karamelhoos weten vast te leggen
op het noordelijk halfrond van planeet Veghel.
De gefotografeerde karamelhoos is 800 meter
hoog.
MISSIE EVOLUON11
Na de eerste testvlucht met de katten
Felix en Félicette, die nooit terugkwamen,
was Evoluon 11 de eerste die op Helmond
landde. De bemanning bestond uit de
astronauten Willy en René van de Kerkhof.
Na een kort onderhoud met president Witte:
“Di is ne klenne stap veur ne mens,

leverbare volwassen natuurfilms, uitgegroeid is
tot marktleider . Dagelijks truckten vanuit hun
Philipshuizen, met hun Philishave gezichten
honderdduizenden arbeiders naar de fabrieks-
gebouwen.
GESTEL
STRATUM
Flora Fontein dartelt.
TONGELRE
In Tongelre hebben vijf landen plannen om
het grootste natuurreservaat ter wereld uit
de grond te stampen door bestaande natuur-
gebieden en reservaten met elkaar te ver-
binden.
Doornakkers, Geestenberg, Karpen, Villapark
en Koudenhoven tekenden in 778 een akkoord
om gezamenlijk het grootste, grensover-
schrijdende, beschermde natuurreservaat ter
wereld tot stand te brengen. Het nieuwe park
zal Grensoverschrijdend Natuurgebied, kort-
weg GreNa, genoemd worden de bestaande
natuurgebieden en wildreservaten met elkaar
verbinden. Onder andere de Berenkuil in West
Doornakkers, het meer van Karpen, de Wolven-
dijk in Koudenhoven, de Collse Molen van
Geestenberg en de vogelreservaten van Villa-
park zullen in het park geïntegreerd worden.
NOORD-WOENSEL
noordelijke continent. De hangende jeugd op
straat denkt daar anders over: ‘Er is hier geen
fuck te doen, weet je. Daar komen problemen
Achterland
is een lappendeken van naadloze suburbs en
uitgestrekte ledigheid.
PLANET EINDHOVEN Marco Vlemmix
KAART HELMOND Sander Mooren
Helmond, 29 december 2036
Beste Piet,
Hans

FANTASY MAPS
OF EINDHOVEN
In the spring of 2012 the local newspaper of
Eindhoven, Eindhovens Dagblad (ED), asked
readers to design their own imaginative city of
Eindhoven. This was an initiative of Patrick
Wiercx, journalist at ED. Some typcial landmarks
of the city would be appreciated, but people
could construct whatever they wanded and so
they did. They were able to use their imagina-
ton in its fullest expression, there were no fur-
ther conditions.
This resulted in an exposition of 15 entries in
the Van Abbe, international museum for
modern art in Eindhoven. In novermber-
december the expo will be at the Polytechnical
University of Eindhoven.
Most people introduced more 'water' in and
around the city. Three entries are shown at the
Biennale: 'Eindhoven as an island, Eindhoven as
an Israeli-Palestinian city and Eindhovens most
recent neigbourhood Meerhoven as a part of
ancient Rome.
elders in Europa.
stoftank.
nu toe altijd onzichtbare element @ is ontdekt.

INDUSTREALITY
...Factories are unique monuments of the present
which do not know analogues on complexity, ab-
surdity, utopianism and similaritywiththenature.The
factory is a first biomechanical organism which
was created by man, becoming its part, hav-
ing sated its flesh with energy of human bodies,
thought and movement. The factory as a product
of a civilisation and art space is unfairly trampled
in life haste, is overshadowed and reduced just to
functional purpose...
In my works I try to push off the spectator with
industrial space and I believe that people having
looked at this world under other corner, will change
their relation to it for more positive and interested in.
The mankind is a new god who creates the world by
common efforts, different from and similar to the na-
ture. The mankind moves and pulses in an impulse
of one live organism-creator. The individual can not
notice his contribution to making human creations,
being completely dissolved in them, and my task is
to be able to see the new latent symbols of life and
to raise them from the unconscious...

Brabant Biennial Magazine 2012

  • 4. ANNOUNCEMENT Brabant Biennial is a platform where different parties come together to discuss spatial problems of our time and identify new possible solutions. Organized for the first time this year by Brabant Academy Ein- dhoven, Biennale searches for ‘Brains and creativ- ity’ inviting participants to present and discuss new concepts for better urban spaces. Accompanying exhibition ‘WANTED: Brains and Creativity’ in Catharina Church Eindhoven features works of young architects and urban designers. We look for fresh and innovative ideas of how to im- prove our cities and districts, make them more so- cial and human oriented. We take a step back and ask ourselves what to do with our industrial heritage – empty buildings, industrial canal zones, station ar- eas. But we also let ourselves dream and imagine how our urban spaces can look like in the future... In the main nave of the church you can enter the industrial world of Den Marino whose photo exhibi- tion ‘IndustReality’ shows the landscapes of Rus- sian industrial plants. • 6. INTRO This magazine is the report of the 1st Brabant Bi- ennial from 17-19th of October 2012, held in the Catharina Church in Eindhoven and the exposition from 17-28th of October in the same church during the 11th Dutch Design Week. WHY: During the nineties of the last century the Q- foundation organised the first urban debates in the Plaza Futura theatre near the White Village in Ein- dhoven. By using the name QAFE the idea was to start up an informal dialogue with people who were concerned about the quality of the architecture and urban environment in the city Eindhoven. The de- velopments, started up by inhabitants of the White Village during the eighties, were successful and had led to (inter)national attention to this example of admired Dutch architecture and urban design. The Technical University had brought several talented young architects and people felt the need to use this identity and show it in the city. In the beginning of the new age (2000) the aware- ness grew that Eindhoven had lost its ‘making’ industry but has kept its ‘thinking’ industry. This brand new discovered identity, build on the skills of the early inventors of Philips, has brought the city a new Technical University and a Design Academy in which this knowledge industry has got more fundamental tools to improve it. The cooperation with knowledge institutes and city department was founded by governmental funding and started to show new found solutions for urban questions from young talented students. ‘The city as a laboratory’ was the title for a studio in which students and civil servants and architects worked together to find an- swers for actual urban questions. The 1st Brabant Biennial 17-19 Oktober 2012 | WANTED: Brains and Creativity in Catharina Church Eindhoven Since 2005 those results were presented during the Dutch Design Week. First in an empty former law house next to the city hall with the ‘STOE+P’ event and in February 2006 ‘MAATSCHAPPOIJ EN DESIGN’. It showed and discussed also the value of these empty buildings. After this building was re- used as a DESIGN HOUSE the event took place in the city hall, but the funding stopped. At that time in 2009 the virtual Brabant Academy was founded to continue this valuable informal urban network in the city. In 2012 the city of Eindhoven took part in the 5th International Architectural Biennial in Rotterdam (IABR) with a presentation that painted the actual development in the profession: ‘from blue print to social design’. It showed that Eindhoven is ready to focus on breeding place in the city: those places where young talented people started up their own network and creative industry. Brabant Academy wanted to take part in this devel- opment by starting up international cooperation and sharing this knowledge. The Design Week is the perfect moment to invite international companions to come to Eindhoven to take part in this event but also share knowledge and innovations and meet each other in a more personal way. That is WHY the 1st Brabant Biennial was organised just three months before it took place and without any funding at all. It should also be a sign for a new gene-ration to show that it is possible to start work- ing on your dreams today and share the results on an informal way, just to feel connected and inspired. A moment to ‘take fuel’ and to ‘charge the battery’ to continue this new way of work in a time in which there are no jobs. A moment also to meet and communicate in real time and‘life’ (and not on SKYPE) with internatio-nal people and to have dinner and fun too. HOW: The only way to get result was to gather all the work that has been done by students in the ‘CityLAB’ and to show the best results of that by people within the informal network that already ex- ists in Eindhoven. This network appeared since the 4 Apostelen were asked to join and together with a new network of students from Russia who came for an internship at the City Department. A CREW was born that grew to incredible efforts and results. Izabela Boloz, graduated from the Design Acad- emy, became the curator of the exhibition. Kostas Tsagkas (one of the ‘12 Apostelen’) designed the exposition and made the construction. Two Dutch interns Maurits and Roy took part in the preparation of the Biennial and exhibition and 5 Russian interns Anna, Elena, Alex, Nadya and Nastya also took part and finished the project with their contribution in the neighbourhood where they lived. The proposal for Doornakkers was relized in the LICI project with the City Department and Social Housing Company Woonbedrijf. This crew made possible to use the skills of the people involved for a perfect result. 6
  • 7. INTRODUCTION During the Dutch Design Week there was: 1st Brabant Biennial (17-19 of October) Exhibition (17-28th of October) Russian guests program (DDW and excur- sions to RUHR, Rotterdam etc.) The whole event felt a little bit like starting up a company with all the risks that could and should be taken. More special the financial part with not hav- ing any money at all but only build on enthusiasm of people and may be a small amount at the end. That is why those 3 months felt like a whole year and the people who were involved became a family. I am very proud to have been part of this crew and more than happy with the result. It shows a way to work on your dreams and get energy from it. Enjoy reading it! Cees Donkers 7

  • 9. Brabant Biennial is a platform where different parties come together to discuss spatial problems of our time and identify new possible solutions. Organized for the first time this year by Brabant Academy Eind- hoven, Biennale searches for ‘Brains and creativity’ - inviting participants to present and discuss new concepts for better urban spaces. Similarly to a pin, the canal deeply punctures the urban fabric, connecting at the same time the old center to the nearby highway and the open landscape beyond. Historically, the canal was built between 1843-46 in order to connect the city of Eindhoven to the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal that was running from‘s-Hertogenbosch to Liege, in Belgium. The purpose was to support the navigation of boats for indu- strial transportation of goods such as machines, coal, wool and wooden rafts for making matches and cigar boxes. Philips’ factories used the canal intensively for transporting glass and light bulbs. At the beginning, the industrial area was located outside the city of Eindhoven, at the intersection with the Dommel river and the North-South water route; later, it grew towards the urban centre, around the head of the canal. The area is called‘Havenkwartier’and this industrial area is charac- terized by a large variety of industrial buildings of different sizes and qualities; they are mostly abandoned, used as tem- porary studios by artists or as storage spaces by different fac- tories. Havenkwartier is so closely located to the train station area that by 2025 will become a key infrastructural node in the development of the high-speed line connecting Amsterdam to Paris. Historically, the area of Havenkwartier was a polder until 1918 and only in 1924 the digging of the canal was commenced. The first plans of construction in the area are dated 1927: the Belcrum district, in 30s style, is the first and most representati- ve urban development. Designed by hr. Sheep, the urban structure of the housing district is leaning on Speelhuiselaan, an historical allée leading to a royal park, outside to the city center of Breda. Later, this street was extended to the harbour area and became the main axis along which notable industrial buil- dings were realized. The main activity of these factories was related to the processing and auction of fruit and vegetables. Others, like the ‘Ketelmakerij NV Machinefabriek’ Breda by Backer and Rueb, produced machinery such as large boilers and steam enginesis. Built in 1927 the‘Machinefabriek’is one of the oldest industrial buildings existing in the area. In the 70s the canal entered a period of decline and in 1976 it was officially closed for industrial use. Nowadays boathouses are mooring along the quays. As brief history, ’s-Hertoegenboch was fo- unded in the 12th century as fortified city and much of this heritage remains, such as the city walls and ramparts, are still visible; two rivers, the Dommel and Aa, flow together in the city and continue as Dieze into the river Mouse. Of particular interest is the so-called‘Binnendieze’network of canals, which were originally 22km long, hidden under the old city. The canal zone of ‘s-Hertogenbosch forms the north-head of the Zuid-Willemsvaart, which was dug between 1816-1825 under the rule of KingWillem I. A variety of buildings, from dif- ferent time periods, characterize the canal. On the side closest to the old city are located industrial buildings from the 19th century, such as the cigar factory Willem II en de Verkade Fac- tory, and remnants of the railway line used for the domestic transport of goods. Here progressing towards the outskirts of the city, we encounter a historical sluice, listed as monument, and buildings from the early 40’s to the 90’s as well as numero- us large parking lots. In the late 60’s a flyover road was built over the canal, dividing it visually in two distinct zones. According to future plans, this road will be turned into a tunnel under the canal. Three locks located along the Zuid-Wil- lemsvaart are actually listed monuments. The canal zone of Helmond is the south‘head’of the Zuid-Wil- lemvaart canal. A variety of industrial heritage buildings are located here, among which are the large footprints of three important industrial sites: 1. The Vlisco factory, dated 1846, which was a textile company that is still active today, involved in the production and expor- tation of wax-prints to the Dutch East Indies (the actual Indo- nesia); 2. The Nedschroef factory, internationally well known as sup- plier in the automotive sector, which is from 1894 and its origi- nal company activity was the production of rivets for the ship-building industry. 3. The Edah museum, located on the north side of the canal, is composed of two parts. The first part was built in 1927 while the second one was added much later in the 70’s. One of the oldest food producers in the Netherlands was located in the first part of the construction: the Edah company. Beside these large industrial areas, all along the water other small former industrial buildings are located. Together with the modern edifices, these historical buildings create an arti- culated mix of old and new, which characterizes the architec- ture along the canal zone. The construction of the Canal Zone had a great influence on the development of the manufacturers. New industrial buil- dings of a different scale and architectural style were built as a result. In the 20’s and 30’s a large amount of goods went thro- ugh the canal zone; freight ships delivered goods to Do- rdrecht, Utrecht and Amsterdam on a daily basis. In the 60’s factories started closing. This was not related to the crisis of the textile industry, but to the changing economic structure of Tilburg. Large companies moved to new indu- strial areas that offered more facilities, such as larger harbors and better connections with railway and road infrastructures. In 1983 the southern part of Piushaven was demolished and new homes were built instead, putting the meaning and iden- tity of the remaining area at risk. Luckily, the initiatives of local people stopped the demolition plan and new ideas were promoted. The objective was to turn the location into ‘the new harbour’, which is to become the core of Tilburg. Nowadays, the municipality is dealing with different sections of the area and wishes to convert and reuse the industrial structures that characterize the ‘Piushaven’ canal district so strongly. Special attention is given to how the design relates to the different scales of the environment. On a larger scale it contributes to the wishes of Eindhoven promoting itself as design capital. The direct neighborhood of the Dutch Design Village has been transformed from parking space to a combined area for living and working. The transformation has also resulted in a better connec- tion between ‘’De Kleine Berg’’ – The name of the neighborhood – and the city center by adding crossing points and making green space easily accessible for city residents. The smallest scale is the living room of one student where the ar- chitectural space generates a framework that allows every student to decorate the room according to his or her wishes to a certain extent. No large-scale demolition and therefore the loss of historical monumental characteristics of site and buildings. But rather to work with what there is and to search and establish a new interpretation which can fulfill the needs of today. To link the characteristics of the location to the needs of the city, creates a balanced realistic program that can contribute to the future development of the city and the region of Eindhoven. The main program for the Power Plant is to address Brainport Exhibition Center. This gives Brainport a visible face in the city, but also creates a place where companies, institutions and organizations from home and abroad can engage and develop partnerships. Brainport Exhibition Center informs, supports, facilitates, organizes and promotes these partnerships. Within Brainport Exhibition Center are various related government organizations and event- oriented institutions housed. Direct cooperation and exchange activities is therefore possible and can be linked to the location. The large halls and warehouses on the site can be used for organizing (trade) fairs, congresses, exhibitions, lectures, events and festivities. To achieve this, the location and the buildings, including the Power Plant, has to transform from closed industrial places, to inviting public places. In this way serves the Power Plant - with a link to the past - again as a generator that ‘feed’ new development and activities at the locations Strijp T and the city and region of Eindhoven. Qraduation date: 30 augustus, 2012 Designed by: ing. architect. Freddie Slot Institute: Rotterdam Academy of Architecture, RAVB Committee: Willemijn Lofvers, Penne Hangelbroek, Annette Marx, Iris Schutten ReGeneration New energy for a monumental former Philips Power Station Freddie Slot ReGeneration is about reuse of the former Philips Power Station in Eindhoven in relationship to development of the location Strijp T, Eindhoven. In the urban fabric of Eindhoven is the monumental Power Station a recognizable landmark. Its striking chimneys and classical façade makes this a unique building in the city of Eindhoven. Part of the Power Plant is the overhead line street. This springs from the Power Plant and branches from there to the former Philips locations Strijp S, T and R. In this way provided the station the buildings on those sites of electricity, steam and warm water. The station acted literally as a generator that made large-scale production of Philips devices possible on the locations Strijp S, T and R. Despite the withdrawal of Philips out of Eindhoven, is (the region of) Eindhoven a growing important national and international economic and technical developing factor. Where formerly Philips was the main economic force in Eindhoven, is this today played by the organization Brainport. Brainport is a joint venture between large-and small-scale knowledge-related institutions such as ASML, TNO and VDL-Group, and educational institutions as the Technical University Eindhoven and the Design Academy Eindhoven. The program for the location Strijp T and for the Power Plant is based on the qualities and characteristics of both. Eindhoven as a growing and important economic factor, visible in technical and cultural developments as Brainport and the emergence of events and festivals such as Dutch Design Week and Glow, forms the base of the programmatic fulfillment of the location Strijp T and the Power Plant. THE INTERIOR OF A BUILDING BLOCK a planning strategy and architectural intervention ume. These include amongst others student houses for eight, six or four students but also workspaces on the ground floor. Hence the room is a combination between personal and collective identity. Competition of Eindhovens Dagblad FANTASY MAPS OF EINDHOVEN In the spring of 2012 the local newspaper of Eindhoven, Eindhovens Dagblad (ED), asked readers to design their own imaginative city of Eindhoven. This was an initiative of Patrick Wiercx, journalist at ED. Some typcial landmarks of the city would be appreciated, but people could construct whatever they wanded and so they did. They were able to use their imagina- ton in its fullest expression, there were no fur- ther conditions. This resulted in an exposition of 15 entries in the Van Abbe, international museum for modern art in Eindhoven. In novermber- december the expo will be at the Polytechnical University of Eindhoven. Most people introduced more 'water' in and around the city. Three entries are shown at the Biennale: 'Eindhoven as an island, Eindhoven as an Israeli-Palestinian city and Eindhovens most recent neigbourhood Meerhoven as a part of ancient Rome. INDUSTREALITY ...Factories are unique monuments of the present which do not know analogues on complexity, ab- surdity, utopianism and similaritywiththenature. The factory is a first biomechanical organism which was created by man, becoming its part, hav- ing sated its flesh with energy of human bodies, thought and movement. The factory as a product of a civilisation and art space is unfairly trampled in life haste, is overshadowed and reduced just to functional purpose... In my works I try to push off the spectator with industrial space and I believe that people having looked at this world under other corner, will change their relation to it for more positive and interested in. The mankind is a new god who creates the world by common efforts, different from and similar to the na- ture. The mankind moves and pulses in an impulse of one live organism-creator. The individual can not notice his contribution to making human creations, being completely dissolved in them, and my task is to be able to see the new latent symbols of life and to raise them from the unconscious...
