THE SPINNAKER
SHOWCASE
The Spinnaker is Australia’s first 10 Star Unassisted Building Energy Rated and Net Zero Energy
home. Located in the Bells Reach estate on the Sunshine Coast, this display home features solar
panels on the roof and a series of energy efficient elements which contribute to the home creating
more electricity than it consumes – thus it is considered to be a ‘net zero energy’ home.
Thompson Sustainable Homes received the “Sustainable Building Excellence” Award for the
Spinnaker design, in Stockland’s Vibe Builder Awards 2014.
This home is an example of Thompson Sustainable Homes delivering a sustainable home that is
at the cutting edge of energy efficiency which also sets a new benchmark for housing sustainability.

This display home is located in the Fitzgibbon Chase display village. Showcasing the quality

Thompson Sustainable Homes delivered this 9.5 Star Building Energy Rated display home on
the Sunshine Coast.
This home has won many housing design awards and is the product of the strong working
relationship between the visionary architect and the sustainable building methodologies of
Thompson Sustainable Homes.

This contemporary styled home located in the Birtinya Island estate on the Sunshine Coast, is an
example of Thompson Sustainable Homes delivering a custom home that is tailored to the lot
making the most of orientation, visual amenity and also the unique lot dimensions.
This home has a striking facade that stands out, whilst providing all of the sustainable features that
are expected from a Thompson Sustainable Home.
The Sea Spray estate selected Thompson Sustainable Homes to build a display home in Zilzie,
Central Queensland. The house features a contemporary design, sustainable building materials and
a unique vertical garden. This house achieved an 8 Star Building Energy Rating.

URBAN LOTS

Thompson Sustainable Homes has produced a new range of designs, the Urban Homes, which
have been developed for smaller lots, providing an affordable freehold titled housing solution.
Often built to the property boundary, the Urban Homes offer an efficient and functional building
design that provides an urban feel, whilst being low maintenance.
Unlike traditional small dwelling alternatives such as units, these designs are freehold title and do
not attract body corporate costs, delivering ongoing savings for the homeowner.

Thompson Sustainable Homes has recently constructed this five townhouse unit complex in
Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast. The spacious townhouses were designed for owner
occupiers and are complimented by the large balconies and patio areas.
The townhouses feature modern interior design incorporating features such as polished concrete
floors and feature kitchen splashbacks. Coupled with a contemporary exterior design, the
townhouses are eye catching and reflect a great working synergy between the client Architect and
Builder.
Being an infill development, the narrow site had its own unique parameters for us to work within.
With good site planning and efficient logistics we managed to deliver this project on time, on budget
and with the high quality of finish that is expected from Thompson Sustainable Homes.

NET ZERO ENERGY TERRACES
SHOWCASE
An initiative of the Urban Land Development Authority; the Net Zero Energy project consists of two
terrace style houses and two modern day lofts. The distinctiveness of this project lies in the design
and specification of the showcase terrace, which has been designed and constructed to be a Net
Zero Energy dwelling – which means that the house consumes no more electricity than it produces.
Through the help of Ecolateral, an Ecological Sustainable Development consultant and TVS
Architects, Thompson Sustainable Homes has constructed a unit that incorporates passive
sustainable features into its design to achieve the highest possible star rating for energy efficiency.
The design, combined with energy saving materials and appliances, has delivered a dwelling that
achieves net zero energy consumption from the electricity grid.
Through partnership with the abovementioned stakeholders, Thompson Sustainable Homes
has delivered an energy efficient, self-sustainable dwelling for the future. This display home
demonstrates the environmental advantages of Net Zero Energy dwellings, which seamlessly
integrate and contribute positively to the streetscape and the environment.

On this project Thompsons worked with Dr Benoit Gilbert
of Griffith University to ultimately establish a ground
breaking wind uplift resistance system. The system which
Thompson’s team invented, involved streamlining the
design of party walls to the high set duplex dwellings,
making it a more cost effective construction. This project
design consisted of removing internal steel tie down rods
inside the walls and substituting them with sheet bracing,
saving hundreds of hours of labour and thousands of dollars
in material costs. This system was tested at the world
class Griffith University by Dr Benoit Gilbert and his team,
and was shown to far exceed the minimum resistance
requirements of the existing method of construction,
prescribed by the relevant Australian Standards. It is
approaches such as this example that showcase Thompson
Building Groups’ dedication to need driven solutions and
cost effective new techniques.

HAYMAN ISLAND
APLNG MINING PROJECT
Cyclone Yasi caused extensive damage to the
five star resort on Hayman Island.
Thompson Commercial were engaged by Lend
Lease to demolish and replace over 4000m2 of
Villa-board soffit and renovate two executive
suites.
The logistical challenges were immense,
although once again the Thompson Commercial
team was up to the challenge.
Thompson Commercial were recently fortunate
enough to work with Hutchinson Builders to
complete this $50 million, 400 person modular
built accommodation village south of Miles for
APLNG.

KULA BEACH SHACKS

The award winning Kula Beach Resort Project
consisted of 32 architecturally designed units in
an array of stand alone, duplexes and triplexes.
Our performance on-site and the delivery of a
high quality carpentry and plastering package
has secured an excellent relationship with our
client, Contrast Constructions.
The project was delivered on time, on budget
and defect free, an outstanding achievement
for a project with so many different detailed
finishes.
Our Shopfitting division of Thompson
Commercial combines a mix of the Head
Contracting and Sub Contracting divisions,
providing a fit out service that delivers a
systematic approach that intricately fulfils each
stage of the fit out process.
Our highly skilled and experienced team
has successfully delivered shop fit outs to
banks, bars, restaurants, offices, museums,
universities, colleges and government authority
buildings.

In Queensland’s 2011 Building Design of the
Year Awards, “The Bloom” design won the
award for the most Environmentally Sustainable
New Home Design and also won the first prize
for new homes under $1,100 per sqm.
