ISO 45001: What it will mean to you and your business?
I am Chris J Ward and I will guide you through the presentation
Chris Ward; I retired from the Health and Safety Executive where I was a Principal Inspector. I authored the revised HSG65 Managing for Health and Safety in 2013. Currently I am a committee member of the BSI 18001. I am the manager of Linkedin EHS ISO ISO 45001 Group.
Jane Standerwick; Managing Director, Standerwick Safety Partnership.
This aim of this presentation is to give a foundation briefing on 45001. I recognize that some will know a lot more than others, so I want to try to give those who are new to this standard the background to its development, how it fits in with other standards and what the next steps will be. Jane and I will hold further webinars as the standard develops before it is published.
A brief history and comparison of the two standards.
ISO 45001 is a natural development of 18001. It is more ambitious and will require more commitment than 18001. It is predicted that many more organisations will subscribe to 45001 than 18001. For those who do not know 18001, it was revised in 2007 and is used by over 90,000 organizations worldwide
ISO 45001 is an integrated management standard (IMS). This means it has the same structure and format to other recently produced standards, e.g. 9001/14001. The common theme is based on Annex SL, which consists of 10 clauses, which all IMS have to follow. There are also common terms which must be followed.
This standard unlike 18001 will not have guidance supplements.
I will now explain some of the key differences between the standards. These really are the important and challenging clauses for organisations.
There are four crucial clauses namely: top management commitment, worker involvement, risk and opportunities and the context of the organisation.
The key words here are top management, what does that mean?
Top management is defined in the standard as a person or group of people who direct and control an organization (3.1) at the highest level
This area of the guidance will focus on the need to provide mechanisms, allocate time, organise training and supply resources necessary for participation by workers.
The intent of this clause is for the organization to obtain an understanding of the issues, positive and negative, that the organization needs to consider in establishing its OH&S management system.
The fundamental philosophy of the new standard is that the role of leadership is to take overall responsibility and accountability for the protection of workers’ work-related health and safety.
I want to offer this chance for you to have your say, the survey will take you less 3 minutes. It is designed to find out what you will need to help you achieve 45001. We will collate and analyze and send the results back to you. You will then be able to see how you compare to others. I will feed the results back to the drafting group and post on our Intelex Community ISO 45001 Group.
If you want to read the standard there is a link within the survey to see the standard.
