Innovation Zoo:
The Dangerous Animals of Product
Development and R&D Teams You Need
To Be Careful Of
Who wants to rise to the top of your industry
or enjoy a driven, creative, and loyal
team?
Then, it’s time to head out to Innovation Zoo and meet the animals of today’s
corporate world.
Whether you’re working with a high-powered HORSE, a relentless GORILLA,
or a PARROT who will always speak their mind, these innovative and driven
professionals can help you succeed.
Remember to approach each animal with care and work together as a
team to overcome any challenges that may come your way.
So, here we go.
The first animal we’ll find at Innovation Zoo is the HiPPO.
Whether you are a small startup or a well-
established company, staying vigilant
against the HiPPO effect is crucial.
The HiPPO effect tends to give decision-making power to the highest-paid
personintheroom.Theseso-called“HiPPOs”canstifleinnovationanddisrupt
progress by overriding good ideas with their opinions and preferences. But
by staying true to your vision and objectives, you can swim strongly against
the tide of these would-be disruptors.
Remember that these individuals may feel threatened by any human
activity that could threaten their status or position, so consult with them on
their terms and show them respect. And above all else, keep in mind that
HiPPOs generally don’t like change. So if you want to succeed, you need to
be prepared to disrupt the status quo with your innovative ideas. After all, if
you aren’t willing to make waves, you might stay in bed and let the HiPPOs
have their way!
But if you are a strong swimmer with big dreams and goals, know that there
are plenty of opportunities out there - even if they come at night or in a
different kind of microhabitat. Use facts and data to ward them off and keep
them at bay - they’ll eventually get tired and go away, leaving you free to
pursue your goals.
Overall, staying vigilant against the HiPPO effect is essential to driving
innovation and progress in any company - large or small.
While the WOLF may be known for its short
attention span, it is also known for its
incredible intelligence.
This combination can make the WOLF a disruptor of innovation, as it is
always looking for the next new thing. However, this disruptiveness can also
be a strength. The WOLF constantly searches for new and better ways to
solve problems.
If you can harness the WOLF’s energy and focus it on a single issue, you will
have a powerful ally on your team. Just keep an eye on the WOLF, as it may
jump to the next problem before the current one is solved.
The old saying goes, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” And that’s precisely
what you’ll be doing if you allow the WOLF to disrupt your team’s focus
and innovation. While they may be born deaf, they can run very fast. As a
result, their instinct is to jump from one problem to the next; this disrupts
your team’s ability to solve problems, effectively leaving easy prey for your
competitors.
To avoid this, create a process for collecting feedback about issues or bugs
and only consider these and all other requests. This prioritisation will help
you stay focused on the task and avoid being distracted by the WOLF.
These lumbering beasts disrupt innovation
and charge in whenever they see a bright,
shiny opportunity (often tied to the possibility of
revenue or a top-tier customer).
Heed the RHINO, and they might be satisfied temporarily. Still, you could end
up with a fragmented product that doesn’t solve any problem well. Having
a clearly defined prioritisation strategy can help RHINOs understand how to
make decisions and surface their requests appropriately.
Despite their size, RHINOs are surprisingly nimble regarding sensing
opportunities. They have incredible hearing and smell, but their vision is
poor; this makes them particularly dangerous as they’re drawn to bright,
shiny objects. And because they’re colour blind, they often mistake red for
green, resulting in them barrelling straight into danger.
But the most significant danger posed by RHINOs is their horns. These prized
possessions are why poachers hunt these creatures. They’re constantly on
the lookout for potential threats; this makes them very nosey, and they’ll
often snoop around in places they’re not welcome.
So if you want to get on the good side of a RHINO, the best thing to do is
communicate with them clearly and give them what they want when they
ask for it.
These people think they know it all, but they
rely on their instinct rather than actual
evidence.
As a result, they’re the ones who disrupt innovation and slow down progress.
Luckily, they’re also an endangered species.
With their brazen attitudes and disregard for evidence, ZEBRAs constitute a
significant threat to innovation. These disruptors love to stir up trouble by
aggressively pushing new ideas without regard for the consequences.
To stay ahead of the ZEBRA hordes, it is crucial that you arm yourself with
data and solid experiments when making important decisions. So come up
with quick experiments you can run to test ideas and gather evidence.
ZEBRAS are also very disruptive, so it’s essential to keep them away from
areas that can cause mayhem. The best way to do this is to have a clear
plan and stick to it. ZEBRAS thrive on chaos, so the more organised you are,
the better.
Finally, don’t forget that ZEBRAS are also very fast, so make sure you’re
always one step ahead of them.
These slippery little creatures are masters of
sneakingaroundandgatheringinformation.
As a result, they can be incredibly disruptive and valuable on your side.
SNAKES are very sneaky and can often be found slithering around where
they’re not welcome. In addition, they’re masters of gathering information,
which can be helpful but can also disrupt your work.
To avoid this problem, set clear boundaries and make sure you protect
sensitive data from SNAKES.
SNAKES are also known for their ability to strike at a moment’s notice, so you
need to watch them. The best way to do this is to have a clear plan and be
prepared for anything.
Finally, don’t forget that SNAKES are also very fast, so make sure you’re
always one step ahead of them.
The HORSE is a remarkable and brilliant
creature with a nearly 360-degree field of
vision and lightning-fast reflexes.
These qualities make them fantastic strategic thinkers, but they can be
challenging to work with.
HORSEs are driven by efficiency and speed, meaning their first instinct is
to optimise every process and eliminate any inefficiencies. But while this is
great for productivity, it can also result in a lack of innovation and creativity.
Therefore, it is crucial to have a clear plan and give HORSEs specific goals to
work towards to balance these needs.
Happy to sleep standing up, HORSEs are known for their endurance and
stamina. But while they can go the distance, they can also be hot-headed
and impatient.
So the key to working with HORSEs is to give them clear direction and plenty
of time to complete their tasks.
As anyone who has worked with COWs can
attest, these hardworking professionals
are inflexible and stubborn.
But what many people don’t realise is that COWs bring years of valuable
experience and knowledge to the table, making them an essential part of
any team. Whether sniffing out lies or eagerly consuming complex data,
COWs strive to disrupt the status quo and push innovation forward.
With their wide visual field of 330° and almost an all-around view, COWs
are always looking for new insights and ideas. In addition, their natural life
expectancy of around twenty years only emphasises their dedication and
determination to succeed in their careers. And despite their reputation
for being notoriously picky eaters, COWs have a powerful sense of smell,
allowing them to track down important information quickly.
Overall, these hardworking professionals are essential contributors to any
organisation or team, bringing intellectual curiosity and tenacity wherever
they go.
So the next time you see a COW stomping around your office, remember
that they’re not just blindly following the herd. Instead, COWs are disruptors
who will help push your business forward.
Despite their loyal and dependable nature,
DOGs can sometimes be overly dependent
on their colleagues and hesitant to disrupt the
status quo.
Unfortunately, this tendency often leads them to rely on guesses and
assumptions rather than much-needed facts and data when making
decisions, leading to problems both inside and outside of the workplace.
Their superior sense of smell means that DOGs can pick up on subtle
nuances in their environment that many others can’t. As a result, DOGs are
invaluable for navigating challenging situations or uncovering valuable
insights. However, this trait can also cause them to become overly reliant on
instinct rather than critical thinking, making hasty and sometimes incorrect
assumptions about complex issues.
In addition, DOGs tend to struggle with certain types of physical exertion
due to their unique physiology. For example, they cannot sweat like we do,
making it more challenging to cool down during intense stress or pressure.
Likewise, they have been known to have difficulty keeping up with high-
speed tasks such as swimming or competing with other animals in a race.
However, despite these limitations, DOGs continue to be an invaluable asset
in the business world. They can bring innovative ideas and problem-solving
approaches to any organisation.
So the next time you meet a DOG on the job, remember that while they may
sometimes rely on guesses and assumptions, they also bring an incredible
amount of intelligence, energy, and drive to help your team succeed.
No one doubts the power, intelligence, and
tenacity of TIGERS.
These ambitious professionals always take the initiative to drive their teams
towards success, no matter how difficult or challenging the task. And thanks
to their incredible work ethic and exceptional problem-solving skills, they
consistently deliver exemplary results regardless of the situation.
TIGERs are constantly working to stay ahead of the competition, often taking
the initiative to hunt at night for their next leads. Whether tracking down
new leads or taking on complex projects, these go-getters never shy away
from a challenge and constantly push themselves to achieve success in
everything they do.
Sadly, only half of the TIGER cubs survive beyond their first year of life, leaving
those that are left to feel a strong sense of urgency and drive. And while
this intense focus on success may not always be the most conducive to
collaboration and team-building, it does allow TIGERS to get more done in
less time than many other professionals.
A word of warning: a punch from a TIGER may kill you. However, if you can
survive this attack (and have a taste for the finer things in life), bear in mind
that TIGERs love to swim and play. They can be incredibly loyal companions
for those who can weather the storm.
CHICKENs are some of the most
compassionate and caring team members
in the Innovation Zoo.
They are always looking out for the well-being of others and making sure
everyone is nourished and healthy. Whether it’s bringing in fresh ideas or
providing support during difficult times, CHICKENs are always there to help
their team succeed.
CHICKENs can see the world more colourfully than most of us due to the
ability to see ultraviolet light and iridescent hues. They are also a genius,
able to form friendships, recognise faces, and have a profound memory.
With their holistic outlook and keen foresight, CHICKENs make an excellent
company for any team that values creativity, innovation, and a deep
understanding of its inner workings. CHICKENs love to play and have a strong
sense of fun, but they also work hard and are fiercely loyal to their team.
Just be warned: if you cross a CHICKEN, they will never forget it, and they get
pretty upset when a team member leaves the roost.
As the king or queen of the jungle, LIONS are
natural-born leaders with a regal presence
that commands respect and admiration from
others.
In addition, the male LIONS have magnificent manes that tell a story of their
lineage in leadership. Despite their lofty position, these ambitious individuals
don’t forget the importance of teamwork and live in the pride of their close
friends and family.
With their keen senses and ability to hunt in any weather, LIONS are natural-
born predators that can spot potential prey from miles away. And once
they’ve caught an animal, they’re not afraid to take on even the most
enormous, most intimidating beasts with nothing but raw determination
and strength.
While LIONS may be the most feared animal in the jungle, they are also some
of the most gentle and loving creatures you’ll ever meet. They are fiercely
loyal to their family and friends, and they will do anything to protect them
from harm.
So if you’re looking for a leader you can always trust to have your back, look
no further than the LION. Just be prepared for that roar when things go wrong.
Whether taking on complex projects or chasing down leads, LIONs always
work hard to achieve success in everything they do as individuals and as
leaders. However, they will like to mark their territory and may leave behind
a big mess that can be hard to clean up.
With the ability to jump up to five times their
height and six times their length, CATs
can appear a bit jumpy and sprightly.
But don’t let their energetic nature fool you – CATs are incredibly clever and
talented individuals who excel at problem-solving and exploring new ideas.
CATs can be pretty independent despite their energy, preferring to work
alone or with a small group of trusted team members rather than in large,
noisy teams. They are, after all, genetically 95.6% TIGER.
CATs can be sourpusses, but they are also some of the most loving and
loyal creatures you’ll ever meet. When they’re not curled up on the beanbag
in the breakout room taking a nap, they enjoy playing with their favourite
toy or chasing down a pesky MOUSE.
While CATs may not be the most straightforward team members, they are
certainly among the most intelligent. Their peripheral and night vision is
unmatched.
So if you’re looking for a talented problem-solver with a sly sense of humour
and the ability to see things from a new perspective, look no further than the
CAT. Just don’t let them claw up your office furniture!
CATs always get their teeth into something new and exciting, whether
navigating complex projects or chasing down leads.
Cowering behind his tiny mouse hole, the
MOUSE can live in a lab for up to two years
but usually only survives for about five months
in the wild.
A timid creature that is often under-appreciated, the MOUSE is nevertheless
essential to the ecosystem of any office.
Contrary to popular opinion, the MOUSE does not love cheese, but it
does have teeth that grow constantly. It uses these teeth to navigate its
environment, communicating with body language and grooming habits.
Though the MOUSE may seem meek and unassuming, it is a surprisingly
resourceful creature capable of solving complex problems and navigating
challenging projects. Furthermore, with the ability to vary its sleeping habits
by the environment and produce up to 100 droppings per day, the MOUSE is
an essential member of any team.
So if you’re looking for a reliable and hardworking teammate that can adapt
to any situation, look no further than the humble MOUSE.
YouwillknowaGORILLAbytheirbigpersonality
and even bigger opinions.
Often the loudest voice in the room, GORILLAS are relentless leaders striving
for excellence – even if they don’t consistently achieve it.
GORILLAs are often found at the top of the totem pole in their respective
fields, but they tend to be more talk than action. While they are great at
coming up with ideas and motivating others to achieve results, they often
lack the follow-through to see those ideas through to fruition - they’re more
interested in eating all day and napping in the sun than actually doing the
work.
Often relatively isolated, GORILLAS can be found in their natural habitat of
the boardroom or the corner office.
Passionate and optimistic, the PARROT is a
social creature that loves nothing more than
to share its opinions with others.
Usually found in pairs or small groups, PARROTs are highly social creatures
that love to chatter.
PARROTs are very passionate about their beliefs and will often go to great
lengths to defend them - even if they don’t have all the facts. They routinely
rely on testimonials and anecdotes rather than evidence or data, making
them seem irrational.
Despite their passion, PARROTs are generally good-natured creatures that
mean well. They are always looking for the best in people and finding the
silver lining in every situation.
The OX is a hardworking creature that is often
overworked and exhausted.
Usually found in the middle of the pack, the OX is the workhorse of any team
- they are reliable, dependable, and always willing to put in the extra hours
to get the job done.
While the OX may not be the most exciting team member, they are essential
to any group. Without their dedication and commitment, many projects
would never get off the ground without the OX’s stamina and determination.
So if you’re looking for a team member that you can always count on to get
the job done, look no further than the OX.
The OX does see red from time to time. When they feel overwhelmed or
overworked, they can be pretty grumpy and irritable. But if you can get
through to their good nature, you’ll find a friend for life.
The CROC is a slippery creature that
continuously calculates the risks and costs
of any situation.
Usually found lurking in the shadows, the CROC is a master of manipulation
and deception.
Cold and calculating, the CROC constantly weighs the pros and cons of any
situation. They are experts at finding the hidden costs and risks that others
may not see; this makes them invaluable in business deals and negotiations.
However, their tendency to obscure the actual price of things can also make
them dangerous enemies. While the CROC may seem heartless, they are
very loyal creatures. Once they have committed to a cause or a team, they
will stick with it until the end.
This loyalty can be both a blessing and a curse. They can be fiercely
protective of those they care about - even if it means sacrificing themselves.
The SHARK is a ruthless predator that is always
on the hunt for its next meal.
Usually found at the top of the food chain, the SHARK is a master of strategy
and manipulation.
Rationale and logic mean nothing to the SHARK - they are driven by their
instincts and hunger. They will stop at nothing to get what they want, and
they will ruthlessly devour anything in their way.
The SHARK is a dangerous opponent, but they can also be valuable allies.
Their strategic mind and ability to think on their fins can be a great asset in
any team or organisation. But be warned - the SHARK is also known for its
temper. If you cross them, they will not hesitate to attack.
So if you are looking for a partner that can help you achieve your goals,
the SHARK may be just what you need. But beware - they are dangerous
creatures, and they will not hesitate to devour you if you cross them.
Tread water cautiously.
The AARDVARK is a strange creature that is
absolutely and ridiculously determined
and a vigilant achiever regardless of what the
Kanban board says.
This creature is often found in scrum meetings, product demos, and
management reviews. It is known for its single-minded focus and ability to
get things done - no matter the obstacles.
The AARDVARK is a powerful ally but can also be a dangerous enemy. Its
determination and tenacity can be a force for good, but it can also be a
force for destruction. If the AARDVARK is not checked, it can run amok and
cause havoc.
So if you are looking for an absolutely and ridiculously determined partner,
the AARDVARK may be just what you need. But beware - this creature can
be a force for good or evil.
TheBEARisafiercecreaturethatalwaysbrings
extraordinary achievements regardless of
the situation.
This creature is often found in the boardroom, the courtroom, and the
battlefield. It is known for its strength, courage, and determination. Fiercely
protective of its family and friends, the BEAR is a loyal ally.
But be warned - the BEAR is also known for its temper. If you cross them, they
will not hesitate to attack.
The BEAR is a force to be reckoned with, so tread carefully. But if you are
looking for a strong, brave, and determined partner, the BEAR may be just
what you need.
The PANDA likes to fade into the background
and is happy for their work to speak for itself.
Related to the BEAR, the PANDA cares for the newbies during their first months,
always offers a helping hand and is never disruptive. You will find the PANDA
peacefully going about its business, eating bamboo and minding its affairs.
You’ll only see the GIRAFFE near the water
cooler every few days.
They are always busy sticking their neck out for others and working on their
next project. However, the GIRAFFE is gifted in recognising and facilitating
future fun events.
While the GIRAFFE may seem aloof and disconnected, they are pretty social
and outgoing. A long-serving team member, some GIRAFFEs have been
known to stay around for 25 years!
But, when they do eventually leave, it is usually for greener pastures.
The DOVE is a gentle creature that delivers
outstanding values every day.
Usually found in the clouds, the DOVE is a master of peace and love.
While the DOVE may seem frail, they are pretty strong and resilient, often
found carrying an olive leaf or box of chocolate biscuits to symbolise peace.
The DOVE is always looking for ways to improve its situation and make the
world a better place.
The EAGLE is a powerful creature that is
excellent at gathering leveraged evidence.
Usually found in the mountains, the EAGLE is a master of strategy and
planning. Cold and calculating, the EAGLE swoops down on its prey with
precision and accuracy.
Heartless, cruel, and resourceful, the EAGLE views the world differently, often
looking for ways to take advantage of the situation.
The elephant is an extraordinary creature. It
has an exceptional memory, but it is also
incredibly patient and tolerant.
These qualities lead the ELEPHANT to be a symbol of wisdom and knowledge
in many board rooms. However, ELEPHANTs can also be quite nosey from
time to time. This curiosity often gets them into trouble, making them
fascinating animals.
Whether they are raiding a competitor for leads or gently playing with their
young, ELEPHANTs always seem to be doing something interesting.
It is no wonder that they are such a famous sight at zoos and safari parks
worldwide.
The CAMEL is a hardy creature that can go
for long periods without food or water - a
master of endurance and stamina.
While the CAMEL may seem lazy and slow, they are very consistent and
reliable. One of the best things about working with a CAMEL is that they are
always accommodating and willing to help out; this is especially important
when things get busy or unforeseen obstacles.
However, it is also great to know that they always watch things and emulate
their leader; this helps create a cohesive and efficient work environment.
Great CAMELs are essential for any business or organisation.
We are fortunate to have worked with many great CAMELs over the years.
Why is it that some people, no matter how
much they achieve, feel the need to
take unnecessary risks that could jeopardise
everything in the whole company?; this is the
question that has puzzled psychologists for
years.
The TURTLE is a perfect example of this phenomenon. These creatures are
known for taking unnecessary risks and often result in them getting hurt or
even killed. But why do they do it?
One theory is that TURTLEs crave the attention and admiration of their peers.
They want to be seen as brave and daring, so they take risks that other
people wouldn’t dream of taking; this can lead to some impressive feats,
but it also means that TURTLEs are more likely to get themselves into trouble.
Lingering is another of the TURTLE’s defining characteristics. They are often
reluctant to leave a safe and comfortable place, even when it is clear that
there is no reason to stay; this can lead to them missing out on good sales
opportunities or, worse, getting stuck in dangerous situations.
These guys have their hands in everything.
They are the masterminds behind all of the
company’s outrageous and creative ideas.
But when it comes actually to selling these ideas, they are practically useless.
OCTOPUSes are always coming up with new and innovative ideas. Still,
they have a hard time executing them because they are so focused on the
theoretical aspects of their beliefs that they don’t bother actually to learn
how to sell them.
As a result, their thoughts often never see the light of day. However, once the
OCTOPUS has a bright idea, they will stick with it for years, trying to perfect it.
If you are working with an OCTOPUS, it is essential to remember that they
need plenty of support to execute their ideas. Without this support, their
creativity will go to waste.
You’ll find that the OCTOPUS typically will hold a leadership position in an
organisation due to their creative ability to come up with new ideas.
Hands up: who knows a PIG? We all know
at least one in our lifetimes, and they’re
usually pretty easy to spot.
PIGs are the type of people who are content with their lot in life and have no
genuine desire to improve or change things. They’re happy just pottering
around and doing the same thing day in, day out. They are stuck in a rut,
rolling in the mud.
PIGs tend to be poor leaders because they’re not interested in growth - either
for themselves or for their team. So, unfortunately, they’re often resistant to
change and new ideas, stifling innovation and progress.
If you’re working with a PIG, it’s important to remember that they need to be
given plenty of space to do their own thing. Trying to force them out of their
comfort zone will only make them resistant to change.
Instead, focus on helping them see the value in growth and development
- both for themselves and the team. Once they understand this, you’ll find
that they’re much more open to new ideas and willing to embrace change.
The CHIMP is always calculating the return on
investment for every situation.
They want to know the most impactful use of their time and resources. If
something isn’t going to produce the results they want, they’re not interested.
They’d instead be picking low-hanging fruit - the things that will give them
the most significant return with the least effort - or counting beans.
That’s not to say that CHIMPs don’t invest in long-term projects, but they’re
always looking for ways to increase the ROI; this can be good or bad,
depending on how you look.
On the one hand, CHIMPs are very efficient and quickly get results. But, on
the other hand, their laser focus on ROI can sometimes lead them to miss
out on opportunities.
So if you’re working with a CHIMP, it’s essential to make sure that they
understand the full scope of the project and its potential impact. Help them
see beyond the immediate ROI in dollar terms and consider the long-term
benefits. With their help, you can achieve great things - but only if you can
get them to see the big picture.
We saw lots of OSTRICHes during COVID
lockdown, didn’t we?
People who only saw the pandemic results in hindsight and did nothing to
prepare for it or protect themselves.
Sticking their heads deep into the sand, OSTRICHes are often in denial about
the reality of a situation. They don’t like to face facts or take responsibility
for their choices. And when things go wrong, they always seem to be the
last ones to know; this can be frustrating for those around them, who often
have to deal with the consequences of the OSTRICH’s poor choices. But
it’s important to remember that OSTRICHes are usually well-meaning and
simply don’t like to face complex problems head-on.
If you’re working with an OSTRICH, try to be patient and help them see the
situation for what it is. Once they accept responsibility, they can usually be
counted on to take corrective action.
But if you’re not careful, their denial and avoidance may cause more harm
than good.
When it comes to innovation, MONKEYs are
all about nurturing the next generation of
talent.
They’re motivated by the knowledge that their work will help young people
learn and grow; this can be a great motivator, but it can also lead to
challenges.
For one thing, MONKEYs often have high expectations for those they’re
nurturing. They want to see their protégés succeed - and sometimes, they
can be too hard on them; this can lead to frustration and disappointment,
both for the MONKEY and the people they’re trying to help.
It’s also important to remember that MONKEYs are often more interested in
the process of innovation than the result; this means that they’re often more
comfortable with change and ambiguity than other people.
So if you’re working with a MONKEY, be prepared for things to change - and
be flexible yourself.
Overall, MONKEYs are driven by a desire to help others learn and grow. If you
can tap into this motivation, you can harness their creative potential and
drive real progress.
Sometimes you just need a new perspective.
That’s where HYENA comes in.
When it comes to innovation, HYENA is all about helping you evaluate new
approaches. They’re constantly on the lookout for new meaty ideas. They’re
always willing to try something new; this can be a great asset, but it also
means that HYENA can be easily distracted by shiny objects and deadends.
So if you’re working with a HYENA, it’s essential to keep them focused on the
task at hand.
It’s also important to remember that HYENA is very interested in the social
aspects of innovation. They’re always looking for new ways to connect with
people and build relationships; this can be a great strength, but it can also
lead to challenges.
For one thing, HYENA can sometimes be too aggressive in its pursuit of
new relationships; this can lead to conflict and misunderstandings. It’s
also important to remember that HYENA is very interested in the approval
of others. They want to be liked and accepted, which can sometimes lead
them to make decisions that are not in their best interests.
Overall, HYENA can be a great asset in the innovation process. But it’s
essential to keep their strengths and weaknesses in mind. If you can do that,
you can harness their power and use it to drive real progress.

Innovation Zoo: The Dangerous Animals of Product Development and R&D Teams You Need To Be Careful Of

  • 1. Innovation Zoo: The Dangerous Animals of Product Development and R&D Teams You Need To Be Careful Of
  • 2. Who wants to rise to the top of your industry or enjoy a driven, creative, and loyal team? Then, it’s time to head out to Innovation Zoo and meet the animals of today’s corporate world. Whether you’re working with a high-powered HORSE, a relentless GORILLA, or a PARROT who will always speak their mind, these innovative and driven professionals can help you succeed. Remember to approach each animal with care and work together as a team to overcome any challenges that may come your way. So, here we go. The first animal we’ll find at Innovation Zoo is the HiPPO.
  • 3.
  • 4. Whether you are a small startup or a well- established company, staying vigilant against the HiPPO effect is crucial. The HiPPO effect tends to give decision-making power to the highest-paid personintheroom.Theseso-called“HiPPOs”canstifleinnovationanddisrupt progress by overriding good ideas with their opinions and preferences. But by staying true to your vision and objectives, you can swim strongly against the tide of these would-be disruptors. Remember that these individuals may feel threatened by any human activity that could threaten their status or position, so consult with them on their terms and show them respect. And above all else, keep in mind that HiPPOs generally don’t like change. So if you want to succeed, you need to be prepared to disrupt the status quo with your innovative ideas. After all, if you aren’t willing to make waves, you might stay in bed and let the HiPPOs have their way! But if you are a strong swimmer with big dreams and goals, know that there are plenty of opportunities out there - even if they come at night or in a different kind of microhabitat. Use facts and data to ward them off and keep them at bay - they’ll eventually get tired and go away, leaving you free to pursue your goals. Overall, staying vigilant against the HiPPO effect is essential to driving innovation and progress in any company - large or small.

  • 6. While the WOLF may be known for its short attention span, it is also known for its incredible intelligence. This combination can make the WOLF a disruptor of innovation, as it is always looking for the next new thing. However, this disruptiveness can also be a strength. The WOLF constantly searches for new and better ways to solve problems. If you can harness the WOLF’s energy and focus it on a single issue, you will have a powerful ally on your team. Just keep an eye on the WOLF, as it may jump to the next problem before the current one is solved. The old saying goes, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” And that’s precisely what you’ll be doing if you allow the WOLF to disrupt your team’s focus and innovation. While they may be born deaf, they can run very fast. As a result, their instinct is to jump from one problem to the next; this disrupts your team’s ability to solve problems, effectively leaving easy prey for your competitors. To avoid this, create a process for collecting feedback about issues or bugs and only consider these and all other requests. This prioritisation will help you stay focused on the task and avoid being distracted by the WOLF.
  • 7.
  • 8. These lumbering beasts disrupt innovation and charge in whenever they see a bright, shiny opportunity (often tied to the possibility of revenue or a top-tier customer). Heed the RHINO, and they might be satisfied temporarily. Still, you could end up with a fragmented product that doesn’t solve any problem well. Having a clearly defined prioritisation strategy can help RHINOs understand how to make decisions and surface their requests appropriately. Despite their size, RHINOs are surprisingly nimble regarding sensing opportunities. They have incredible hearing and smell, but their vision is poor; this makes them particularly dangerous as they’re drawn to bright, shiny objects. And because they’re colour blind, they often mistake red for green, resulting in them barrelling straight into danger. But the most significant danger posed by RHINOs is their horns. These prized possessions are why poachers hunt these creatures. They’re constantly on the lookout for potential threats; this makes them very nosey, and they’ll often snoop around in places they’re not welcome. So if you want to get on the good side of a RHINO, the best thing to do is communicate with them clearly and give them what they want when they ask for it.
  • 9.
  • 10. These people think they know it all, but they rely on their instinct rather than actual evidence. As a result, they’re the ones who disrupt innovation and slow down progress. Luckily, they’re also an endangered species. With their brazen attitudes and disregard for evidence, ZEBRAs constitute a significant threat to innovation. These disruptors love to stir up trouble by aggressively pushing new ideas without regard for the consequences. To stay ahead of the ZEBRA hordes, it is crucial that you arm yourself with data and solid experiments when making important decisions. So come up with quick experiments you can run to test ideas and gather evidence. ZEBRAS are also very disruptive, so it’s essential to keep them away from areas that can cause mayhem. The best way to do this is to have a clear plan and stick to it. ZEBRAS thrive on chaos, so the more organised you are, the better. Finally, don’t forget that ZEBRAS are also very fast, so make sure you’re always one step ahead of them.
  • 11.
  • 12. These slippery little creatures are masters of sneakingaroundandgatheringinformation. As a result, they can be incredibly disruptive and valuable on your side. SNAKES are very sneaky and can often be found slithering around where they’re not welcome. In addition, they’re masters of gathering information, which can be helpful but can also disrupt your work. To avoid this problem, set clear boundaries and make sure you protect sensitive data from SNAKES. SNAKES are also known for their ability to strike at a moment’s notice, so you need to watch them. The best way to do this is to have a clear plan and be prepared for anything. Finally, don’t forget that SNAKES are also very fast, so make sure you’re always one step ahead of them.
  • 13.
  • 14. The HORSE is a remarkable and brilliant creature with a nearly 360-degree field of vision and lightning-fast reflexes. These qualities make them fantastic strategic thinkers, but they can be challenging to work with. HORSEs are driven by efficiency and speed, meaning their first instinct is to optimise every process and eliminate any inefficiencies. But while this is great for productivity, it can also result in a lack of innovation and creativity. Therefore, it is crucial to have a clear plan and give HORSEs specific goals to work towards to balance these needs. Happy to sleep standing up, HORSEs are known for their endurance and stamina. But while they can go the distance, they can also be hot-headed and impatient. So the key to working with HORSEs is to give them clear direction and plenty of time to complete their tasks.

  • 16. As anyone who has worked with COWs can attest, these hardworking professionals are inflexible and stubborn. But what many people don’t realise is that COWs bring years of valuable experience and knowledge to the table, making them an essential part of any team. Whether sniffing out lies or eagerly consuming complex data, COWs strive to disrupt the status quo and push innovation forward. With their wide visual field of 330° and almost an all-around view, COWs are always looking for new insights and ideas. In addition, their natural life expectancy of around twenty years only emphasises their dedication and determination to succeed in their careers. And despite their reputation for being notoriously picky eaters, COWs have a powerful sense of smell, allowing them to track down important information quickly. Overall, these hardworking professionals are essential contributors to any organisation or team, bringing intellectual curiosity and tenacity wherever they go. So the next time you see a COW stomping around your office, remember that they’re not just blindly following the herd. Instead, COWs are disruptors who will help push your business forward.
  • 17.
  • 18. Despite their loyal and dependable nature, DOGs can sometimes be overly dependent on their colleagues and hesitant to disrupt the status quo. Unfortunately, this tendency often leads them to rely on guesses and assumptions rather than much-needed facts and data when making decisions, leading to problems both inside and outside of the workplace. Their superior sense of smell means that DOGs can pick up on subtle nuances in their environment that many others can’t. As a result, DOGs are invaluable for navigating challenging situations or uncovering valuable insights. However, this trait can also cause them to become overly reliant on instinct rather than critical thinking, making hasty and sometimes incorrect assumptions about complex issues. In addition, DOGs tend to struggle with certain types of physical exertion due to their unique physiology. For example, they cannot sweat like we do, making it more challenging to cool down during intense stress or pressure. Likewise, they have been known to have difficulty keeping up with high- speed tasks such as swimming or competing with other animals in a race. However, despite these limitations, DOGs continue to be an invaluable asset in the business world. They can bring innovative ideas and problem-solving approaches to any organisation. So the next time you meet a DOG on the job, remember that while they may sometimes rely on guesses and assumptions, they also bring an incredible amount of intelligence, energy, and drive to help your team succeed.

  • 20. No one doubts the power, intelligence, and tenacity of TIGERS. These ambitious professionals always take the initiative to drive their teams towards success, no matter how difficult or challenging the task. And thanks to their incredible work ethic and exceptional problem-solving skills, they consistently deliver exemplary results regardless of the situation. TIGERs are constantly working to stay ahead of the competition, often taking the initiative to hunt at night for their next leads. Whether tracking down new leads or taking on complex projects, these go-getters never shy away from a challenge and constantly push themselves to achieve success in everything they do. Sadly, only half of the TIGER cubs survive beyond their first year of life, leaving those that are left to feel a strong sense of urgency and drive. And while this intense focus on success may not always be the most conducive to collaboration and team-building, it does allow TIGERS to get more done in less time than many other professionals. A word of warning: a punch from a TIGER may kill you. However, if you can survive this attack (and have a taste for the finer things in life), bear in mind that TIGERs love to swim and play. They can be incredibly loyal companions for those who can weather the storm.

  • 22. CHICKENs are some of the most compassionate and caring team members in the Innovation Zoo. They are always looking out for the well-being of others and making sure everyone is nourished and healthy. Whether it’s bringing in fresh ideas or providing support during difficult times, CHICKENs are always there to help their team succeed. CHICKENs can see the world more colourfully than most of us due to the ability to see ultraviolet light and iridescent hues. They are also a genius, able to form friendships, recognise faces, and have a profound memory. With their holistic outlook and keen foresight, CHICKENs make an excellent company for any team that values creativity, innovation, and a deep understanding of its inner workings. CHICKENs love to play and have a strong sense of fun, but they also work hard and are fiercely loyal to their team. Just be warned: if you cross a CHICKEN, they will never forget it, and they get pretty upset when a team member leaves the roost.

  • 24. As the king or queen of the jungle, LIONS are natural-born leaders with a regal presence that commands respect and admiration from others. In addition, the male LIONS have magnificent manes that tell a story of their lineage in leadership. Despite their lofty position, these ambitious individuals don’t forget the importance of teamwork and live in the pride of their close friends and family. With their keen senses and ability to hunt in any weather, LIONS are natural- born predators that can spot potential prey from miles away. And once they’ve caught an animal, they’re not afraid to take on even the most enormous, most intimidating beasts with nothing but raw determination and strength. But don’t let their energetic nature fool you – CATs are incredibly clever and talented individuals who excel at problem-solving and exploring new ideas. CATs can be pretty independent despite their energy, preferring to work alone or with a small group of trusted team members rather than in large, noisy teams. They are, after all, genetically 95.6% TIGER. CATs can be sourpusses, but they are also some of the most loving and loyal creatures you’ll ever meet. When they’re not curled up on the beanbag in the breakout room taking a nap, they enjoy playing with their favourite toy or chasing down a pesky MOUSE. Furthermore, with the ability to vary its sleeping habits by the environment and produce up to 100 droppings per day, the MOUSE is an essential member of any team. So if you’re looking for a reliable and hardworking teammate that can adapt to any situation, look no further than the humble MOUSE.

Often the loudest voice in the room, GORILLAS are relentless leaders striving for excellence – even if they don’t consistently achieve it. GORILLAs are often found at the top of the totem pole in their respective fields, but they tend to be more talk than action. While they are great at coming up with ideas and motivating others to achieve results, they often lack the follow-through to see those ideas through to fruition - they’re more interested in eating all day and napping in the sun than actually doing the work. Often relatively isolated, GORILLAS can be found in their natural habitat of the boardroom or the corner office.

  • 56. Why is it that some people, no matter how much they achieve, feel the need to take unnecessary risks that could jeopardise everything in the whole company?; this is the question that has puzzled psychologists for years. The TURTLE is a perfect example of this phenomenon. These creatures are known for taking unnecessary risks and often result in them getting hurt or even killed. But why do they do it? One theory is that TURTLEs crave the attention and admiration of their peers. They want to be seen as brave and daring, so they take risks that other people wouldn’t dream of taking; this can lead to some impressive feats, but it also means that TURTLEs are more likely to get themselves into trouble. Lingering is another of the TURTLE’s defining characteristics. They are often reluctant to leave a safe and comfortable place, even when it is clear that there is no reason to stay; this can lead to them missing out on good sales opportunities or, worse, getting stuck in dangerous situations.

But when it comes actually to selling these ideas, they are practically useless. OCTOPUSes are always coming up with new and innovative ideas. Still, they have a hard time executing them because they are so focused on the theoretical aspects of their beliefs that they don’t bother actually to learn how to sell them. As a result, their thoughts often never see the light of day. However, once the OCTOPUS has a bright idea, they will stick with it for years, trying to perfect it. If you are working with an OCTOPUS, it is essential to remember that they need plenty of support to execute their ideas. Without this support, their creativity will go to waste. You’ll find that the OCTOPUS typically will hold a leadership position in an organisation due to their creative ability to come up with new ideas.

  • 60. Hands up: who knows a PIG? We all know at least one in our lifetimes, and they’re usually pretty easy to spot. PIGs are the type of people who are content with their lot in life and have no genuine desire to improve or change things. They’re happy just pottering around and doing the same thing day in, day out. They are stuck in a rut, rolling in the mud. PIGs tend to be poor leaders because they’re not interested in growth - either for themselves or for their team. So, unfortunately, they’re often resistant to change and new ideas, stifling innovation and progress. If you’re working with a PIG, it’s important to remember that they need to be given plenty of space to do their own thing. Trying to force them out of their comfort zone will only make them resistant to change. Instead, focus on helping them see the value in growth and development - both for themselves and the team. Once they understand this, you’ll find that they’re much more open to new ideas and willing to embrace change.

  • 62. The CHIMP is always calculating the return on investment for every situation. They want to know the most impactful use of their time and resources. If something isn’t going to produce the results they want, they’re not interested. They’d instead be picking low-hanging fruit - the things that will give them the most significant return with the least effort - or counting beans. That’s not to say that CHIMPs don’t invest in long-term projects, but they’re always looking for ways to increase the ROI; this can be good or bad, depending on how you look. On the one hand, CHIMPs are very efficient and quickly get results. But, on the other hand, their laser focus on ROI can sometimes lead them to miss out on opportunities. So if you’re working with a CHIMP, it’s essential to make sure that they understand the full scope of the project and its potential impact. Help them see beyond the immediate ROI in dollar terms and consider the long-term benefits. With their help, you can achieve great things - but only if you can get them to see the big picture.

  • 64. We saw lots of OSTRICHes during COVID lockdown, didn’t we? People who only saw the pandemic results in hindsight and did nothing to prepare for it or protect themselves. Sticking their heads deep into the sand, OSTRICHes are often in denial about the reality of a situation. They don’t like to face facts or take responsibility for their choices. And when things go wrong, they always seem to be the last ones to know; this can be frustrating for those around them, who often have to deal with the consequences of the OSTRICH’s poor choices. But it’s important to remember that OSTRICHes are usually well-meaning and simply don’t like to face complex problems head-on. If you’re working with an OSTRICH, try to be patient and help them see the situation for what it is. Once they accept responsibility, they can usually be counted on to take corrective action. But if you’re not careful, their denial and avoidance may cause more harm than good.

They want to see their protégés succeed - and sometimes, they can be too hard on them; this can lead to frustration and disappointment, both for the MONKEY and the people they’re trying to help.
