Prevent aims to reduce the risk of terrorism in the UK by stopping people from being drawn into extremism or terrorism. It works with several agencies including police, local authorities, and educational institutions. People are encouraged to recognize changes in behavior or ideology that could indicate radicalization, share concerns with authorities, and report any issues. Referrals under Prevent in the North West region are highest in certain areas and relate mainly to Islamist extremism and extreme right wing concerns. During the pandemic, there are fears of increased terrorist recruiting and certain groups claiming lockdown violations. Individuals are advised to report any concerns to college staff or local safeguarding teams.
