SETTING THE SCENE
And then there were four.
With resounding victories in Round 1 of the IFFL post-season, Mexico’s #3 Lonely Star and the UK’s #5 Men of Steel earned the right to
advance to the Semi-Final Round to face the league’s top-2 teams,namelythe USA’s #1 Mighty Cyclones and China’s #2 Jaymin.Here
is a look at both of this week’s single-elimination matchups…
#3 LONELY STAR (9-4-0) AT #2 JAYMIN (9-4-0)- Both teams have had their fair share of ups and downs. After starting the 2020
campaign 6-0-0, Lonely Star dropped 4 of their last 7 games to close things out. For the Jaymin, they were hanging on by a thread at
the halfway mark of the season with a 4-3 record, with all 3 losses coming in consecutive weeks (5, 6, 7). Still, they were able to finish
out strong,winning 5 of their last 6. Statistically, Lonely Star ranked 2nd in points, 2nd in combined touchdowns, 2nd in passing TDs,
and they tied 2nd for most rushing TDs. Oddlyenough, in their 4 losses, they failed to score triple-digit points, with the last two coming
againstteams who ended up with losing records. The Jaymin ranked in the lower half of the league in terms of total TDs (67, 8th) and
passing touchdowns (20, 10th). They also struggled against +.500 teams, dropping 2 of 5 in that category. Where Lonely Star has
excelled is at running back,headlined by NFL rushing leader Derrick Henry and rookie sensation Jonathan Taylor. Having the QB/WR

combo of Russell Wilson and Tyler Lockett has certainly helped, too. The Jaymin have capitalized off of very good, but not totally great
players, specifically Chubb, Sanders, Metcalf, Ridley, and returning former-Pro Bowl tight end Zack Ertz. Talent and point totals have
not really been an issue for either team.The lack of consistencyhas.You mightas well flip a coin to decide who will come out on top of
this game because itcould easily,and probably will,come down to a single turnover or perhaps even a missed field goal. Wouldn’t that
be nice?
#5 MEN OF STEEL (7-6-0) AT #1 MIGHTY CYCLONES (12-1-0)- For the Mighty Cyclones, this game is about redemption. Their only
loss of the season was at the hands of these very same Men of Steel. For the Men of Steel, they are hoping lightening will strike twice
by beating this year’s #1 team for a second time,and by doing so,advancing to World Bowl VI. In defense ofthe Mighty Cyclones’ loss,
they were without KC’s Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce in leu of their bye week. But this time, they are in the starting lineup, fired up and
ready to go. Where the Mighty Cyclones have a significant edge over the Men of Steel is at wide receiver, with players like Hill, Diggs,
Kupp, and AJ Brown at their disposal. Both teams are dead-even at the tight end position. The Men of Steel boast Waller and
Hockenson, who rank 2nd and 3rd, whereas the Mighty Cyclones field Kelce (1st) and Tonyan (5th). Where both teams have an
abundance of talent at quarterback, wide receiver and tight end, their respective running back positions have long been thin, thus
inconsistency has been rearing its ugly head for much of the season. The Men of Steel have been without Christian McCaffrey for
nearly all of 2020, yet they reshuffled their starting backs effectively enough to create just enough points that generated just enough
wins to make the post-season. For example, with exception of weeks 10 and 11, the Men of Steel did not have the same starting
running back lineup in back-to-back weeks since Week 4. Just about the same can be said for the Mighty Cyclones, whose most
featured and consistent starting-running back has been Kareem Hunt. Everybody else have been expendable, interchangeable parts.
Even though the Mighty Cyclones are a huge favorite, history and conventional wisdom says the results of this game could easily go
either way.
