Northern Lights at The Pulse, 27.02.14
(U. Dance Youth Dance England Event at Washington
Art Centre)
Pulse celebrates the best in youth dance across
the region, and provide groups with the
opportunity to perform in a professional space, be
inspired, see each other’s work and acknowledge
the talent of young creators and performers.
We are privileged to host the event for the
Sunderland / Durham area. The events offers the
opportunity of youth dance progression routes;
Groups of young people aged 11 to 19 (and
disabled young people up to the age of 24) can
opt to be part of a selection process to represent
the North East at the Dance City Regional Pulse
Platform which follows the Pulse events and then
at National level as U.Dance 2014 hosts a
celebration festival in Nottingham in June. Join
the celebrations and come and see the dancers of
the future.

Review
The 57th
AGM of KFA Moves North East Region took place at The Durham Free School,
Gilesgate on 22nd
March. Joan Holmes, Vice-President, opened the meeting by thanking the teachers
(Mandy Wardle for the training session, and Sue Watson, Sharon Batty and Ethel Ramsey for the keep
fit sessions). Thanks also, to Christine Chapman and helpers for the afternoon tea, and the sellers of the
tickets and raffle tickets.
Lynne Casey, Chair, gave a comprehensive report covering all our regional, national, and branch
activities over the past year. It is difficult to pick out anyone in particular, as everyone has done so well,
but among the “stars” are Ivy Purdham, who featured with Diversity on Sky in “The Town That Danced”,
and also Youth Moves (Northern Lights who received a civic award from Chester le Street Council, and
Senior Youth Moves “Spectrum” who performed at Pulse). In addition, both region and branches have
been busy all year raising funds for charities, and also in aid of this year’s KFA national charity the
Macular Society, for which we have raised over £400 so far. Well done! Lynne thanked the Executive
and Training Committee members for their hard work over the year.
Our Treasurer, Nicola Pilmoor, following her first year as Treasurer, gave a very good, clear
explanation and breakdown of the Accounts.
Regarding officer roles, Sylvia Hocking is standing down as Vice-Chair, and Christine Chapman
was elected as the new Vice-Chair. As Marilyn has now become the new National Events Secretary,
she has had to give up the role of Regional Member Liaison Officer (RMLO), which Ann Bayley will now
take on. Following the stepping down of Shirley Cooke at the the previous year’s AGM, Marilyn, in
addition to being Regional Secretary, had been also taking the Minutes, so we still need a Minuting
Secretary – please let us know if you can provide this service for us.
Lynne then informed the meeting of the sad news that Joyce Lambert had recently passed away,
at the age of 93.
Following the AGM, everyone was treated to a lovely solo performance by Rebecca Kennedy. Rebecca,
who started attending Christine’s classes at the age of 11, is now in the Young Adults team, and is also
on the Chester le Street Committee.
Winner of Grace Taylor Membership Trophy –
Darlington
Over the year, 6 branches increased their membership, with an
overall increase in 18 new members. This was good news
indeed. But the winner, with an individual percentage increase
of 24.4%, was Darlington, who last won in 1999. Judith
Cossavella, Regional Membership Registrar, was delighted to
present the trophy to Heather Towers, Chair of KFA Moves
Darlington, who accepted on behalf of the branch. Heather
reported later: "It was a great pleasure to accept the Grace
Taylor Trophy on behalf of Darlington Branch members, it held
pride of place at our Class Rally".

Winner of Volunteer Recognition Award for Teacher
– Sue Watson
Regional Chair, Lynne Casey, presented the Award to
Sue Watson. “Sue is has been a valued member and
teacher for many years, leading many regional keep fit
sessions. She is a fun-loving and happy person, and has
been an inspiration for fellow teachers. She is sadly
retiring from teaching and will be greatly missed, but
will still be an active member and deserves this award
100%”.
SHININING STARS !
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Winner of Volunteer Recognition Award for
Member – Carol Yeomans
Vice-President, Joan Holmes, presented the Award
to Carol Yeomans, and expressed her thanks
touchingly.
“Carol has been a member for 23 years, and has
always participated fully in the life of the KFA.
Although she trained to be a teacher, she is not
active at the movement, but has been at the heart
things as both a regional and branch committee
member, having previously been North East
Treasurer, and now Chair of Sunderland branch.
Carol has performed in many teams at branch,
regional and national level, including North East
teams, National Festival teams, and Championship
teams. She has a bright and bubbly personality,
reliable and is always ready to help, and carries on
despite having gone through breast cancer a few
years ago. She supported our Chair, Lynne Casey,
through recent illness, and is always there for all
her friends.” As Carol accepted the award, she
thanked everyone – her “keep fit family” – very
much.
Winner of Volunteer Recognition Award for Committee Member – Doris Emmerson
Doris has been a KFA member for over 55 years. She is also a teacher. She has been a member of
Durham branch committee for over 35 years, also in the capacity of Treasurer, and currently as
President. As Doris could not attend the AGM, Marjorie James accepted the award on her behalf, and
was later presented with it in Durham

National News
The following information is taken from the latest issue of the KFA National Bulletin, the full version of
which is available to download from the Teacher Resource area under the publications folder.
KFA FESTIVAL
National Festival Secretary, Angela Freeman, requests that you do not ask for specific seat numbers but
only the actual areas, and Angela will allocate the seats. We have almost sold out our allocation of circle
seats but there are plenty available in other areas. You can also order direct from the Symphony Hall.
However, these orders will cost you an extra £2.50. We have also sent a number of application forms to
Teachers and a supply to each region for our teachers and members who do not have access to the
National website. Latest update on tickets that are left: Front Stalls - 47 left, Mid Stalls - Sold out, Rear
Stalls - 28, Circle - 11. Please bear in mind that availability is reducing all the time. However, there are a
few more seats available if you ring the Symphony Hall direct. As this is our first visit to the Symphony
Hall, some of our members are a little unsure of the layout. The Terrace seats are a fabulous view and the
upper circle is also a great view, as it is not much higher than the circle. There is a Grand Tier, but that is
not for sale and is for the performers only. Seats in the stalls are also quite good. However, we do
understand you may be concerned about having to look up at the performers, so we are not selling the
first few rows. Hope this information helps you with your choices. Latest …We have asked for more
tickets to sell as we have almost sold out of our first allocation and we have been allocated another 200
tickets to sell. Some of the tickets are for the front stalls but most are for the Upper Circle and although
this sounds very high up and far away, it isn’t. The views from these seats are excellent. If you haven’t
already bought your ticket for what will be a fantastic show, please do apply to our Festival Secretary,
Mrs Angela Freeman, 2 Tendergreen View, Tewsbury, Gloucestershire. GL20 5FP.
NATIONAL CHARITY
We shall be presenting a cheque to our chosen National Charity “The Macular Society” at our National
Festival, so please continue with your fundraising events, large and small. Even loose change collected in
your classes can make a difference. Since we have been involved with the “Macular Society”, it is
astonishing to hear how many people are suffering from this disease within our midst. So, well done
everyone and please keep the cheques coming in.
MEMBERSHIP ISSUES
We have been able to keep the membership fee at the same rate for the last three years, even though
Regional reps at last year’s meeting were agreeable to a small raise in fees. Unfortunately, as costs
continue to rise, we have no alternative this year but to increase the fee by a small amount just to try and
keep the ongoing commitments to the regions at the same level. The 2014/2015 membership fee therefore
will be Early Bird £21, and from 1st
Sept £23.
CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015
We have decided to move the date to the 9th
and 10th
May 2015, and for the venue we have eventually
settled on ”The Mini Albert Hall” in Nottingham. Our new Events Director, Marilyn Laverick, is now in
post and will be the lead person dealing with this project. We wish her well and look forward to a
successful outcome.
THE 100 CLUB
Well, what a success this is looking to be. We have almost 300 contributors, and the prizes are whizzing
their way out to the winners. The draw takes place monthly at an event where we can draw the number
publicly. The profit that we have made so far has been earmarked to pay the website service figure. We
wanted the Regions to be aware that the surplus is not just transferring to reserves but will be used to
benefit the Association.
YOUTH MOVES
Nicola Pilmoor has accepted the role of Youth Moves Director, and will be assisted by Alison Clarke
from EM Region and Angela Stanley from the SC Region. They have started a Newsletter and a
Facebook pag,e and are also keeping the National Board informed. However, what is worrying is that
there is very little input from the Y.M. Teachers to help the group to keep the momentum going. Nicola
has set up another email address Youthmoves@yahoo.com. Can all Youth Moves teachers send a list of
their classes and any events planned for the next six months, together with feedback on the membership
process and any other comments and suggestions, as input from everyone is vital for the future of Youth
Moves. Thank you.

We have had a great evening at the Empire Theatre, watching 3 Modern Jazz Ballets - very exciting
(inspiring) and entertaining - and had an excellent turnout.
We are now looking forward to our next theatre visit to see The Lion King.
On 14th March we had a Social Evening with Quizzes, Wine Raffle, Handbag and Accessories
Sale, and raised £235.51 for the Macular Society....wasn't that good!
Definitely enjoyed by all, especially as the main raffle prize was a Mulberry Handbag!!!
We all wanted to win that!
Looking forward now to a summer of events.

  • 2. 2 Northern Lights at The Pulse, 27.02.14 (U. Dance Youth Dance England Event at Washington Art Centre) Pulse celebrates the best in youth dance across the region, and provide groups with the opportunity to perform in a professional space, be inspired, see each other’s work and acknowledge the talent of young creators and performers. We are privileged to host the event for the Sunderland / Durham area. The events offers the opportunity of youth dance progression routes; Groups of young people aged 11 to 19 (and disabled young people up to the age of 24) can opt to be part of a selection process to represent the North East at the Dance City Regional Pulse Platform which follows the Pulse events and then at National level as U.Dance 2014 hosts a celebration festival in Nottingham in June. Join the celebrations and come and see the dancers of the future. (Taken from the Washington Arts Centre Website) FEET FIRST at the Empire Theatre Consett, 31.03.14 Spectrum Dance started the show. They had loads of attitude and sparkle. Their unison was very "tight"! What a fantastic team you are turning out to be you get better with every performance - well done SPECTRUM DANCE we are so proud of you. Christine x Euphoria Dance This was a dress rehearsal for our November 2013 North East Extravaganza !! They are a fantastic group and most of the girls are in the Birmingham National Festival Team- we train for that on Sundays! Janet Balfour Spectrum Dance with their Charleston routine Northern Lights with their Play Hard routine As well as all this activity, everyone is busy rehearsing for Panorama – including Linda Surtees’ 4-7 yr Youth Moves group, and Judith Stephenson’s Youth Move team from Bamburgh School which we look forward to seeing! Good luck everyone!
  • 3. 3 Review The 57th AGM of KFA Moves North East Region took place at The Durham Free School, Gilesgate on 22nd March. Joan Holmes, Vice-President, opened the meeting by thanking the teachers (Mandy Wardle for the training session, and Sue Watson, Sharon Batty and Ethel Ramsey for the keep fit sessions). Thanks also, to Christine Chapman and helpers for the afternoon tea, and the sellers of the tickets and raffle tickets. Lynne Casey, Chair, gave a comprehensive report covering all our regional, national, and branch activities over the past year. It is difficult to pick out anyone in particular, as everyone has done so well, but among the “stars” are Ivy Purdham, who featured with Diversity on Sky in “The Town That Danced”, and also Youth Moves (Northern Lights who received a civic award from Chester le Street Council, and Senior Youth Moves “Spectrum” who performed at Pulse). In addition, both region and branches have been busy all year raising funds for charities, and also in aid of this year’s KFA national charity the Macular Society, for which we have raised over £400 so far. Well done! Lynne thanked the Executive and Training Committee members for their hard work over the year. Our Treasurer, Nicola Pilmoor, following her first year as Treasurer, gave a very good, clear explanation and breakdown of the Accounts. Regarding officer roles, Sylvia Hocking is standing down as Vice-Chair, and Christine Chapman was elected as the new Vice-Chair. As Marilyn has now become the new National Events Secretary, she has had to give up the role of Regional Member Liaison Officer (RMLO), which Ann Bayley will now take on. Following the stepping down of Shirley Cooke at the the previous year’s AGM, Marilyn, in addition to being Regional Secretary, had been also taking the Minutes, so we still need a Minuting Secretary – please let us know if you can provide this service for us. Lynne then informed the meeting of the sad news that Joyce Lambert had recently passed away, at the age of 93. Following the AGM, everyone was treated to a lovely solo performance by Rebecca Kennedy. Rebecca, who started attending Christine’s classes at the age of 11, is now in the Young Adults team, and is also on the Chester le Street Committee. Winner of Grace Taylor Membership Trophy – Darlington Over the year, 6 branches increased their membership, with an overall increase in 18 new members. This was good news indeed. But the winner, with an individual percentage increase of 24.4%, was Darlington, who last won in 1999. Judith Cossavella, Regional Membership Registrar, was delighted to present the trophy to Heather Towers, Chair of KFA Moves Darlington, who accepted on behalf of the branch. Heather reported later: "It was a great pleasure to accept the Grace Taylor Trophy on behalf of Darlington Branch members, it held pride of place at our Class Rally".
  • 4. 4 Winner of Volunteer Recognition Award for Teacher – Sue Watson Regional Chair, Lynne Casey, presented the Award to Sue Watson. “Sue is has been a valued member and teacher for many years, leading many regional keep fit sessions. She is a fun-loving and happy person, and has been an inspiration for fellow teachers. She is sadly retiring from teaching and will be greatly missed, but will still be an active member and deserves this award 100%”. SHININING STARS ! VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARDS Winner of Volunteer Recognition Award for Member – Carol Yeomans Vice-President, Joan Holmes, presented the Award to Carol Yeomans, and expressed her thanks touchingly. “Carol has been a member for 23 years, and has always participated fully in the life of the KFA. Although she trained to be a teacher, she is not active at the movement, but has been at the heart things as both a regional and branch committee member, having previously been North East Treasurer, and now Chair of Sunderland branch. Carol has performed in many teams at branch, regional and national level, including North East teams, National Festival teams, and Championship teams. She has a bright and bubbly personality, reliable and is always ready to help, and carries on despite having gone through breast cancer a few years ago. She supported our Chair, Lynne Casey, through recent illness, and is always there for all her friends.” As Carol accepted the award, she thanked everyone – her “keep fit family” – very much. Winner of Volunteer Recognition Award for Committee Member – Doris Emmerson Doris has been a KFA member for over 55 years. She is also a teacher. She has been a member of Durham branch committee for over 35 years, also in the capacity of Treasurer, and currently as President. As Doris could not attend the AGM, Marjorie James accepted the award on her behalf, and was later presented with it in Durham
  • 5. 5 National News The following information is taken from the latest issue of the KFA National Bulletin, the full version of which is available to download from the Teacher Resource area under the publications folder. KFA FESTIVAL National Festival Secretary, Angela Freeman, requests that you do not ask for specific seat numbers but only the actual areas, and Angela will allocate the seats. We have almost sold out our allocation of circle seats but there are plenty available in other areas. You can also order direct from the Symphony Hall. However, these orders will cost you an extra £2.50. We have also sent a number of application forms to Teachers and a supply to each region for our teachers and members who do not have access to the National website. Latest update on tickets that are left: Front Stalls - 47 left, Mid Stalls - Sold out, Rear Stalls - 28, Circle - 11. Please bear in mind that availability is reducing all the time. However, there are a few more seats available if you ring the Symphony Hall direct. As this is our first visit to the Symphony Hall, some of our members are a little unsure of the layout. The Terrace seats are a fabulous view and the upper circle is also a great view, as it is not much higher than the circle. There is a Grand Tier, but that is not for sale and is for the performers only. Seats in the stalls are also quite good. However, we do understand you may be concerned about having to look up at the performers, so we are not selling the first few rows. Hope this information helps you with your choices. Latest …We have asked for more tickets to sell as we have almost sold out of our first allocation and we have been allocated another 200 tickets to sell. Some of the tickets are for the front stalls but most are for the Upper Circle and although this sounds very high up and far away, it isn’t. The views from these seats are excellent. If you haven’t already bought your ticket for what will be a fantastic show, please do apply to our Festival Secretary, Mrs Angela Freeman, 2 Tendergreen View, Tewsbury, Gloucestershire. GL20 5FP. NATIONAL CHARITY We shall be presenting a cheque to our chosen National Charity “The Macular Society” at our National Festival, so please continue with your fundraising events, large and small. Even loose change collected in your classes can make a difference. Since we have been involved with the “Macular Society”, it is astonishing to hear how many people are suffering from this disease within our midst. So, well done everyone and please keep the cheques coming in. MEMBERSHIP ISSUES We have been able to keep the membership fee at the same rate for the last three years, even though Regional reps at last year’s meeting were agreeable to a small raise in fees. Unfortunately, as costs continue to rise, we have no alternative this year but to increase the fee by a small amount just to try and keep the ongoing commitments to the regions at the same level. The 2014/2015 membership fee therefore will be Early Bird £21, and from 1st Sept £23. CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 We have decided to move the date to the 9th and 10th May 2015, and for the venue we have eventually settled on ”The Mini Albert Hall” in Nottingham. Our new Events Director, Marilyn Laverick, is now in post and will be the lead person dealing with this project. We wish her well and look forward to a successful outcome. THE 100 CLUB Well, what a success this is looking to be. We have almost 300 contributors, and the prizes are whizzing their way out to the winners. The draw takes place monthly at an event where we can draw the number publicly. The profit that we have made so far has been earmarked to pay the website service figure. We wanted the Regions to be aware that the surplus is not just transferring to reserves but will be used to benefit the Association. YOUTH MOVES Nicola Pilmoor has accepted the role of Youth Moves Director, and will be assisted by Alison Clarke from EM Region and Angela Stanley from the SC Region. They have started a Newsletter and a Facebook pag,e and are also keeping the National Board informed. However, what is worrying is that there is very little input from the Y.M. Teachers to help the group to keep the momentum going. Nicola has set up another email address Youthmoves@yahoo.com. Can all Youth Moves teachers send a list of their classes and any events planned for the next six months, together with feedback on the membership process and any other comments and suggestions, as input from everyone is vital for the future of Youth Moves. Thank you.
