What do the voices of young people sound like? What stories do they tell? What issues do they struggle with? And where do they identify sources of resilience and resistance? Scenarios USA asked 7,000 youth from underserved communities in Chicago, Cleveland and New York City: What's the REAL DEAL about Place & Power? Staff and researchers from Scenarios, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Chicago have conducted an in-depth analysis of youths' stories to identify how marginalized adolescents conceptualize their sense of self in relation to place, power and privilege, and how this influences their identity, sense of agency, and broader health and well-being. Today, we will hear the first findings of that analysis from the people who climbed inside the teenagers' stories. We will discuss what we've learned and how youth voices and perspectives can inform the health and technology fields.

This session is intended for participants to critically reflect on different aspects of their identity (race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religious/spiritual affiliation etc.) and the ways in which these aspects intersect with one another. It provides a safe space to recognize areas of vulnerability as well as privileges, and engage in collective meaning-making of these experiences. The session also includes a discussion around historical policies and social contexts, which reflect structural forms of prejudice. At the end, participants share their perspectives on being cognizant of one’s power and privileges and structural forms of prejudice, while working with communities (especially marginalized populations).

Masculinity was more clearly defined when “men were men,” as the phrase goes. Today, as gender conventions blur, men are formulating more nuanced ideas of what it means to be a man. The household in particular is becoming more gender-neutral as men both embrace a more active role and get pushed into it out of necessity. “The State of Men” examines shifts in male roles, behavior, attitudes and mindsets, focusing on how masculinity is being redefined circa 2013, how men’s role in the home is changing and how men are navigating the new gender order. The report is the result of quantitative, qualitative and desk research conducted by JWTIntelligence throughout the year. For this report, we surveyed 1,000 adults aged 18-plus in the U.S. and the U.K. from April 29-May 2, 2013 using SONAR™, JWT’s proprietary online panel. The report also includes input from experts and influencers in male trends and JWT’s Planning Foresight group in London, as well as JWT planners around the globe, including Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Australia, Spain, Poland, Japan and Thailand. Go to JWTIntelligence.com/trendletters to see the full report, with recommendations for brands and additional data.

There has been much academic debate over the relationship between race and gender as factors in social, political and economic inequality and oppression and whether a race or feminist gender-based framework is most effective for the study and analysis of inequality and oppression. Taking up feminist critiques of patriarchy, liberal feminism for failing to address the experiences and issues confronted by women of colour, anti-racist activism for failing to address the issue of gender, as well as the question of how racism and homophobia intersect we will examine the relationship between race and gender on several levels: Firstly, we will examine the role and significance of gender and sexuality within racist discourses. Secondly, we will examine how race and gender compare, complement one another, differ or conflict as sites of social-political identification, classification, division and struggle, as factors in inequality, as well as frameworks for analysis. Thirdly, we shall look at the ways in which sexualized stereotyping works in the ‘double discrimination’ of racialized women and/or LGBT people. We will engage with several academic debates on the issue and discuss whether gendered race issues could or should be subsumed under an anti-racist or feminist analysis or agenda or remain distinct in a third category, or alternately how the three frameworks and agendas could co-exist and compliment one another for the most effective analysis and fight against different forms of social-political inequality.

Copyright 2002 by Paul Kivel www.paulkivel.com The Costs of Racism to White People1 by P a u l K i v e l WE TEND TO THINK OF RACISM as a problem for people of color and something we should be concerned about for their sake. It is true that racism is devastating to them, and if we believe in justice, equality, and equal opportunity for all, then we should be trying to end it. As we saw in the last sections, racism does produce material benefits for white people. However, the costs of racism to white people are devastating, especially to those of us without the money and power to buffer their effects. They are not the same costs as the day-to-day violence, discrimination, and harassment that people of color have to deal with. Nevertheless, they are significant costs that we have been trained to ignore, deny, or rationalize away. They are costs that other white people, particularly those with wealth, make us pay in our daily lives. It is sobering for us as white people to talk together about what it really costs to maintain such a system of division and exploitation in our society. We may even find it difficult to recognize some of the core costs of being white in our society. For example, one of the costs of assimilating into white mainstream culture is that we are asked to leave behind the languages, foods, music, games, rituals, and expressions that our parents and/or grandparents used. We lose our own “white” cultures and histories. Sometimes this loss leads us to romanticize the richness of other cultures. We have been given a distorted and inaccurate picture of history and politics because the truth about racism has been excluded, the contributions of people of color left out, and the role of white people cleaned up and modified. We also lose the presence and contributions of people of color to our neighborhoods, schools, and relationships. We are given a false sense of superiority, a belief that we should be in control and in authority, and that people of color should be maids, servants, and gardeners and do the less valued work of our society. Our experiences are distorted, limited, and less rich the more they are exclusively or predominantly white. 1 Reprinted from Uprooting Racism: How White People Can Work for Racial Justice. Copyright 2002 by Paul Kivel www.paulkivel.com “The Costs of Racism to White People” page: 2 There are many ways that racism affects our interpersonal relationships. We may have lost relationships with friends, family members, and co-workers to disagreements, fights, and tension over racism. At the same time we may have lost relationships with people of color because the tensions of racism make those relationships difficult to sustain. Racism distorts our sense of danger and safety. We are taught to live in fear of people of color. We are exploited economically by the upper class and unable to fight or even see this exploitation because we are taugh ...

Size separation, or sieving, is a technique to segregate particles by size, vital in pharmaceuticals, food processing, and mining. Methods include sieving (particles pass through mesh sieves), sedimentation (based on settling velocities in fluid), cyclone separation (using centrifugal forces), and filtration (using barriers with specific pore sizes). Applications range from ensuring uniform drug formulations to grading grains and extracting minerals. Size separation offers efficiency, precision, and versatility, making it essential for quality control and consistency across various industries.

The Last Leaf is a short story by the American writer O. Henry (1862-1910) commonly known in the history of American literature as "the author of surprise ending". It tells the story of an old artist who saves the life of a young neighbouring artist, who is seriously ill and dying, by giving her the will to live. O. Henry knew people very well, especially the ordinary people of New York. In his stories you can feel satirical criticism of the American way of life. Most of his short stories are full of warm sympathy for ordinary American people.
