A presentation at the Amman Launch meeting on the role of geospatial science, technology, and application (also known as Geoinformatics) for the Dryland Systems CRP was given by Dr. Chandrashekhar Biradar, Head of the GSU unit at ICARDA. Recent advances in Geoinformatics are increasing spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions, they are increasing computational efficiency and speed and decreasing hardware costs. GIS mapping of CRP areas is useful in understanding the synergy and gaps for implementation as well as impact assessment. Geoinformatics is especially suited to accomplish a range of tasks such as mapping emerging and future land use/land cover trends, cropping patterns, water use, changing demographics and climate change impacts.
