Personal Statement
1. Personal Statement – Calum McCaig
I have always been interested in the science of medicine; particularly at a clinical level focused
especially on haematology. This has been reflected in my degree subject and my chosen
dissertation subject in particular. I chose my university course to gain the theoretical knowledge
and practical skills to further this interest and to pursue a career in the field of my degree.
I am now a hardworking and professional biomedical science student. Iam looking to further
my career in this field. I am good at both working alone and as part of a team and have shown
good leadership skills. These skills have been improved through my group work. The
experiences I have had at university have helped me improve my presenting and communication
skills, which include essay writing and laboratory reports. These tasks also allow me to
demonstrate skills in accurate and precise record keeping, which is integral in the scientific
community. The laboratory experience I have gained has allowed me to follow instructions
carefully and follow laboratory safety procedures in a busy working environment in a safe and
efficient manner.
I have gained skills at university which have improved my scientific knowledge. The
communication skills I have acquired have enabled me to become a more confident person in
myself and in large groups. I have learned to lead teams and to work effectively and safely in a
laboratory environment. I am looking to taking up my career as a biomedical scientist and am
especially interested in haematology which is the reason why I researched this area for my
dissertation which was entitled “Investigation into the Mechanism and Effect of Exogenous
Zinc, Thrombin and Collagen Related Protein Action On Platelets”. Iwould be extremely
grateful if you would give me the opportunity to join your hard working team.
