2. Resources
Pre-production is important for the smooth running of a project. It
is for you to go through final development and organisation for
your project before you start production.
The pre-production tasks you do will depend on your project. You
need to undertake appropriate tasks in order to make your project
work.
A production schedule should be in everyone’s project.
The blue slides are here to give advice. This advice can also be
found in the main lecture. Delete when you don’t need it. Don’t
submit your work with this in.

7. PRE-PRODUCTION
• Style sheet
– Collection of potential choice you could make for your products visuals
(colours, image styles and fonts). Provide some indication of which ones you
will use, where you will use them and reasons why
– This should explore alternatives to everything- don’t just include one
option. Look at several potential aspects to include and reference the ones
you plan to use and why
• Layout Plans
– Potential designs you could do for your product using images, fonts and
colours from style sheet
8. PRE-PRODUCTION Colour schemes:
This is important for
any visual product.
Talk about the options
you have, the
decisions you are
making and relate
your ideas back to
exiting products and
your target audience.
11. Pre-production
What are you making?
I am producing a Leeds United, Football Fanzine, which will focus on a
wide-range of relevant subjects, engaging football fans to the max.
Why?
To give the audience an interesting insight into a potential view of a
different fan, or contrasting opinions which they may or may not agree
with, alongside insightful interviews with other fans releasing exclusive
material.
Who is it for? (Audience)
All Football fans, particularly Leeds United fans.
Where will it appear/on what? (How will audience see it)
It will appear as a physical product, similar to a magazine, with
engaging designs, and professional looking, football related graphic
art.
Reflection:
12. PRE-PRODUCTION
”FLYING THE WHITE FLAG FANZINE” is a Leeds United Inspired Magazine, with
insightful and relevant information every Leeds fan wants to discover.
I aim for this product to be designed to a professional level, printed and made
into a physically copy, with option to download as an animated magazine
being completely accessible as the physical product, along with an audio
version, for the visually impaired who would like to give the articles a listen,
this product really is a must.
Featuring a variety of contrasting articles, the fanzine will include exclusive
interviews with opinionated fans, stories, games, round-ups, reviews, graphic
art and many more.
The reason I have decided to create a football fanzine, is to project my
football knowledge and interest to other fans, whilst discovering things about
the club I had never known, such as fan experiences, events which have took
place, and general history about the club!
13. Pre-production: Style For the style of the Fanzine, I want to
approach it using a technical, and
professional techniques giving it a complex
meaning however ”Simple” and
“Aesthetically pleasing to the eye, engaging
the audience to never become bored or
disengaged.
As the designer of the fanzine, the number
1 priority is ensuring the reader will never
close the booklet without finishing, the
graphic designs and layout may determine
whether the content is read or not.
So, taking this information, I will make
many concepts, and take a public survey at
the specific order, in attempt to find which
works best for the potential audience.
Simplicity, clear text and content
enhancing designs will give the fanzine the
best chance of success.
14. Pre-production: Colour Schemes
Colour Schemes are crucially important when designing, and depending on the featured
article of the fanzine, there will be a design relevant to the subject on the front cover.
Giving different colours for each issue of the Fanzine, will keep engaging the monthly
readers to continue their subscription, knowing they will get different strokes of quality
throughout there is experience with “FLYING THE WHITE FLAG FANZINE”.
Yellow, Dark Blue,
and White are Leeds
United’s Famous
colours, if this wasn’t
part of the colour
scheme, it would be
strange.
If these colours are
used, football fans
may know who the
fanzine is about
before reading.
Leeds United’s
current away kit
consists of dark
green and dark blue,
therefore using
these colours keeps
it relevant to this
season, (Updated), if
it’s a recent issue of
the fanzine the fans
will be engaged as its
what is happening at
the moment
Black, and two
shades of grey
are neutral colour
schemes for all to
use, without
offending any
Leeds fans with
the potential use
of red, or any
colours not
associated with
the club.
15. Pre-production: Content
Content is arguably the most important part of the fanzine, if there is nothing
interesting about anything inside the fanzine, who would want to read it?
Engaging the fans is priority, so the first article will leave a huge stamp on the brand of
the first impression, however before that the will discover the front cover and design.
I will use my graphic design skills on adobe photoshop and illustrator, the create the
front artwork, considering the content inside being relevant to the art, along with all
the colourways matching up also.
For the First article lined up, I discuss an event which took place in Istanbul featuring at
Galatasaray V Leeds, where two Leeds United fans was tragically stabbed and killed.
With no justice received for the family and friends of Chris and Kev, all Leeds fans hold a
huge grudge when there is anything associated with ”Galatasaray”.
So, I discuss both sides of the story featuring a variety of views from all parties involved.
I speak to both, a Leeds fan who went to the game and experienced the atmosphere
after the murders, and a younger Leeds Fan who has experienced the impacts of the
club however not being old enough to remember much from the time it happened due
to his age.
16. Pre-production: Content
For the Second Article, I speak about the Covid-19 crisis impacting the sport, more
specifically, what is football without fans?
All clubs from the bottom of the pyramid right to the top, at the elite level, they
have all been hit with a bomb financially, resulting in many clubs taking different
actions to fight through it and eventually survive.
We experienced Huge EFL Clubs such as Bolton on the brink of extinction, and
Sadly Bury being expelled by the league due to finances and debt.
Fans Paying to watch is one of the main income most clubs rely on to stay afloat.
However, football without fans isn’t only about the financial crisis, it will impact
things such as, concentration levels of players, decision making of referee’s and
officiating bodies, suspense towards the later stage of games, the drive and soul of
a team fueling off the fans energy, and the opposite, the fall, from overachieving
teams who would generally crumble under the pressure and added impacts of
performing bady
17. Pre-production: Content
The third and final article is discussing the most recent uproar in football,
being the “Super League” introduced by ex-president, Josep Maria
Bartomeu.
The Spaniard invested 5 billion pound in attempt to get ”The biggest clubs in
Europe to take part”.
The whole point of the current European competition in the “Champions
League, it allows under established teams to get to the top and compete
with the elite, on the “Super League” Concept, it will be the ”Top 6” to be
involved and nobody else.
Arsenal, who currently sit in 9th, only 2 points ahead of 11th (19/04/21) are
considered a top 6 team although they are performing better than the
underrated teams such as West Ham and Leicester, by a long way too.
In this article I will continue to discuss many more points, weighing up both
the positive and negative arguments.
18. Pre-production: Marketing
Providing all goes ahead I plan to make a small commercial of the fanzine, being a simple way
to market and let the audience know in a short and effective way why this Fanzine is the one
to have.
I will design artistic posters, in attempt to find my audience reading the fanzine.
I will make a physical copy, which allows me to promote via word of mouth, being the most
effective marketing technique.
19. Pre-production: Audience
The audience can be all football fans, as my Fanzine
features views from all sides of the story, and articles
aren’t always related to Leeds United.
With that said, a lot of the Fanzine is related to Leeds
United, therefore this is a must for all Leeds fans, as
passionate fans of Leeds United we have tendencies to
consume our entire time speaking or hearing about the
club, of different stories, so why not have a read and take
an insightful view of a featured topic every month?
22. Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
Designs may not work with colours etc make several concepts to deicide which works
best
Information could be wrong double check to make it official
Arguments could be one sided or offensive make a balanced argument to keep it fair
Printer could stop working or could be the
wrong way to produce the content
Research the best possible way to approach
printing
computer could crash when editing without
saved content
update and keep on top
