  2. 2. Introduction Breast cancer screening is the medical screening of asymptomatic, apparently healthy women for breast cancer in an attempt to achieve an earlier diagnosis. The assumption is that early detection will improve outcomes. Breast cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms of the disease. It can also be used if you have a lump or other sign of breast cancer.
  3. 3. Risk of Breast Cancer  Female gender and with advantage.  Early menstruation.  Late menopause.  First child after the age of 30.  Prolonge hormone therapy.
  4. 4. SYMPTOMS  Lump in the breast or armpit.  Change in size or shape of breast.  Nipple distortion.  Bloody nipple discharge.  Skin dimpling, skin redness/rash.  Skin ulcer & blister that does not heal.  Pain in the breast that travels to armpit and neck.

Reduces the risk of dying from breast cancer  Reduces the risk of dying from breast cancer Of 1,000 women who have a mammogram every 2 years for 20 years, 7 deaths are prevented  Reduces the risk of having to undergo chemotherapy Screening often allows for the detection of cancers at an early stage of development. Treatment is then possible without chemotherapy.

Disadvantages  Periods of waiting and anxiety when additional examinations are requiredAlmost half the women who participate in the screening for 20 years 453 in 1,000 have at least one additional examination.This represents 156 more women than in the 1,000 who do not participate in the screening.  Possible overdiagnosis Of 77 breast cancer diagnoses, 10 would be cases of overdiagnosis.
