at a shelter, and more than half were denied protection orders (source)

WHAT TO DO WHEN ABUSE HAPPENS
If you feel that you are unsafe, call 911 or contact KSU Safety (470-578-6666), and they can
help remove you from that situation. Contact someone you know and trust to be with you while
you wait.
If you are in immediate danger, call 911 first.

If you need further assistance, call 800-656-4673 to be connected with a trained sexual assault
service provider. When you call, you will be routed to a local RAINN affiliate based on the first
six digits of your phone number. Cell phone callers will have the option to enter a zip code to
more accurately locate the nearest sexual assault provider.
By calling a RAINN affiliate, you will get access to a range of free services, such as confidential,
judgement-free support, support in finding a local health facility that offers services such as
sexual assault forensic exams, local resources for short-term and long-term support, info about
laws in your area, and basic info on medical concerns. 24/7 help can be found on
online.rainn.org.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU REPORT
When you meet with an advocate know that you may share as much or as little information as
you would like to share. You will learn about common reactions to sexual assault, relationship
violence, harassment, trauma, and other forms of abuse. You will discuss resources for medical
care, and learn about your rights and reporting options. You may report the instance to the
University as well as through the police. The advocate is available to help you through this
process.
You should expect to discuss how you can take care of yourself and heal through counseling,
support groups, stress reduction, and other resources.Your case may affect school and you
may discuss with the advocate how you can work by contacting student success as well as
professors.
Your advocate should work with you to create a safety plan, and discuss protection orders. With
them, you should learn about other resources in the community, and at Kennesaw State should
you need them.
HOW TO SUPPORT A SURVIVOR
If you know a survivor who needs your support, there are many things you can do to help them
process what happened as well as feel safe and empowered. Some of these things include:
● Listening to and believing what they have to say
● Maintaining confidentiality
● Being patient with however long it takes them to heal
● Following up with them about how they are feeling
● Encouraging them to seek medical attention and/or report the assault, but allowing them
to have the decision-making power
● Assuring them that the assault was not their fault
● Helping them locate a counselor if they are interested in counseling
Supporting a survivor can be hard to do, so if you know somebody who has been assaulted and
are helping them through their experience, it is important to make sure you are also helping

yourself. Seeing a counselor, doing things that are unrelated to the survivor you are helping,
and letting the survivor know if you need to take a break from talking to them are all things that
can help you be in a better position to support survivors in your life.
