Editor's Notes
Hi! I will be arguing a position involving the topic of SNAP.
First, I will be explaining what SNAP is and how a person can be qualify for it. SNAP stands for supplemental nutrition assistance program. It was formerly called “Food stamps”. It gives people with lower income an allowance every month to afford nutritious food. The picture above is a chart that shows the financial criteria to qualify for SNAP. Another requirement is to be a U.S. citizen.
https://www.benefits.gov/benefit/1280
The main problem is the new food stamp rule that was proposed by the President, it states that individuals with no dependents must work at least 20 hours in order to be qualify for the SNAP benefits. People who have a disability, children or are an elderly will receive the benefits with no changes. By doing this, the government hope that people will begin to work more so the unemployment rate will decrease which would stabilize the economy.
The concern with the new rule to cut the SNAP recipients is that whether or not it will help the individuals with lower income. According to a CNN article, more than 36 million people are receiving SNAP benefits. The new rule is trying to encourage those with benefits to start working due to the high amount of people who do not have a job while still receiving SNAP. This can result in nearly 700,000 people to lose their benefits
People are struggling financially, and the new rule makes it harder for some. It is not whether or not someone is able to work but its about whether or not they can get a job. Some areas have a high unemployment rate so many can’t get a job due to that. Also, sometimes people can not work enough hours even though they might be able to. There are factors that can not be controlled by an individual so therefore their SNAP benefits shouldn’t be taken away.
College students are also involved since they are independents who can receive SNAP. They need to work and go to school in order to qualify for the benefits. It can be difficult to maintain the balance. These rules only apply to students who are enrolled less than half-time.
So the issue. People who don’t live with their children can’t claim them as dependents still have to meet the requirement to qualify for the benefits. An example from the Atlantic news, talks about a father of four kids who lost his job and was receiving SNAP benefits was using all of it to just feed his kids. The kids lives with their mother so technically he couldn’t claim them as dependents. There are many people with similar experiences so cutting SNAP will really harm the individual instead of helping.
With the pandemic in 2020, many had been laid off their job. They are able to work but under the circumstances, they are not allow to work. Those people who can’t work might not be qualify for SNAP.
The new rule is supposedly there so that the government can save some money. Since many people are relying on the benefits, cutting some people out will help the government financially. But the result will not be favor for people since they will be losing some benefits. This can cause people to not be able to afford food.
The President wants to replace SNAP with a program called “Blue Apron”. Instead of receiving money to buy food, people would be receiving the food directly. Blue apron would be sending meal kits to individuals. I think it would be better for people to receive the food from Blue Apron and the benefits from SNAP to help those who are really in need. SNAP is helpful but it can not cover every meal that the person will have.
Creating more job openings can also help reduce the number of people relying on SNAP. It can also satisfy what the government wants to save money. Lowing the required 20 hours a week can also help a lot of people.
The minimum wage in Massachusetts is currently $12.75. Increasing it will be beneficial to those with low income.
