Students’ use of technologies for learning
“As students look to their lecturers for
clues as to how to use technology tools
for learning, many lecturers are unaware
of the potential of these tools…”
“As the technology matures the main issue
becomes managing students’ comfort and
familiarity with using tools/platforms.”

16. *Participants in 2010 conference workshop: Developing students’ information management skills to match the 21st century internet; 18 respondents
Students need training / support
1/3 offered some web2.0 related training
Key challenges:
Keeping themselves up-to-date with technologies
& their benefits
Making staff & students aware of usefulness /
relevance
Survey of HE / FE Librarians*
17. Staff Development
General skills
LSE Digital Literacy Programme for staff
Sell the benefits not the technology
Think local: departments, courses
Flexible
Lead by example
Use of Web2.0 tools by students & staff, digital / information literacy, research / study skills, support by libraries, lectures and learning support.
Wider application – teaching in ODL; supporting campus-based students
Explain web2.0
Broader definition used by many
Narrower: PARTICIPATION / SOCIAL - Participatory aspect of web2.0 – social, communicative especially important to ODL
Content focused, even when using “web2.0” tools
Blogs
Social Bookmarling to provide collections
Content Driven
Traditional Guides
Sometimes ODL focused but not always…
Some “web2.0”
Blogs
Social Bookmarling to provide collections
Online Tutorials
Media sites
screencasts
Elements of Web2.0 Delicious is the engine behing it but this is not “social” bookmarking…
US Association of Research Libraries (predominantly universities)
First one – 2 campus based UK unis UGs
TALL - VLE
Jones, 5 UK universities
Students weak at Critical thinking, referencing properly, Information management
Mixed picture BUT overall:
Limited use by students of web2.0 (beyond Facebook)
1) For studies
2) Of more ‘academic’ web2.0 tools
3) Even when embedded in curriculum
Making it more participative / communicative; more of an active role for students & staff.
e.g Personal Learning Networks – my use of Twitter.
Real SOCIAL bookmarking
Social networking for learning – e.g. Twitter, Friendfeed, Facebook.
Collaborative exercises – e.g. students collaborate to produce screencast??
Feeds – google reader, sharing, commenting…
Small changes to make exiting practice more web2.0
Making it more participative
Real SOCIAL bookmarking
Social networking for learning – e.g. Twitter, Friendfeed, Facebook.

Cultural / Pedagogical – participative is not how courses are taught. Didactic delivery & independent study is the main mode teaching staff are familiar with. Use of technology reflects that.

Change
Students & staff don’t make much use
Don’t understand the potential

Nearly all (1 not sure!) felt students needed training & support
7 run sessions on Web2.0 tools /services for students
Staff development is Key.
Students need help
Helps needs to come from Uni staff
Staff need help – start with basic skills
Must focus on uses – new ways of teaching as much as the technologies
Same as always but perhaps more so for ODL – information literacy in the curriculum
