 The Habits of
        ^
Highly Effective

Entrepreneurs
Why do some
social
entre preneurs
succeed...

 while others
         fail?
Does it have to do
      with their...
ideas, timing, luck or team?

   YES. YES. YES. YES.
But those factors all depend on
something more fundamental...
more invisible...
our habits!
First we make our habits,
then our habits make us.
Here, then, are
the six habits of
highly effective
    SOCIAL
entrepreneurs...

     ☛

    Social Entrepreneurs Develop
        S OLUTIONS
        S
They don’t just
“make some noise”
and ask for
donations and
signatures.
They come up with
new solutions...

especially those that
BREAK PATTERNS
and change systems.
And they do this
over and over again.
They’re always asking
“How can things
  be better?”
"Social entrepreneurs are not
content just to give a sh or
                              teach how to sh.

They will not rest until
they have revolutionized
the shing industry."

Ashoka founder Bill Drayton

    Social Entrepreneurs Measure
        O UTCOMES
        O
They know the difference between

    Outputs vs. Outcomes

your effort - your impact -
number of widgets how the world is
    you sell better
If you’re
helping people,
        are they
      healthier,
richer, happier,
more skilled or
educated, etc.?
If you’re helping the
environment, is it
cleaner, more protected,
more biodiverse, etc.?
They measure outcomes and
 manage their success by
      OUTCOMES...
       not outputs.
“If you can't measure it,
  you can't manage it.

 If you can't manage it,
   you can't deliver it.

  If you can't deliver it,
you have no social value.”
         David Hunter
Nonpro t management consultant

   Social Entrepreneurs Establish
        C hange Models
        C
They know SOLUTIONS don’t
automatically lead to OUTCOMES

          S≠O
Change requires PROCESS,
not just PRODUCT.
So you need to
establish and
validate
change models...

your formulas for
change.
S + A + B + C... = O

            And it needs to be
      repeatable and scalable.
If you can’t explain it simply,
you don’t understand it well enough.

    Social Entrepreneurs Practice
            I nclusion
            I
They’ve learned the hard way
to create change WITH not FOR.
They design and implement
solutions WITH input and
involvement of beneficiaries.
Grameen Bank

                                 They even involve
                                   beneficiaries as
                                          owners,
                                    employees and
                                       evangelists.

    Invisible Children’s ME
                            ND
Because the rules of
 INNOVATION
  have changed.
If you want to go fast, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together.

   Social Entrepreneurs Leverage
            A ssets
            A
They know investors don’t fund
           IDEAS.

     They fund RESULTS.
So the key to initial
success is not
BUSINESS PLANS.

It’s your own
BOOTSTRAPS.
Learn to leverage existing
        ASSETS...
People Skills

            Assets

Resources Networks

      Organizations
Use success to build
      more success.

    That’s the way
  the world works.
Do what you can
with what you have
  where you are.
   ~ Teddy Roosevelt ~

        Social Entrepreneurs Think
           L ong-term
           L
Real change stands
  the test of time.

That means solutions
    need to last.
And they need to be sustainable...

 financially ecologically
Social entrepreneurs are always
   thinking YEARS ahead...

  What solutions do we need
10 or 20 years into the future?
If you think in terms of a year,
          plant a seed;

if in terms of 10 years,
           plant trees;

if in terms of 100 years,
        teach the people.

          ~ Confucius ~
