What is our ROLE in debate?
The aim of a debate speech is to … PERSUADE people to agree with your side of the motion

Listening & responding Arguments may be challenged in several different ways: Is it true? Do they have evidence? “We disagree because there is no evidence that mobile phones damage your health” Is there no evidence for the other side? “The other side has not taken into account the fact that a vegetarian diet actually contains less vitamin B12” Is their evidence reliable? “Their evidence is based on one person’s story, which doesn’t prove that homework is bad for your eyes”

Voice Speak in a way that feels natural for you – you don’t need to put on a special voice Don’t speak too fast, and try to vary the speed that you speak at Make sure you use pauses, especially between different parts of your speech – don’t feel you need to say “umm” or “err” to fill the gap. Speak loudly enough that everyone in the room can hear you, but not too loudly of you are in a small room! Vary the way you speak by using different tones: are you surprised? angry? disappointed? excited?
