THE GLOBE
LATITUDES AND
LONGITUDES
DAY 1
PRE TEST
1. What is the true shape of the earth?
2. What is a globe?
3. The 0° Meridian is also known as___________
_____.
4. What do you mean by latitudes and longitudes?
5. How many hemisphere does our earth has?
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
⮚ To differentiate Globe and
map.
⮚ To define the northern and
Southern Hemisphere
KEY TERMS
• Axis
• Equator
• Greenwich Meantime
• Latitude
• Local time
• Longitude
• Poles
• Prime Meridian
• Standard Time
OUR EARTH
• GLOBE IS THE REPRESENTATION OF THE EARTH. IT IS SMALLER MODEL OF OUR EARTH.
• WHAT ALL THINGS CAN YOU LOCATE ON A GLOBE?
The Earth rotates
or spins on its own
axis. It is inclined
to an angle of 23
½.
The pole pointing
towards the pole
star is called
north pole.
Opposite side –
south pole
NORTH OF EQUATOR - NORTH
HEMISPHERE.
BELOW THE EQUATOR –
SOUTH HEMISPHERE.
NAME THE IMAGINARY LINE
THAT DIVIDES THE EARTH
INTO NORTH AND SOUTH.
Prime Maridian

ACTIVITY
Task 1
Discussion- “Globe is the replica of the
Earth”.
Task 2
List out the countries that fall under the
Northern and Southern hemisphere.
Task 3
Justify- Earth is a unique planet.
(can make speech, conversation or interview)

DAY 2
THE GLOBE LATITUDES AND LONGITUDES
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
•To list out features of latitude and longitude.
•To differentiate between latitude and
longitude
•To describe the different heat zones of the
Earth
PRE TEST
• MERIDIANS AND LONGITUDE ARE IMAGINARY LINES THAT RUNS FROM
_______________ TO ________________
• DIVIDES THE EARTH INTO WESTERN & EASTERN HEMISPHERE.
• The Globe has two types of circles.
• 1. Parallels – the lines that run from West to East. It is
parallel to Equator. Parallels or latitudes.
• 2. Meridians - the lines that run from North to South –
Meridians or longitudes.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIGH AND
LOW LATITUDES?
LET US OBSERVE A VIDEO
• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNZKdv-B6b4
180 MERIDIANS ON EAST AND 180 MERIDIANS ON WEST –
360 TOTAL. AT EQUATOR – THE DISTANCE BETWEEN 2
MERIDIANS IS GREATEST , AT POLES IT DECREASES.
PLACES NEAR THE EQUATOR HAS LOW LATITUDES.
PLACES NEAR THE POLES WILL HAVE HIGH
LATITUDES.
Places Latitude Climate
FEATURES OF PARALLELS:
1. EQUATOR IS THE LONGEST
PARALLEL.
2. THE LENGTH OF PARALLELS
START TO DECREASE AS WE
MOVE TOWARDS THE POLES.
3. DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO
PARALLELS ARE 111 KM.
4. THEY DO NOT MEET EACH
OTHER.
Important Parallels / Latitudes
N
s
s
Heat zones
These parallels are divided the
earth into three heat zones.
The cities that lie in different heat
zones have different types of
climates. It is because different
heat zones receive different
amounts of sunlight due to the
spherical shape of the earth.
Therefore those places that
receive the greatest amount of
sunlight are hotter than those
places that receive less amount of
sunlight.
Heat Zones of the Earth
Let’s watch a video

EXTENDED ACTIVITY.
• Draw the Images of Latitudes Longitudes, write their degrees and label them.
LETS HAVE QUIZZ
• https://quizizz.com/admin/quiz/57dac184febedb18e03259d4
DAY 3
THE GLOBE LATITUDES AND LONGITUDES
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
•To analyse the importance of International
time line.
•To locate coordinates of Latitudes and
longitudes on map.
LONGITUDE AND TIME
•The Earth rotates (spins) 360° in 24 hours.
360° / 24 hours = 15° per hour
•The world has 24 time zones, each l5° apart.
•
THERE IS A 1 HOUR TIME DIFFERENCE FOR
EVERY 15° OF LONGITUDE
ANOTHER CHEESY SAYING
•EAST INCREASE
Time is forward to all places to the east
•WEST LESS
•
Time is backward to all places to the west
LOCATING PLACES ON THE GLOBE
• LOCATING PLACES ON GLOBE – GRID IS NEEDED. GRID IS THE NETWORK OF LINES
ON GLOBE.
LOCATING PLACES ON THE GLOBE
NEW DELHI : Latitude 28.38 Degrees north
Longitude 77.12 Degrees east
Earth rotates west to east
Solar time is based on the position of the sun
NIGHT IS FALLING ON EARTH
Look at the East
Coast of the United
States. The lights
are already lit.
California the sun is
still visible.
IDL
The International
Date Line (IDL) is
an imaginary line
on Earth's surface
defining the
boundary between
one day and the
next. ... The
International Date
Line is located
halfway around the
world from the
prime meridian (0°
longitude)
•What happens when you cross the
international date line from west to east?
reason
The International Date
Line runs down the middle
of the Pacific Ocean. If you
cross the date line moving
east, you ADD a day,
whereas if you are moving
west you Subtract a day.
For example, if today is
Friday and we crossed the
International Date line
from west to east then it
would be Thursday.
