Editor's Notes

  1. Prior to starting training be sure to have the Willy the Whistle video playing in background as the group assembles.
  2. Introduction and Agenda
  3. These are the 3 goals of SRTS. NOTE: Most people present will have learned (or already know these.) You may say something like: As you know, SRTS has specific goals as outlined by SAFETEA-LU and the FHWA guidance for SRTS under the bill. And the South Carolina SRTS program works to meet these goals.”
  4. Again, most of you know the benefits of effective SRTS programs. You’ve heard these throughout the conference. These benefits (and many others) draw schools and communities to our program. Only if time permits when rehearsing presentation, describe the benefits: 1. Increasing physical activity can decrease the risk of obesity-related health problems for children. 2. By encouraging active transportation, we reduce the number of single family vehicles on the roadway. This, in turn reduces traffic congestion, which may lead to… 3. … safer roads for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers. Furthermore, when you have fewer one-family cars around schools, you… 4. May improve Air quality by reducing automobile traffic and idling 5. And when communities embrace more children walking and bicycling to school… in other words, when the community around the school supports Safe Routes… it can make for a better, more livable, more active community in general.
  5. Of course, the approach to reaching these goals and attaining the benefits is comprehensive. Strong local SRTS programs address the five E’s (program components) of Safe Routes to School. So, the statewide program must also address all five E’s.
  6. DESCRIBE: Partnership program Four levels Resource Center Friends Program Support Technical – travel plans, walk audits, webinars, “how to” information Friends Organizations include local governments, metropolitan planning organizations, local businesses and advocacy organizations. Over ### (? Number of) Friends. Friends support SRTS program at local (e.g., school or community level) or statewide. Shared goals include Increase physical activity of kids Encourage clean air, active communities Create sustainable programs Enhance Pedestrian and Bike Safety Shared resources Shared knowledge and skills Joint promotions Overall benefits from Friends: More seats at the table ( Every Friend can play a role in SRTS within a community or at the state level.) More eyes seeking opportunities ( Look to each of the Es to see where you can make a difference.) Greater reach. Stronger collaboration. Networks SC SRTS work within communities creates a network of people and organizations (see information about the Resource Center Friends) Website, hotline
  7. New Resource we’re offering
  8. “ So, to get everyone on the same page as to why the SC SRTS Resource Center is providing these trainings, let’s look at some statistics related to child pedestrian fatalities in SC and across the country.” Bullets: In looking at total pedestrian traffic fatalities (children and adults), SC has one of the highest pedestrian fatality rates in the nation. The most recent data shows SC ranked 14th highest, with 11% of all traffic fatalities being pedestrians. In looking at the risk for children specifically, we don’t have statistics just for SC, but nationally 1/5th of traffic fatalities for children age 14 or younger were pedestrians. That means that 20% of all traffic fatalities for children under age 14 are pedestrian fatalities. “ While SRTS programs work to improve the walking environment to make it safer for children to walk, we also want to make sure they have the skills to walk safely”
  9. This Curriculum is not the first attempt by NHTSA to educate children on pedestrian safety. How many of you have heard of the video Willie Whistle? That is the video that was playing as you came in this morning. Have any of you actually used the video? The Willie Whistle Video is hosted by a crossing guard that goes through some simple safe pedestrian crossing the street practices along with an animated figure named Willie Whistle. The Willie Whistle video was first released back in the 70’s. It has been redone and released so it is still available to you. You can download Willie Whistle from the NHTSA website for free. The problem with Willie Whistle is that there is no skill practice. Without Skill practice, retention will not occur to the level necessary to be a life-long safe pedestrian. Even though NHTSA provided the video Willie Whistle they knew that they needed to develop a more effective Child Pedestrian Safety Curriculum. It had been about 20 years since any changes had been made. So in 2007 they began the revision process. NHTSA did a great deal of work researching, developing and piloting before the new curriculum was released this year.
  10. Research in to child and safety education showed that knowledge is not enough. (Emphasis) Children must have skill practice. Research tells us that we need to INCORPORATE MORE OPTIONS FOR SKILLS TRAINING: Each school has different capabilities in terms of time, flexibility, resources and environment – so the new curriculum provides easier skill building options (in the gym) as well as the more effective skill building options like road side simulation . Remember the lack of skills practice was a huge weakness with the old Willie Whistle video! With this new curriculum that weakness has been eliminated. Research also tells us to INCORPORATE PARENT INVOLVEMENT: So the curriculum writing team Created a parent/caregiver tip sheet to go home with each lesson. This serves a Dual purpose: 1) educate parents, 2) give them “homework” or ways to reinforce child’s learning Another research driven addition to the curriculum is that OPPORTUNITIES are provided FOR SOCIAL INTERACTION: skills are reinforced through role playing, scenarios and decision making.
  11. As I have already noted Skill development is very important to assure that the students become safe pedestrians. Goal: The overall purpose of this program is to help children develop their knowledge of how to be a safe pedestrian into an automatic response behavior. In the cognitive stage we use teacher discussion and demonstration to provide the student knowledge. To move into the Associative stage students must PRACTICE what they have learned in order to ingrain the desired set of skills . Making the desired skill an automatic response (Autonomous Stage) will happen only through review and lesson extensions . Reaching the stage where the child uses these pedestrian safety skills automatically is critical to creating life-long safe pedestrian behavior.
  12. It was mentioned that All five lessons are taught in every grade. There are differences in the lessons taught and these will be pointed out in more detail. For now let’s point out just a few age group differences: Graphics and concepts are tailored to the way children learn at each developmental age. These are examples from left to right of illustrations used in K-1, 2-3, and 4-5. The curriculum does the same thing with concepts being sure to keep them developmentally appropriate. Simple illustrations like these convey basic information to younger students while Photos of real life situations are used for older grades. Other differences in age group lessons: It was decided to delay introducing the term “Pedestrian” until the 2 nd -3 rd grade curriculum. Mid Block is a term not used until grades 4-5. We leave the crossing the street song out of grades 4-5. In grades 4-5 we start to talk about being a role model for younger children. Because we know that every class has a variety of learning styles and abilities, Curriculum instructions inform teachers to use their own judgment in determining the abilities and attention spans of individual classes.
  13. CREATED A SEPARATE RESOURCE WHICH LISTS the applicable SC Performance Standards for PE and Health. THIS LIST IS INCLUDED IN THE INSIDE FRONT POCKET OF YOUR BINDER.
  14. Open your curriculum notebooks and you can explore the layout of the curriculum as I go through it now. (If guides are not available you can use the slides.) Here you see the basics of the curriculum structure. We have a Parallel curriculum structure for each grade grouping. There are 5 Lessons. Lessons start with the basics- walking along the street safely and build progressively right up to being a pedestrian in parking lots and around a bus. Every lesson can be adapted to your own school’s needs and time restraints. Following these lessons from one to five, teaches kids how to handle typical situations in urban and rural settings (e.g. with and without sidewalks) There is a teacher’s guide also along with pre and post tests. If using hard copy of curriculum leave this slide up until you get through the resources section where you mention the books that might be used.
  15. At first glance of this slide, what is your first reaction to what you see here? Does it seem to cover everything you would have in your own lessons? This simple lesson structure makes it very easy to use. You can see here all of the parts of the lesson. I will go over each of these in detail in the following slides. Go to Notebook or if unavailable use the slides. O pen your notebook to the large K-1 tab section and go to lesson 1. Leave Lesson Structure slide up until you get throught the parent/caregiver tip sheet in the notebook if you are using the notebook instead of the slides. I am sure that many of the curriculums you have experience with are set up in a similar fashion. The structure of this pedestrian safety curriculum is one of the easiest that I have found to use. With every lesson set up in the same way, once you are familiar with this structure you can find exactly what you want in any lesson.
  16. Let’s spend a few minutes on the key messages of each of these lessons and point out to you some key differences between the grade level lessons as they are divided k-1, 2-3, and 4-5.
  17. We will now walk through the Walking Safely Near Traffic lesson. The first thing I would do to prepare for this lesson is to reference the teacher’s guide with the overview chart that includes all grades. From there I would check the materials list for each lesson which can also be found in chart form in the teacher’s guide. I also would take a look at the cross-curricular suggestions to see if there is anything I want to add to my own lesson or if there is something the classroom teacher or one of the related arts teachers might want to use in a lesson extension. What I would like to do right now is to go through the discussion and modeling parts of lesson 2 in the 2 nd -3 rd grade lesson. Once that is complete we will begin skill practice for the same lesson.
  18. If you could turn to your second tab in your curriculum notebook that will take you to the first lesson in the 2-3 grade section. Find the first page of lesson 2 in this section. The full lesson is listed at approximately 40 minutes. However that would include following the script exactly and singing the included song and watching the Willie Whistle video and so on. Based on our pilot teachers’ experience, you can get to the most important concepts in this lesson in 20 minutes and that would include the skill practice. The great detail given in all of these lessons is intended for someone that might not be comfortable with their own knowledge of the material. Experienced teachers will be able to read through the entirety of the lesson and put your own spin on it using your own teaching style. You can see on the first page you have the lesson objectives, the National Standards for Health and PE, Materials needed, and the preparation that would be needed prior to the start of class. Now…as I go through this sample lesson with you I NEED YOU TO PARTICIPATE. At this point the group would move to the set up area inside. (To teach this lesson you may use the sample script found in your curriculum guide, for Lesson 2 or make up your own)
  19. Use this slide to review after your model lesson. Now class I have just crossed a street safely. Let’s review the 5 steps to crossing a street safely. Only cross with an adult or responsible person. Find a safe place without visual barriers if possible. Stop at the edge or second edge if there were barriers. Look, listen. Cross in a straight line without running or playing.
  20. SOC to encourage participants to view additional resources on the website, explaining that they will be in touch and that they (the SOC’s) are also available as a resource. (Next slide lists all SOC’s) Note that the NHTSA Child Pedestrian Safety Curriculum is available through a link on the SCSafeRoutes.org website in the resources section.
