The cultural and visitor landscape
Digital or tech-free?
Facts or stories?
Experience or enlightenment?
How to meet today’s visitor
interests?
Endless
digital
options …
Cultural sites are teased by
all things “smart” and shiny.
Which ones add relevant value to
your objectives?
All agree on the importance of engagement and
on inclusion of new voices and perspectives.
But how?
Have we made it to the BYOD world?
Not yet, and it’s happening more slowly than expected.
◎ Visitor issues of power, data, and headphones
◎ Not all demographics comfortable with the tech
◎ Even tech-savvy reticent to download one-time apps
So now what?
The BYOD elephant in the room
Some people are there. They have free data everywhere. Their
phone is part of their identity. But . . . they still need headphones.
Many aren’t there. They want a device like they’ve used before. The
tech-averse aren’t comfortable, and the tech-savvy definitely don’t
Even when free, apps are still not meeting needs. Less than 1% of
and major museums are pulling or retreating on investments
One day everyone will use their phones for tours. But until then it’s
It’s about CYOD. It’s about considering the right mix to meet your
Cultural Trend:
The Social Visit
BYOD? Or CYOD?
They asked for “interactive.”
They meant “multisensory.”
In a single word:
ENGAGEMENT.
What visitors mean over
what they say.
Everyone is under pressure to be more
sustainable; not everyone knows how
to hunt.
What do
millennials want?
You can’t behave like the category if
you want to outperform it.
People are

How
people
engage
with
cultural
spaces is
changing—
fast.
Busy and highly
demanding
 Your audiences expect instant gratification. They can get a taxi in
seconds, food in minutes, clothes in a day.
 Lack of time is the most commonly reported barrier to attending the arts.
(NEA)
What this means for you:
 Your visitors have higher expectations than ever before, AND they’re
becoming more difficult to engage.
 >10% of all global travel spend is influenced by TripAdvisor.
 85% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations.
(NEA)
What this means for you:
 Get something wrong, and there’s no hiding from unhappy visitors.
 The power is—quite literally—in their hands.
Empowered
and visible
Experience-driven
 When people can find facts in seconds on their phone, experiences
need to be well beyond Wikipedia.
 They crave moments to share—every day 95 million photos and
videos are posted on Instagram alone. (Reuters)
What this means for you:
 You need to offer moments people want to shout about, that surprise
and ignite their imagination.
 Unique multisensory experiences are what excites audiences today.
 Mobile, IR, AR, VR, and 3D audio are all evolving rapidly into the consumer market—
and ours.
 BYOD hasn’t taken off yet, so what to do in the interim?
What this means for you:
 There are interesting opportunities to adopt new technologies, but choices vary as much
as your objectives.
Tech-savvy
Demographically
diverse
 Gen X, Gen Y, Gen Z—everyone wants something different.
 Chinese visitors are a growing proportion of overall visitors. (Skift) And locally
diverse visitors present still new language challenges.
What this means for you:
 Your audiences are diverse, ever-changing, and less easy to categorize and track.

We know how
to create the
unmissable
moments people
crave because
we do it for:
Attractions
We work with many of the world’s
most forward-thinking cultural sites.
So we have broad and active insights
on leading innovations.
We know what’s working, what needs
optimization, and what should be tried
next.
Revolutionary image
recognition app at
the Hirshhorn
"A museum smartphone guide that's actually cool" —Mashable
Multimedia content is unlocked by scanning art with
image recognition technology. Visitors don’t need to
download the app, just visit https://hi.si.edu/ on their
smartphone for a frictionless experience.
Fall in love on
the Nelson Atkins
audiowalk
Fueled by emotive stories, this is a completely immersive tour. Once a
visitor presses “start,” they no longer have to interact with their device
thanks to location-awareness technology and Wi-Fi triangulation.
"What we have created together with Antenna is even beyond what we’d
hoped. We are seeing visitors have strong emotional responses—from
laughter to tears.”
—Anne Manning, Director of Education at Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
Pure drama
with 3D Audio
at Alte Pinakothek
"I wasn’t expecting an experience that is so dramatic; this new
format really drew me into the paintings and the life of Fuseli,
helping me understand it in an emotional way.”
—Alte Pinakothek visitor
In this 3D-audio tour experience, there are no directions, no
explanations, no facts. It is pure drama. Eighteen short audio
plays feature actors as the Swiss artist and his biographer—
talking, thinking, even arguing.
Immersive
Storytelling at
Museo Frida Kahlo
“Definitely get the audio tour. Without it, just wouldn't
be as informative or special. Had me in tears."
– Museo Frida Kahlo visitor
Hear the sounds Frida would have heard when she was bedbound or a mambo
playing in Diego’s room evoking his fun attitude to life. The tour uses sound in
an experiential way to evoke the ambience of the house and connect visitors to
Frida and Diego.
Social connections at
Kunsthalle Munich
Giving visitors a voice – and getting in on the conversation
Like, share, comment, chat…Antenna’s new social tour app is creating a
genuine cultural connection.
Visitors interact with other visitors or museum staff through chat groups,
commenting on artworks, the museum, and various other topics. The app
includes IR-activated tour content and is also used to fuel the Kunsthalle’s
monthly Afterwork social events.
A 50-year legacy
re-vitalized at
Woodstock
Augmented Reality and 3D Sound recreate the iconic festival
Witness empty farm-fields come alive with the sounds of half a
million people. AR, 3D Sound, and real-time geolocation bring to
life the story of how this iconic site would come to form a
cultural keystone of the 60s and the hippie movement itself.

Our strategic approach
Chart your course
What do you visitors want? How have they changed? What does the future
look like? How can we help you rise to your greatest challenges?
We really get to know you, focusing on your people,
your culture, your audience, your space, and your
story so we can set the right strategy.
Plan the journey
What stories do you need to tell and what tech will
bring them to life? We undertake a kick-off meeting, a.k.a.
a Discovery Workshop, where we explore the fundamental
creative goals of your project.
The outcome? A brief that sets the overall
direction for the project and builds the
foundations that will help us develop the right
ideas and choose the tech to meet your
challenges.
Creative spark
Hooks, turns, beats, reveals. We brainstorm, role-play, gossip, laugh, imagine,
dive deep—anything it takes to surface the “wow.”
Our team of writers and sound artists work with you to
build captivating narrative journeys in whatever tech format
makes sense for you and your audiences.

The Antenna Social Tour App
Visitors want
a living, breathing, cultural connection
with you and with each other.
In the age of social…
Imagine...
The Antenna Social Tour App
Introducing
The Antenna Social App takes the concept of an audio or multimedia
tour and evolves it into something much more interactive and
personal: through user generated content and features from social
media platforms it creates a living, breathing cultural connection for
visitors and institutions alike.
The Antenna Social app
Like, share, follow, message, chat, watch,
listen, record…ENGAGE
The visitor experience for the social generation
Welcome James Johnson!
We are delighted to have you the Egypt Exhibition
tonight.
Make your visitors‘
experience personal
 Send them messages about upcoming video screenings, guided tours or anything
else that matches their interests
 Give them the opportunity to join other (live) tour groups based on topics they
selected when they logged in
 Welcome VIPs, patrons and special members as they arrive
…with tailored messages and notifications
Keep your visitors
connected
The Social Tour App enables your visitors to:
 Chat with other visitors in groups based on interests, topic or tour
stop
 Share comments with everyone else on the app
 Ask the site (your staff) any questions that are on their mind,
enabling real-time dialogue
…with real-time instant
messaging
Get your visitors
involved
Empower your visitors to become active participants,
communicating, sharing, and creating their own content:
 In chat groups: visitors can upload their own photos and videos
photos and videos to interest-based chat groups.
 On the big screen: user generated content can be shared to
be shared to live feeds on big screens across the site.
…through sharing their own content
Data-driven visitor
insights
The Social Tour App not only allows you to collect that data, it also
enables you to show or send tailored content to your visitors based on
that data.
Discover what each visitor is interested in
The Social Tour App utilises Image Recognition to create a seamless intuitive
experience for your visitors. All they have to do is frame the object with their
phone camera and an option will pop-up to read, watch or listen to content, or join
a chat group about it.
Image recognition
Your visitors can point their phone cameras at an
object to access content or join discussions on it
At the click of a button, visitors are allocated a position in the
queue, digitally. Later, when it‘s their turn to enter, the app alerts
them. So instead of wasting time queuing, they can go
shopping, have a coffee, or just stroll around the immediate
locality. Which means less stressed, more engaged visitors
when they gain entrance.
Digital queue management
Your visitors can queue without
physically being in a line
Offline functionality
With the Antenna Social Tour App, LTE Bluetooth & peer-to-peer mesh network
technology provides a back up network which allows the app to function, and
users to communicate and share content with each other, when in out of signal
areas.
Removesthe dependenceoncellularorWiFi connection
Group tours
Your visitors’ phones become group tour devices
that get everyone talking, sharing and engaging.
 Multi-lingual group tours are now a reality
 Groups can roam at will and interact whenever they want
 Teachers can let school groups split up and still keep track of them from
anywhere on the site
 No need for a secondary Group Tour system
Through the Antenna Social Tour App, guides can talk with the group
(individuals or the whole), and the group can talk with each other. These
conversations are two-way, and they don’t even have to be in the same room.
This means that:
Visitor: “Can I learn more about this
sculpture?”
Guide: “I’m sending you a video now—click
play.”
Student:
“Miss, we’re stuck on question 5.”
Teacher:
“Come and find me. I’m in the café.”
New message from your tour guide:
“If anyone wants to grab lunch, you will have a chance
at Altare della Patria. I’ll message you when you need
to start heading back…”
City tours with
triggering
The Social Tour App’s ability to use to GPS to define
specific areas (‘geo-fences’) outdoors is perfect for city
tours - it means you can track where users are and where
they are moving to/from, and automatically trigger content
or send tailored messages based on their specific
surroundings.
Utilise GPS-based Geofencing to enable location-
based content triggering
Il Tulpino Nero is famous for serving the best Carbonara
in Rome. Listen to what makes their recipe so delicious.

it look and feel like your own.

Definitely get an Audio Guide
I would recommend getting the audio guide as
it's very informative and interesting even for
die-hard fans and easy to use, but probably
adds an extra hour onto your trip so just be
aware if you are with really young kids or with
someone who might not be that much into HP.
Saying that, although there is an appreciation
of the stories, it is a studio after all, so there is
a lot of focus on the craft of making the films,
making it interesting for those who aren't big
HP fans.

they added an audio guide & this is a huge
improvement, each item you view has a number & it
corresponds to the digital guide, instead of getting a
paper guide, you listen to this and it improves the
experience a 1000 times over, we thoroughly enjoyed

  • 7. All agree on the importance of engagement and on inclusion of new voices and perspectives. But how?
  • 8. Have we made it to the BYOD world? Not yet, and it’s happening more slowly than expected. ◎ Visitor issues of power, data, and headphones ◎ Not all demographics comfortable with the tech ◎ Even tech-savvy reticent to download one-time apps So now what?
  • 9. The BYOD elephant in the room Some people are there. They have free data everywhere. Their phone is part of their identity. But . . . they still need headphones. Many aren’t there. They want a device like they’ve used before. The tech-averse aren’t comfortable, and the tech-savvy definitely don’t Even when free, apps are still not meeting needs. Less than 1% of and major museums are pulling or retreating on investments One day everyone will use their phones for tours. But until then it’s It’s about CYOD. • 10. Cultural Trend: The Social Visit BYOD? Or CYOD? They asked for “interactive.” They meant “multisensory.” In a single word: ENGAGEMENT. What visitors mean over what they say. • 15.  Unique multisensory experiences are what excites audiences today.  Mobile, IR, AR, VR, and 3D audio are all evolving rapidly into the consumer market— and ours.  BYOD hasn’t taken off yet, so what to do in the interim? What this means for you:  There are interesting opportunities to adopt new technologies, but choices vary as much as your objectives. Tech-savvy
  • 16. Demographically diverse  Gen X, Gen Y, Gen Z—everyone wants something different.  Chinese visitors are a growing proportion of overall visitors.
