And why… <ul><li>Emphasis is a useful tool that cues the reader to an important word, phrase or idea in a piece of text. </li></ul><ul><li>Using emphasis will keep an essay focused and explicit. </li></ul><ul><li>Creating emphasis can also help a text with its pacing and voice! </li></ul>
  3. 3. How Does one use emphasis in an academic essay? Christopher J. Kerstetter <ul><li>The most common form of emphasis in an academic essay is the underline. Underlining a word, phrase or an idea will draw a readers attention to the authors intent. </li></ul><ul><li>One can create emphasis through the use of signal phrases and words such as: Above all , Most importantly!, and crucially--etc.. . . </li></ul><ul><li>Lets not forget to punctuate! Colons, dashes, and punctuation marks will illicit more emphasis in a text than commas and periods. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Emphasis in academic continued <ul><li>Rearrange wording to create emphasis. For example: </li></ul><ul><li>He fell down four flights of stairs and survived. </li></ul><ul><li>Four flights of stairs he fell and still survived. </li></ul><ul><li>Using a combination of sentence rearrangement and signal phrases also create emphasis. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Most importantly Remember! <ul><li>That using emphasis can only strengthen an essay if the text itself is organized and that the ideas presented are concise! </li></ul><ul><li>A concise/organized essay will benefit from the use of emphasis!—see what I did there? </li></ul>
