Task 3 Understand the regulation of the media sector
 The British Board of film classification is a non-profit independent company,
that self regulate classifications and labeling systems in the uk e.g. films.

 As a highly expert regulators, The BBFC aims are to:
 Protect the public, which might raise harm risks.

 Empower the public, especially parents to make inform choices

 Respond to and reflect changing social attitude towards media content

 Examples of this is the movie Human Centipede was band for breaking
most of the BBFC regulations so it was banned and then later, 2 minutes of
the film had to be cut out for the film to be certified for viewing to the public.
 The BVA was established 30 years ago to represent the interests of
publishers and rights owners of pre-recorded video entertainment.  Today,
around 8,000 titles are released every year in the UK.
 The BVA represent the industries:

 The Media

 The Government

 The Public

 Other Industry Organisations
 Film Distributors' Association Ltd. (FDA) is the trade body for theatrical film
distributors in the UK - the companies that release films for UK  cinema audiences.

 They are a founder member of All Industry Marketing for Cinema

 They are also represented on the British Screen Advisory Council.

 UK film distributors invested £147.8 million in advertising their new releases This stirred up
enormous demand - 167.3 million cinema tickets were bought UK-wide in 2003, an average of
14 million every month. But, alongside the legitimate cinema market, the publicity also helped
to create a market for pirates - film traffickers who distribute rip-off copies of brand new films, in
the hope of exploiting the built-up consumer excitement and demand.

 The Video Standards council were developed to oversee a Code of Practice
designed to promote high standards within the video Industry.

 The VSC was mainly created to promote the high standards in the video
    gaming industry,

 Pre-recorded videos, DVDs and computer games bring entertainment to
millions of people. Meaning that there is a very powerful means of
communication that must come across right.
 Ofcom is the communications regulator. We regulate the TV and radio sectors,
fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services, plus the airwaves over which
    wireless devices operate.

 Our main legal duties are to ensure:
 the UK has a wide range of electronic communications services,
    including high-speed services such as broadband;
 a wide range of high-quality television and radio programmes are
    provided, appealing to a range of tastes and interests;
 television and radio services are provided by a range of different
    organisations;
 people who watch television and listen to the radio are protected from
    harmful or offensive material.
 The Trading Standards Institute is a professional membership
association formed in 1881. It represents trading standards
professionals in the UK and overseas - in local authorities, the business
and consumer sectors and in central government.
 It exists to promote and protect the success of a modern vibrant
economy, and to safeguard the health, safety and wellbeing of citizens
by enhancing the professionalism of members in support of
empowering consumers, encouraging honest business and targeting
    rogue traders.
 The PCC is an independent body which administers the system of self-
regulation for the press. It does so primarily by dealing with complaints,
framed within the terms of the Editors' Code of Practice, about the editorial
    content of newspapers and magazines.

 The PCC Acts by:

 Issuing ruling on complaint.

 conducting training seminars for working journalists and editors
 ASA is a regulator for all types of media and deal with potential breaches of
    the advertising code.

 They aim to achieve our mission by getting better at regulating ads in all
    media, and in particular by:

 Making a success of regulating online ads

 Being an effective part of the response to societal issues shown to be
    affected by advertising

 Placing more emphasis on prevention rather than cure

 Being more efficient and in tune with consumers, business and society
