3. Continued
• Group in periodic table: 1
• Group name: Alkali metal
• Period in periodic table: 7
• Melting point: 27.2ºC (80.96ºF)
• Boiling point: 677ºC (1,250.6ºF)
• It is so radioactive and hard to work with, there is not
much known about Francium.
• It also has no uses because it is so radioactive.
4. Interesting Information
• The second rarest naturally occurring
element.
• It was the last element discovered in nature,
that isn’t synthesis.
• The most unstable of the naturally occurring
elements
• As little as 20–30 g (one ounce) exists at any
given time throughout the Earth’s crust.
5. Discovery
• Francium (Eka-caesium)
was discovered in 1939 by
Marguerite Perey of the
Curie Institute in Paris,
France
• This element existence was
predicted by Mendeleev
during the 1870's, he called
it eka-caesium.
6. Isotopes
• There are 34 identified Francium isotopes.
• There are no stable isotopes of Francium.
• Francium-223 is the most stable isotope with a
half-life of 21.8 minutes
• The least stable ground state isotope is
francium-215, with a half-life of 0.12 "s.
• All isotopes of Francium decay into either
astatine, radium, or radon.
