The City of Owen Sound is governed by a municipal council

Civil Marriage Ceremony is $350, plus applicable taxes.

Commissioning Services are offered by the Clerk and staff
delegated by the Clerk. The Commissioning fee is $45.20

The Community Services Dept places a high priority on creat-
ing a community where development enhances the City and
creates a safe urban environment where our residents and visi-
tors can be active and healthy.
Need a building permit? Want to register your children for
swimming lessons or a summer camp? Community Services
offers recreation programs, accessible playgrounds, cemetery,
parks, open spaces, and playing fields and many exciting
events and cultural experiences, land use planning, building,
all within an attractive and safe community.
BUILDING DIVISION

The Building Division is responsible for ensuring that
all construction within the City conforms to the Ontario
Building Code, City Bylaws and other applicable laws.
The Division coordinates new building projects in the
City working closely with the Operations Department and
Planning Division, to encourage development.
Services:
• Building Permits (building, plumbing, conditional,
demolition, change of use) required to construct, renovate
and/or alter existing or new buildings or structures
• Inspections of projects under permit to ensure that the
Ontario Building Code, Zoning By-laws and all other
applicable laws are upheld for the duration of the project
• Preparation of Statistics for use by federal, provin-
cial & municipal agencies, the Building and Development
Industry, as well as the media
If you’re thinking of renovating, installing a swimming
pool, building a deck or other construction, you may
need a Building Permit. Even small additions,
decks, garden sheds are required to meet
Zoning By-law standards.

PLANNING DIVISION

The City of Owen Sound Planning Division is a small group
of professionals who provide customer service to residents,
developers, builders and other regarding the ongoing
development of our City. We work closely with other City
Departments to ensure that the land use goals and vision of
Council and the community are attained.
The Planning Division has two primary functions - to formulate
policy that guides the development of our City as well as to
process applications for new development.
Policy direction to stakeholders is provided through the City’s
Official Plan, which is a general outline of what type of land
use should take place and where that development should
occur.
The main implementation tool used by the Planning Division
is the Comprehensive Zoning By-law, which was updated
and approved in 2010. The Zoning B-law implements the
Official Plan by establishing specific land uses and regula-
tions pertaining to those land uses.
In terms of application review, we evaluate each new devel-
opment application on its merits and compliance with appli-
cable laws.
Our team is here to serve you with any land use questions

site and building regulations (ie. setbacks and parking)

Heritage Programs

The Planning Division is also responsible for Heritage
Programs within the City. The Heritage Coordinator can
provide you with information regarding the properties that
are listed on the Heritage Register and Designated under the
Ontario Heritage Act.
The City’s Strategic Plan suggests the City should advocate
preservation of significant buildings, structures and
natural heritage, preserving and celebrating its unique
history through architectural preservation and historical
interpretation.
Programs:
• Heritage Register: An inventory of properties of cultural
heritage value or interest. Currently contains 150 listings.

• Designated Properties: To date 30 properties have
been designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.
• Heritage Permits: For alterations to designated proper-
ties.
• Façade & Structural Improvement Program: A
grant program that encourages restoration and rehabilita-
tion of downtown store fronts and designated buildings.
• Heritage Property Tax Relief Program: Provides
Tax Refunds to eligible designated property owners who
wish to opt into the program.
• Interpretive Plaque Program: The Interpretive Plaque
program began in 1998; to date 46 plaques have been
placed around the City. Take a virtual tour online.
• Interpretive Walking Tours: Historic Walking/Biking
Tour brochures available at the Visitor Centre or City Hall
• Doors Open: Since 2003, the City has participated in
this province wide celebration of Community Heritage. The
date of the 2013 Owen Sound event is June 1 and 2. To

The Recreation Division is responsible for the booking of all
City Facilities and Parks. The Division is also committed to
providing recreation programs that reflect the needs of the
community and offer opportunities for an active healthy life-
style. Recreation also offers summer programming for youth
including day camp and specialty camps, swimming pro-
grams as well as the Skateboard and Bike Parks in partner-
ship with the Owen Sound Family Y.
The Culture & Events Division is responsible for Events in
the City, including Celebrate Summer Owen Sound, New
Year’s Eve, etc. as well as the implementation of the Cultural
Awards program and other cultural initiatives.
Culture & Events Division is committed to ensuring residents

Greenwood Cemetery

Greenwood Cemetery is located on 40 acres of land in the
southwesterly corner of the City. Surrounded by tall, stately
maples and cedar hedges, a wooded ravine with a trail runs
diagonally through the centre of the cemetery. It is a traditional
cemetery with areas for both upright monuments and flat mark-
ers. The original house is now used as a cemetery office; a
maintenance complex for storing grounds equipment is located
behind the house. The cemetery has three Columbaria as
well as a scattering garden.
Greenwood Cemetery is a place for the living—please
come and visit. Visitation is daily from sunrise to sundown.
Greenwood Cemetery Walking Tour available at Cemetery,
City Hall, Tourism or on-line.
The cemetery office is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to
4:00 p.m. and other times by appointment.

• Proof of $2 million third party liability insurance naming
the City of Owen Sound as an additional insured
• Appropriate number of certified SmartServe bartenders

Bishop Regional Airport is
a Transport Canada reg-
istered airfield located 4
km east of Owen Sound
on Highway 26. The 6000 square foot Terminal Building is
open for business 7 days a week year round. The airside
facilities include a 3932 foot (1198 m) runway, an apron for
aircraft parking, fuel for piston and jet aircraft, and hangars
for aircraft storage. The runway and taxiways are lighted for
night operations. The general public is welcome to visit and
take advantage of the services available including aircraft
charter, flight training and sightseeing tours. Aircraft owners
can also utilize the aircraft maintenance facility based at the
airport.

Conventional Transit

The Conventional Transit service is a four (4) route system oper-
ating during the day Monday through Saturday. All four routes
provide 1/2 hour service from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm Monday
through Friday. On Saturdays, bus services operate between
9:00 am and 5:30 pm with 1/2 hour service on all routes.

Specialized Transit
The Specialized Transit service is a door-to- door transporta-
tion service for residents of the City with mobility limitations
that restrict their ability to use the City’s conventional transit

The Miller Waste Transfer Station/City of Owen Sound
Recycling Depot is located on 20th Avenue East North of
20th Street East. The hours of operation are:

RECYCLING
The City provides many recycling opportunities. The
programs include both curbside pickup and depot based
programs.
Residential
The City provides bi-weekly residential curbside recycling
pickup. Residential Blue Boxes are for sale at either City
Hall or the Public Works Office.
Industrial, Commercial, Institutional (ICI)
In 2006 the City passed a By-Law requiring all ICI facilities
within the City to recycle. Recycling carts are available for
weekly curbside collection for most commercial and institu-
tional facilities. Please contact Public Works if your ICI facil-
ity requires assistance in setting up a recycling program.
Corrugated Cardboard
Cardboard from the downtown core is picked up every
week. All other areas are collected on a monthly basis.
All cardboard should be flattened and bundled and
not exceed 1 metre (3’) in any dimension or exceed 18
kilograms (40 pounds) in weight.
Boxboard
Plastic and wax-coated boxboard (such as cereal boxes)
and tetra-paks (juice boxes) are included in the regular
bi-weekly blue box collection.
StyrofoamPolystyrene and Electronics
These materials must be delivered to the Recycling Centre.

WASTE & WASTEWATER

WASTE COLLECTION
The City provides bi-weekly curbside waste collection.
All domestic and commercial premises are allowed a
maximum of three containers/bags per week for
the downtown core. Outside the downtown core, a
maximum of four containers/bags bi-weekly. Every
container/bag must have a bag tag. For garbage in a
container the top bag or item inside the container must
have a bag tag attached to it.
Garbage Bags or Containers must not weigh more than
18 kilograms (40 pounds).
Purchasing Bag Tags
Bag tags may be purchased individually at City Hall or
the Public Works Office, and in multiples of 5 at several
independent businesses throughout the City.

While we at the Owen Sound Police Service continue to
ensure the safety of our 22,000 residents, thousands of
yearly visitors, 8,900 households and 133 kilometers of
roadways, we also enjoy working closely with and being a
proud part of our community.
The 97 employees of the Owen Sound Police Service many
of whom live and raise our families in Owen Sound enjoy
giving back and going above our “job descriptions”. Our
members are not only active in various community groups
and coaching local sports teams they also give back to
numerous Charitable Organizations through the Canadian
Cancer Society, Special Olympics, Law Enforcement Torch
Run, Alzheimer’s Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the
Heart and Stroke Society to name a few.
The Owen Sound Police Service, while being one of
the most proactive police services in the province for its
size, continues to expand not only the enforcement and
investigative side of policing but also just as importantly
focuses on education and crime prevention. With the
assistance of provincial grants and the dedication of
personnel, the Owen Sound Police Service ensures that
every student in Owen Sound is offered structured and
interactive safety lessons. With the addition of the Positive
Choices Community Safety Village visiting every elementary
school not only have we had personal and positive contact
with each student but we are providing them with the
tools to make good and healthy decisions on their own.
A new initiative “Safe Driving Education” will see officers
and our community partners visiting our High Schools and
adult groups to provide Distracted and Impaired Driving
messaging. The students will have the opportunity to try our
many interactive displays designed to demonstrate how
much the use of cell phones, iPods, drugs and alcohol will
have on their abilities to safely operate a motor vehicle.

presentations to adults, community groups and organizations

fundraisers, or as a member of our Auxiliary Police Unit we
are completely indebted to all of these wonderful volunteers
that give so freely of their time.

Visit the boyhood home of Canada’s
famous flying ace and wartime hero,
William Avery “Billy” Bishop, located in
downtown Owen Sound. Find out about
his amazing life and legacy as well as
Canada’s military and aviation history.
Experience a slice of Victorian lifestyle in
this national historic site featuring many
furnishings and possessions of the Bishop
family, who first lived in this grand home
over a century ago. Outside enjoy the

place on the grounds.
This summer see To Learn, To Serve, To
Advance about the history of the air cadet
movement as well as Local Heroes, an
exhibit focusing on Owen Sound’s three
Victoria Cross winners.
Travel back in time to Owen Sound’s
industrial past when the city was a thriving
port. Housed in a former Canadian National
Railway station on the city’s waterfront, the
Museum features artefacts, scale models,
archival photos, and interactive stations.
Outside the made in Owen Sound tug the
Ancaster is on display. Visitors can also go on
board a restored caboose sitting on the area’s
only remaining rail lines.
On exhibit this summer Scottish Spirit,
Canadian Dreams: The Kennedy Story, an
exhibit looking at the rich industrial legacy of
William Kennedy and Sons Ltd. The Last Stop
provides an historic overview about the end of
rail in the Owen Sound area. This summer the
Marine & Rail Museum will be a perfect venue
view the tall ships when they arrive in the
harbour this August.

art, along with hands-on opportunities to engage with the
world of art-making. Whether it’s peaceful contemplation or
a challenge to the way you see the world, the Tom Thomson
Art Gallery has something to excite the maverick in you.
The Tom Thomson Art Gallery is a regional public gallery
and national cultural attraction with a top-notch, revolving
program of contemporary and historical exhibitions, lectures,
forums, films, concerts and workshops. A dynamic place
where artists and audiences meet and flourish, the Gallery
provides visitors with enriching experiences through art.
An ambitious program of exhibitions by local, Canadian
and international artists makes the Tom Thomson Art Gallery
a destination point to experience the ever-changing world of
contemporary art. Enjoy new artistic media like video, sound,
performance and installation works, alongside traditional fine
arts such as painting, sculpture and craft, in exhibitions that
showcase current trends in visual art. Exhibitions are accom-
panied by informative materials and tours are conducted by
trained guides —all designed to bring a new dimension to
visitors’ enjoyment and appreciation of art and its creation.
Established in 1967, the Gallery is named for the iconic
Canadian landscape artist Tom Thomson (1877-1917) and
houses one of Canada’s largest collections of his work.
Thomson, who grew up in the Owen Sound area, was a
maverick, a break-away artist who fused a passion for the
wilderness with a new style of skillful and experimental paint-
ing; he inspired the formation of the Group of Seven through
his transformative portrayal of the natural world.
Canadian Spirit 2013
One With the North
From May through October organizations, individuals and
businesses will create opportunities to celebrate this event.
The Canadian Spirit project will consist of exhibitions, perfor-
mances, readings, film series, hands on activities and other
events bringing together people to explore, celebrate and
connect with Thomson and his legacy. Check the website for

Canadian Spirit goes beyond mere homage, providing
opportunities for critical engagement and discourse, includ-
ing contemporary responses to the work, investigations of the
“environmental” tourist market both past and present, and
representation from First Nations communities discussing the
mythologizing of an “undiscovered” country which had been
their home for millennia prior to Thomson’s and the Group of
Seven’s depictions of the majestic, unpeopled northlands. As
such Canadian Spirit presents a multi-layered, many-faceted
opportunity to explore and discover Thomson, and his
beloved Algonquin Park, in a way never before presented.
Canadian Spirit continues through Canadian Spirit 2017:
Someday they will know what I mean... marking the 100th
anniversary of Thomson’s death and the 150th anniversary
of Canada and which will focus on ideas and issues around
Canadian identity, its past and its evolution. The Canadian
Spirit series will balance the honour owed to the past with
the needs of the present, while always looking forward to the
future.
Works by Tom Thomson and his contemporaries will be on
view during our CANADIAN SPIRIT: The Tom Thomson
Experience exhibition. Paintings, memorabilia and archi-
val images offer an insightful look at Thomson, ranging from
his early life in Owen Sound to his untimely death at Canoe
Lake in 1917. Thomson is truly one of Canada’s most influ-
ential artists of the 20th century and a true Canadian hero!
The Wave Passes is one of the many projects we are
undertaking as part of our Canadian Spirit 2013: One
With the North project. Canadian Spirit is an ongoing
annual series developed by the Tom Thomson Art Gallery
that will culminate in Canadian Spirit 2017: Someday
they will know what I mean...marking the 100th
anniversary of Thomson’s death and 150th anniversary of
Canada and which will focus on ideas and issues around
Canadian identity, its past and itsevolution. The Canadian
Spirit series will balance the honour owed to the past with
the needs of the present, while always looking forward to the
future.
Owen Sound is a unique environment. It is known for
the notable Canadians who resided here including Tom
Thomson, Agnes McPhail, Nellie McClung, Norman Bethune
and Billy Bishop. Owen Sound was the most northern stop
for the Underground Railway and plays an important part in
the settlement of Canada’s black community. The Women’s
Temperance League and the Canadian Suffragette movement
all have roots in Owen sound and we are he home of the
active Beth Ezekiel Synagogue -- Canada’s last small town
synagogue. The history and legacy of Owen Sound is rich,
varied, activist and multi-cultural - and not as well known
as it should be. A walking-tour of Greenwood Cemetery
provides an overview with designations of graves inluding
Remarkable Woman, African American, Medical Leader,
Political Leader, Victoria Cross, Athletic Leader and Early
Pioneer. These people, the well-known and the not-so-well-
known, their stories and their legacies will be the inspiration
for the projects that will be produced as part of The Wave
Passes.
Lively and stimulating programs for all ages foster an appre-
ciation of contemporary art and culture. Adults, teens and
children can participate in an array of learning opportunities
including art classes, school programs, workshops, and other
art activities.
The Gallery also offers lectures by artists and critics, film
screenings, readings by writers and poets, concerts, our Art
& Architecture tour and TTAG - You’re It! Offsite projects..

The Tall Ships are Coming! We are very excited to be one of the 16 communities in Ontario to be hosting the Tall
Ships 1812 Tour on August 16-18th. This will be a fabulous, affordable event for the whole family. For tickets or

The Scenic City Order of Good Cheer has announced their next project - a fabulous Activity Centre at Victoria
Park. The Order has a long tradition of great community projects and this project will enhance and help revitalize
the park and compliment the new Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre. The new park will feature a picnic
shelter, play and climbing areas and pickle ball courts. Planning for the new skate and bike park at Victoria Park
continues and we hope to have this underway this spring.
It’s hard to believe that it has already been one year since we opened the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation
Centre. Last year - when I was preparing for this summer guide, we were anticipating the opening. I hope you have
had a chance to enjoy this recreational and social hub in our community. If not - please plan to attend one of our
upcoming free Partner Days for City residents - May 5th and August 17th. This is a great opportunity to try out the
new facility and all it offers.

As the season for basketball winds down, it’s time to plan for next year’s programming.
Owen Sound Minor Basketball is in need of volunteers to step up and help operate the organization.
Without this, next year’s programming may be in jeopardy.
Owen Sound Minor Basketball has quality coaches to deliver the programs and the organization is financially
sound....it just needs a two or three individuals interested in giving back to the community to help operate the
organization so that our kids have the opportunity to continue to learn and play basketball.

NON-RESIDENT FEES
The City believes strongly in the benefits of recreation for children and supports a partnership approach.
The City also believes that City taxpayers should not bear an unequal amount of the cost of recreation.
Council has set the following non resident user fee (applicable to all non City residents &/or residents of
municipalities without Recreation Service Agreements with the City):
All ice sports: $167 per sport
Camps, specialty camps, swimming lessons field and floor sports: $100 per sport
Fee is payable for each sport.
Registration in an ice sport, field or floor sport allows registration at no additional cost in City run camps,
speciality camps or swimming lessons.

REFUND POLICY:
A $10.00 service charge applies to ALL refunds and changes in
participant schedules. A full refund minus the service charge will
be approved when:
a) A medical certificate verifying illness is provided OR
b) A refund request is submitted 2 weeks prior to start date
accompanied by receipt
Refunds will not be granted less than two weeks prior to start
date without medical documentation of illness.
TAX RECEIPTS:
Tax receipts will be available in February for all eligible camps.
A fee of $10 may be charged if an additional copy is requested.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:
City of Owen Sound Subsidy: The City of Owen Sound
provides financial assistance to qualified individuals (residents of
the City) for day camp and swimming lessons at Harrison Park.
Proof of income is required to assess the percentage of fee you
will pay. Application forms available at City Hall. Call 519-376-
1440 for more information.
National Child Benefit (NCB) – All camps and
swimming lessons
If your family lives in Grey County and your family earnings
are less than $35,000 a year you may be eligible. For more
information, contact NCB Coordinator at 519-371-0484 Ext.

PROGRAM CANCELLATION:
We reserve the right to cancel or alter any programs, times,
costs or locations outlined in this brochure, due to registration
numbers, policy change or availability of staff.
RETURNED (NSF) CHEQUES:
An administration fee of $20.00 will be charged for cheques
returned to us by your bank. Original cheques must be
replaced with cash or certified cheques.
CAMP INFORMATION

SWIMMING LESSONS
Swimming Lessons (Harrison Park Pools)
Harrison Park Swimming Lesson Registration:
Registration begins Tuesday April 30 at 7am at the
Family Y for all Harrison Park Swimming Lessons. You
do not need to be a Y member to partake in lessons.
Registrations must be made in person. Full payment
is due at time of registration. Proof of residency is
required.
Non-Residents: Swimmers whose principle residence
is not in the City of Owen Sound, are required to pay a
one-time annual fee of $100 per individual to register for
Harrison Park Pool Aquatic Programs. You may purchase
your non-resident pass at City Hall. If you already have
one, bring your current card with you when you register,
or registration cannot be completed.
• There is a Team Leader on duty during swimming les-
sons. If you have any questions or concerns regarding
your child’s lesson, please feel free to approach the Team
Leader on the pool deck.
• Our Swimming Instructors are also certified lifeguards!
They have gone through approximately 1000 hours of
training to become certified with the National Lifeguard
Service Award, and the YMCA and Lifesaving Society
Swimming Instructor award.
• We have lesson guards on duty during all swimming les-
sons as an ‘extra set of eyes’.
Is This Your Child’s First Time in Swimming
Lessons? Please feel free to bring your child for a tour
of the pools and change rooms to familiarize them with the
facility.
Showers and Access to the Pool: All swimmers must
shower with soap before entering the pool as per Ontario
Health Regulations. Please note that footwear is not allowed
on the pool deck. Entrance to the pool is through the change
rooms past the shower area. If your child requires assistance
after the lesson, please meet him/her at the entrance. Staff
will not let the child leave the pool deck until the parent/
guardian arrives.
Change Rooms: There is a male and female change
room. Children up to 5 years of age, who require assis-
tance by a parent/guardian, can change in either change
room. Children 6 years and older must change in the gender
appropriate change room.
First Day of Lessons: You may go to the change room
5 minutes before your child’s lesson is scheduled to begin.
Swim classes meet on the pool deck at the start time of the
lesson. Please make sure your child knows the swim level
he/she is enrolled in. Parents may accompany children to
the pool deck before the first lesson to meet the instructor.
Parent Participation Day: To find out how your child
is progressing, parents are invited to participate in the
pool with their child (1 adult per child please) for one les-
son! Classes will end 5-10 minutes early these days to give
you a chance to speak to your child’s Instructor about their
progress. If you do not wish to go in the pool, take the time
after class to find out how your child is progressing. Please
let our Team Leader know of any concerns you may have as
they come up. No shoes on deck please! Dates for Parent
Participation Day are as follows:
Harrison Park: Session 1: June 17
Session 2: July 15
Session 3: July 29
Session 4: August 19
Again and Again….Each swimming level has a certain
number of items that must be performed correctly a minimum
of 3 times in order for that item to be complete (according
to the standards set by YMCA Canada and the Lifesaving
Society.) If a child is unable to complete all of the items dur-
ing a session, we view this as an “incomplete”, not a failure.
Swimming skills have still been learned but more practice is
required. It is not unusual to repeat the same swim level sev-
eral times before mastering the necessary skills and acquir-
ing the endurance that is necessary.
Rainy Days at Harrison Park: Lessons will NOT be can-
celled. If there is a thunder storm, children will be removed
from the pool area and water safety will be taught.
Lost and Found: Please leave all valuables at home. At
Harrison Park you can store all of your belongings in the
tote baskets available at the front entrance during lesson
times. The Harrison Park Pool is not responsible for lost or
stolen items. Lost and found items will be kept for two weeks
in the tote room.
Refund Policy for all Swimming Lessons:
Fees are refundable prior to start date of first class.
Refunds will not be given on or after the start of the
program except for medical reasons. Medical reasons
require a doctor’s note. A service charge of $10.00 is
applicable to every refund.

Children who have started but not completed the
Preschool program can continue in the Learn-to-Swim
program once they are 6 years old. (Refer to chart at

Harrison Park Aquatic Specialty Camps
Join us at the pool for half-day camps exclusively in the water! All camps run 8:30am-12noon. Fees are listed below.
Campers should bring a swim suit, towel, sunscreen and a snack.
Aquatic Leadership & Lifeguard Certification Courses will be held at the Y. Please see page 50 for course information.

Harrison Park Pool Admission Requirements: Swimmers must be 10 years old to swim by themselves.
Swimmers who are 6-9 years old: Must pass the swim test to swim by themselves; ~ OR ~ Can be accompanied in the water and
directly supervised by a parent or guardian who is 14 years of age or older with the following ratios of supervisors to swimmers: 1 supervisor
to 4 swimmers not wearing lifejackets; 1 supervisor to 8 swimmers wearing lifejackets
Swimmers who are 0-5 years old: Must be accompanied in the water and directly supervised at all times by a parent or guardian 14
years of age or older regardless of their swimming ability (1 supervisor to 2 swimmers).
Swim Test – must be able to swim 2 widths of the shallow pool using proper front crawl or breaststroke without stopping in order to swim
unaccompanied in both pools.
These requirements are in accordance with Ontario Health Regulations for Public Pools and are supported by The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

HARRISON PARK DAY CAMP INFORMATION
Our Camps are designed to provide your child with the
opportunity to play, grow and meet friends within a safe, positive
environment. We focus on: increasing self-esteem, learning new
skills while having fun, co-operating with and respecting others.
TO REGISTER
CAMP REGISTRATION BEGINS May 1st to
April 30th AT 7am FOR ALL CAMPS!
Registration can be made in person or by phone (519-376-
0484). Registrations made by phone require full payment by
credit card. Spots are filled on a first come first served basis. All
children must be registered at least 24 hours in advance. If you
are sending your child to camp on a Monday, he/she must be
registered by no later than 3pm the previous Friday.
CAMP HOURS:
Drop off after 8am and pick up before 5pm. Programmed camp
hours are 9am-4:30pm. See below for extended supervision
options.
EXTENDED SUPERVISION FEES:
Early Drop Off: between 7:00-8:00am
- $2.50 per day
Late Pick Up: between 5:00-5:30pm
- $2.50 per day
SPECIALTY CAMPS: Early drop-off and late pick-up
between 7-8am & 5-5:30pm - $25 per
week *

If you would like to take advantage of this service,
you must specify and pay at time of registration. You
will be billed at the end of the month for any extra
charges you have incurred.
LATE FEES: If you pick your child up after 5:30pm
you will be charged an extra fee. Fees are as follows:
- between 5:30pm - 5:45pm - additional $5
- between 5:45pm - 6:00pm - additional $10
- for every minute past 6:00pm, an additional $1 will be
added
You will be billed at the end of the month to cover any extra
charges you have incurred.
Staff: Great care is taken in the hiring and training of our staff.
All of the camp staff have been trained in YMCA Healthy Child
Development recognized under the High Five Quality Assurance
Program. All senior staff are certified in CPR and First Aid. Staff
are selected on the basis of experience, skills and genuine
commitment to children. All staff undergo many hours of pre-
camp training to ensure quality programming.
Behaviour Management Philosophy: Our goal is
to provide a healthy, safe and secure environment for all
participants. Day Camp staff and managers will redirect
camper behaviour and respond to inappropriate choices on an
individual basis. Children who attend our camps are expected
to follow the behaviour guidelines and interact appropriately
in a group. If a situation arises where a participant threatens
the safety or security of another participant, or if a participant
shows disregard for camp guidelines, we will inform and
work with parents to correct the child’s behaviour in order to
provide a positive camp experience for everyone. However,
should disruptive behaviour continue, the participant may be
dismissed from camp at the discretion of the Camp Director.
The City of Owen Sound and Family Y will not be held
responsible for any costs associated with a participant’s
dismissal, including camp fees. Refunds will not be granted if
a child is asked to leave our programs due to misbehaviour.
Holidays:
• Harrison Park Camps will not run August 6-9.
Educational Assistants: If your child has an E.A. at school,
they will be required to have someone assist them at camp.
Parents are required to make these arrangements for their
children. Please inform us at time of registration.
SIGN IN / SIGN OUT PROCEDURES:
If your child is registered but will not be attending camp, we ask that you call the Y (376-0484) as soon as possible for
any camp.
Sign In: Upon arrival at Day Camp, it is important that the staff on duty are aware that your child(ren) has arrived. Please sign
your child(ren) in. We also require that you indicate who will be picking your child up from camp at the end of the day. This is
the only person(s) that we will send your child home with. If this is not cleared before hand we will call you for verbal permission
before releasing your child.
Sign Out: At the end of the day it is very important that you or an authorized individual pick up your child(ren), and that the
staff on duty is aware that you and your child are leaving. You must sign your child out each day. A handwritten, signed note is
requested if your child is able to leave on his/her own at the end of the day.
SUMMER CAMPS

Medications: Any medication your child is taking while at
camp must be prescribed by a doctor and be left with the Camp
Director in the morning upon arrival. All medication must be in
the original package with instructions for dosage. A consent form
must be signed for the medication to be administered. Please
advise camp staff of medication changes so we can monitor or
expect any changes in the child and their behaviour.
In Case of Injury or Illness: If a trip to the hospital is
necessary, a staff member will accompany your son or daughter,
and one of our staff will contact you as soon as possible. If
your child becomes ill while at camp, staff will contact a family
member to take the child home.
Photographs: Any photographs taken of your child while
at camp by an employee or representative of the City or Y,
will become the property of the City or Y, and may be used
for various promotional purposes. If you or your family wishes
otherwise, please inform the Y.
Lunches & Snacks: To be considerate of any children with
allergies we ask that families refrain from sending any food items
with peanuts or traces of nuts. Usage of vending machines during
camp hours is prohibited.
Lost & Found Items: We are not responsible for campers’
personal belongings if lost, stolen, or damaged. We will maintain
a “Lost and Found Bin” which will be accessible to parents. Items
left more than two weeks will be donated to a local charity.

responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.
Items to Leave at Home (do NOT bring to Camp):
• Electronic devices (besides a watch); Gameboys,DSIs,
MP3s, iPods, phones, etc.
• Toys from home (figures, cars, guns, dolls, etc.)
• Shoes with wheeled bottoms - this is a safety issue. Flip
Flops may NOT be worn but sport sandals and crocs
with a back strap are fine.
• Money - Pizza Days are the exception
