A Hearty Greetings!
Taking a tip from the speech of Vice President of America, Mr. Joe Biden during his recent visit
to India, trade between India and America is $100 billion; the same can be multiplied five
times within next five years with efforts from both governments and business community.
IAS, as an NGO has a role to play and we can contribute our might to facilitate for raising
revenue by promoting cultural, educational and economic activities between two countries.
Other NGO’s like us are already actively working on the same mission.

I heartily congratulate and thank devoted faculties, the secretarial staff, members of Executive
Committee and members at large of IAS for giving their full support to carry out activities of
IAS during my Presidentship in 2012-13. I have tried my best with my above team to deliver our
best. On revenue front, service tax front, additional academic activity, organising lectures-seminars-
conferences, workshop, members participation during meeting, IAS has done quite well.
It is rare that Past Presidents of any institution are remembered. This year on IAS’ 55th Founders Day we celebrated by honouring
our Past Presidents and also 16 citizens of India who contributed towards India’s growth. It was our honour to have Mr. Peter Haas,
Consul General of USA, as our Chief Guest during Founders Day and Guests of Honour like Mr. Satyapal Sing, Commissioner of Police,
Mumbai, Mrs. Indu Sahani, Former Sheriff of Mumbai and Dean of H. R. College, Mr. Joseph Massey, MD of MCX and Mr. Keshav
Murugesh, Global CEO, WNS & Co- Chairman, NASSCOM BPO Forum, who delivered their presentations to the 350 strong audience
at IES Auditorium on 29 April 2013.
All good things come to an end and now I shall be passing President Batton to new President from September 2013. A lot is needed
to be done to raise IAS’bar and, I am sure our new President will have all cooperation and support which I have received during my
regime in 2012-13. The 53rd Annual Report of IAS has covered all activities carried out by IAS during this period.
I have actively enjoyed being with IAS, during this year and I am available at IAS back whenever my services are required.

On Sunday 30th June American President Mr. Barrack Obama donned a teacher’s
hat to tell his young daughters how Mahatma Gandhi’s ‘Satyagraha’ had influenced
South African civil rights leader Nelson Mandela to fight apartheid and injustice in his
country.
On 18th July the entire South African nation celebrated the 95th birthday of Nelson
Mandela who blazed a trail against racism by non-violent means by following the
example set by Mahatma Gandhi.
While visiting robben island prison in South Africa President Barrack Obama told his
daughters Sasha and Malia how Mahatma Gandhi had started his non-violent political
struggle in South Africa .
He emphasized ‘one thing you guys might not be aware of is that the idea of political non-violence first took root
in South Africa because Mahatma Gandhi was a lawyer here in South Africa’. Thus Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson
Mandela became celebrities and world leaders in today’s history .
The United Nations observed 18th July 2013 as Nelson Mandela day when the Secretary General and former
President of USA Mr. Bill Clinton paid tributes to the world re known human rights leader Mr. Nelson Mandela (who
is ailing from a recurring lung infection), for his dedicated services to civil rights & racism in South Africa.
We at “Landmark” Indo-American Society pay our tributes to Mr. Nelson Mandela and greet him for celebrating his
95th Birthday on 18th July 2013 and appreciate President Obama’s gesture of paying a personal visit to him and
remembering India’s Mahatma Gandhi on this occasion.

5. Dr. S. Natarajan spoke on the awareness on the Complex Disorders
of Eye and the Need for Eye Care at a medical lecture held on May
29, 2013 at Indo-American Society.
Dr. Natarajan emphasized on the different categories of disorders
they are as below:
Corneal Opacities
Causes: Infection, injury, or inflammation of the eye are the most
common causes of corneal opacity.
Risk Factors: Vitamin A deficiency, Measles, Foreign body,
Chemical injury, Herpes simplex keratitis, Conjunctivitis, Contact
Lens abuse.
Treatment: 1. Scar tissue may be removed surgically. The surgery
may be performed using a laser, called phototherapeutic keratec-
tomy (PTK). 2. Cornea Transplant.
Prevention: Eye protection, Safety goggles, Proper care of contact
lenses, no abuse.
Glaucoma
These are disorders with a characteristic type of optic nerve dam-
age. The most effective way of preventing this damage is to lower
the intraocular pressure. On Visual field test – Characteristic field
loss due to damage to the retinal nerve fibres. Treatment includes
Intraocular pressure lowering eye drops or oral mediacations, in
resistant cases, filtering surgeries and drainage devices may be
useful.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Patient is symptomless or may have fluctuating vision or floaters.
Progressive stages may present with severe complications like
Vitreous hemorrhage, Retinal detachment, Neovascular glauco-
ma, Premature cataract. Investigations include Fundus fluorosce-
in angiography (FFA) and Optical coherence tomography (OCT)
to detect macular swelling and neovasculariation. Managment
includes laser treatment as the main stay therapy. Intravitreal ste-
roid/ anti-VEGF injections may be advised. Tractional retinal de-
tachment and Non resolving vitreous hemorrhage may require
surgical vitrectomy.

6. Macular hole
Difficulty with reading and close work, blurred and distorted cen-
tral vision. Home amsler’s test and OCT may be performed. Surgi-
cal closure is the only treatment is patient is symptomatic.
Vein Occlusions
More common in patients with systemic disorders, mainly hyper-
tension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, heart disorders, history of smoking.
Patient presents with sudden loss of painless vision, mainly due to
macular swelling. Treatment mainly includes Intravitreal steroid /
anti-VEGF injections & proper control of underlying systemic disor-
ders. Laser treatment may be required after FFA testing.
Age Related Macular Degeneration
ARMD is a condition that occurs when cells in the macula degen-
erate. Damage to the macula affects your central vision which is
needed for reading, writing, driving, recognising people’s faces
and doing other fine tasks. Smoking is associated with higher
rates of progression. Home Amsler’s chart monitoring at home is
an easy test to detect the progression. Treatment includes anti-
VEGF drugs include Ranibizumab (Lucentis®), Pegaptanib (Macu-
gen®), and Bevacizumab (Avastin®). Repeated injections are usu-
ally required and OCT is done to access the prognosis.
Retinal Detachment
It is a serious and sight-threatening event, occurring when the
retina becomes separated from its underlying supportive tissue.
The President Mr. Dilip Dalal organized a ‘Thank You Dinner –Post Found-
ers Day Celebration’ at the Banquet Room, West End Hotel to felicitate the
brains behind the celebration to make it a grand success.
The Taskforce core members Mr. Rusi B. Khambatta, Mrs. Asha A. Vakil,
Dr. V. Rangaraj, Mrs. Jayshree Sampat, Mr. Daksesh Parikh, were honoured
with a shawl by President Mr. Dilip Dalal and the rest of the Taskforce mem-
bers were presented with a bouquet by Past President Dr. B. R. Barwale.
The Secretariat staff were also appreciated for the work that they carried out
from day one.They were presented with bouquet by President Mr. Dilip Dalal.
The Faculty members of the Indo-American Society who are also the back-
bone were also honoured this day by Mr. Dilip Dalal who presented them
with a memento for their association with the Society.
Nostalgia – sharing experience by Mr. K. V. Satyamurty, Dr. V. Rangaraj,
Mr. Pramod Shah, Mrs. Asha Vakil were a great treat to watch.
Unless the retina is reattached soon, permanent vision loss may
result. Most common causes are Injury to the eye or face, Myopia,
Lasik Sx, Cataract surgery & Diabetic Retinopathy. Treatment is
surgery, as soon as possible, after cong-firming the patient is med-
ically fit to undergo the surgery. Scleral Buckling and Vitrectomy
with gas/silicone oil injection are the 2 main forms of repair done.
Endophthalmitis
Intraocular inflammation predominantly involving the anterior
chamber and the vitreous cavity of the eye. Typically patient
complains of severe red painful eye after intraocular surgery. Po-
tential risk for vision loss & collapse of the eye if not treated early.
Treatment includes topical antibiotic and pain relieving drops,
though this is less effective in most cases. Intravitreal injections
of higher antibiotics with vitrectomy and proper microscopy and
culture sensitivity is recommended.
There are many complex disorders of the eye, some may have
a favourable course with management and some may not. But
all that takes to make one content is Hope. The eyes indicate
the antiquity of the soul, reflecting dreams on its bay, ready to
take the leap of faith. The way to see by Faith is to shut the Eye
of Reason.
Every closed eye is not sleeping, and every open eye is not seeing.
Lets awaken and arise to serve the faith. In all, the lecture was very
interesting and informative to the members present. The audi-
ence exceeded the hall capacity.

Dr. Pettarusp Wadia MD DNB (Med) DM DNB (Neuro) a distin-
guished neurologist who is a consultant at Jaslok Hospital and
Research Centre where he also runs Movement Disorder clinic
spoke on Aging of the Brain. He has also done a 2 year fellow-
ship on Movement disorders from Toronto Western Hospital
University of Toronto. He is actively involved in conducting
clinical research, has many publications in international jour-
nals and presented several papers at national and international

lepsy in elderly”in 26th International Epilepsy congress at Paris.
Dr. Wadia spoke on 3 main disorders of the brain Strokes, Par-
kinson Disease Dementia & Alzheimer’s disease.
In a very interesting and educative power point presentation
he explained the reasons why the above disorders happen and
which remedies are available. Physical and mental exercise can
reduce cognitive decline associated with aging. In addition to
pharmacotherapy neuro rehabilitation is important in man-
agement of neurologic disorders of the elderly.
He rightly said “THE BRAIN IF YOU DON’T USE IT YOU LOOSE
IT” so always keep your brain mentally active. The lecture was
followed by lively question and answer session.

10. President, Mr. Dilip Dalal, presenting memento to Mr. Ashok Chowgule,
Industrialist & Economist
This talk by Ashok Chowgule, Industrialist & Economist was
held on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at The Lincoln Auditorium,
Indo-American Society.
Mr. Chowgule spoke about the post-independence period,
where there was a general consensus amongst economists all
over the world that for India to quickly deal with the problem
of poverty there was a need to plan the use of resources in an
optimum way. These plans were worked out on the basis of
knowledge available then. However, by the end of the 1950s, it
was clear that the objectives were not being achieved.
Mr.ChowgulefeltthatInsteadofrevisitingtheinitialassumptions
made, the economists thought that what was needed was
more planning, rather than follow another paradigm. Yet, the
objectiveswerenotbeingachieved,andthecountrygrewatrate
of 3% p.a. up till 1980. In a sort of desperation, some important

changes were made. The economy started to grew by 5% p.a.
However, the basic issues were not being addressed, and there
was a sort of crisis in 1990. More reforms were implemented on

ended with the optimism & hope that India would do well in the
economic field in the years to come.
Given what has happened in the last two or three years, it is
once again necessary to make an attempt to analyse the past in
a dispassionate manner, so that we can come out with enduring
solutions.

About the Speaker:
Mr. Ashok Chowgule was born in Goa in 1948 and completed
schooling in Belgaum in 1964. Then did Graduation in
Economics and Statistics in UK (Bristol University) and Post-
Graduation in Business Studies in USA (Case Western Reserve
University). He returned back to India to join the family business
with interests in Iron Ore Mining and Exports, Shipping,
Shipbuilding, Industrial Explosives, etc. The family also runs
Education Institutes, including a College in Goa. Presently in
charge of Shipbuilding, based in Goa. He has kept his interests
in the subject of economic development, and have contributed
in his own way in discussions at Industry Forums.

levels, so people can enjoy every moment
of life. According to Dr. Joshi music can
help one achieve their goals, shed one’s
bad habits, attain inner peace and more.
• The program focussed on singing together of meaningful
and philosophised songs, based on devotion and spirituality
and focussing on Musical Yoga.
• The program also emphasized on Goal Setting and Mental
Strength with Music and Pranayama and Omkar Sadhana in
different Ragas.
• The program was designed to help participants forget all
their worries, stress & live in the present. It helped to learn
to live without discrimination and with eauality igniting
the emotitional and spiritual quotient, manage anger,
help forgive and channelize oneself to fruitful activity. The

13. A hastily written note by former US President Abraham
Lincoln just two months before his assassination, ordering
the release of a disabled 14-year-old boy from the Army, is
expected to fetch $15,000 at an auction.
The message saying‘Let this boy be discharged’, and signed A
Lincoln was written after a telegram from Colonel Thomas W
Harris about his son, Perry.
It had been in a private collection and was valued at $15,000
by Nathan Raab of the Raab Collection, which offered the

previously unknown document for sale in Philadelphia.
The letter is considered rare because there are few Lincoln
documents relating to children.
Lincoln’s order came just two months before he was
assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theatre on April
15, 1865. Ironically, Perry Harris was discharged from the
Army the same day.
“It shows the type of person [Lincoln] was and how he was
defined by clemency. When you see it’s involving a father and
his son, it strikes a personal chord and likely did for Lincoln.
He was a father of four who lost all but one of his sons,” Raab
said.
Harris sent his telegram on February 6, 1865, to Illinois
Senator Lyman Trumbull and General John M Palmer,
pleading, “My son Perry Harris 14 years old insane crippled
has been mustered in 55th Kentucky regiment. Please have
Secretary of War order him discharged. Col Thos W Harris of
Shelbyville, Ill.”
Indian-American Srikanth Srinivasan on Friday scripted his-
tory after he was confirmed as the first South Asian judge to
America’s second highest court. Described as‘trailblazer’by US
President Barack Obama, Chandigarh-born Srinivasan’s nomi-
nation to the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia
Circuit was unanimously approved by the Senate with 97 vot-
ing in favour. With Senate confirmation, 46-year-old Srinivasan
has become the first Indian-American to be appointed to the
top American court.
He was first nominated by Obama on June 11, 2012. On Janu-
ary 2, 2013, his nomination was returned to the President, due
to the sine die adjournment of the Senate. On January 3, 2013,
Obama re-nominated him for the same office.
Srinivasan was born in Chandigarh, and grew up in Lawrence,
Kansas. He received his BA with honours and distinction in
1989 from Stanford University and his JD (Juris Doctor) with
distinction in 1995 from Stanford Law School, where he was
elected to Order of the Coif and served as an editor of the Stan-
ford Law Review. He also holds an MBA from the Stanford Grad-

Meanwhile, prominent Indian-Americans hailed the historic
nomination.
Congressman Ami Bera, the only serving Indian-American law-
maker in the current Congress, said he was thrilled at the unan-
imous confirmation of Srinivasan by the US Senate.“I’m thrilled
that the Senate confirmed Sri Srinivasan to the DC Circuit Court
of Appeals today,”said Bera.

14. In a first of its kind of reverse technology sharing between India
and the US, an innovative Explosive Detection Kit developed by
Indian scientists would be manufactured in America and sold
globally for quick detection and identification of combinations
of explosives.
The India-developed US-manufactured Explosive Detection Kit
(EDK) was launched at the US Chamber of Commerce building
in Washington – a block away from the White House on Friday.
This was probably for the first time that technology developed
by Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO)
was being manufactured and marketed in the US, officials and
industry partners said. “We are hoping
that (technology transfer) would be a two
way street,” former US Defence Secretary
William S Cohen said, adding that this is
a very significant step. He described it
as a very “excellent example” of reverse
technology transfer.
Reny M Roy, the Indian scientist who
developed this technology, said the
EDK kits have been successfully used
in preventing several terrorists’ attacks and even immediately
detecting the type of explosive used in the event of a bomb
blast. The German Bakery blast is one of such instances, she
pointed out.“It is an analytical tool which can avert disaster.This
little box can work as a pre-blast analytical tool and as a post-
blast investigative tool,”Roy said, adding that they have now also
developed a pocket size use and dispose explosive detection kit.
BeingcommercialisedaspartofaprogrammecalledDRDO-FICCI
Accelerated Technology Assessment and Commercialisation
(ATAC), the two sides have entered into a Licensing Agreement
with a US based-firm Crowe and Company of South Carolina for
manufacturing the Kit.
Developed by a constituent DRDO laboratory, High Energy
Material Research Laboratory in Pune, the EDK is developed
for quick detection and identification of explosives based on
any combination of nitro-esters, nitramines, trinitrotoluene,
dynamite or black powder.
The test results can be obtained in two-three minutes in field
conditions as well as in laboratory conditions at ambient
temperature. One of the salient features of the Kit is its ability to
detect combinations of explosives in IEDs.
Plastic explosives based on RDX fail to be detected by most
electronic detectors, but EDK being a chemical-based kit can
efficiently detect plastic explosives. The Kit is portable, cost
effective and can be used in both pre-blast and post-blast
scenarios even in contaminated conditions. It is being used by
bomb detection and disposal squads of the Army, paramilitary
forces and police in India.
“It marks an important milestone in the process of evolution of
the India-US Strategic Partnership,” Indi-

frontier in co-operation, which would in-
volve technology, innovation in the field
of defence.
The event reflects the fact that the In-
dian defence research institutions have
emerged world class, nation building
technologies and solution providers for
many global problems, she added.
Fay Crowe, president of Crowe and Company, which has
established its manufacturing base in South Carolina said that
the US Army, the Department of Homeland Security and other
American law enforcement agencies are in the evaluation
process. “This kit has a much better field deployable position
than other items. We have just signed an agreement with a
US company to take the technology to South America. The
technology would be presented to the Columbian Defense
Ministry and to Panama and across the world,”Crowe said.
It is India which holds the patent on the technology, and Crowe
has paid an unspecified amount to commercialise it in the US
and would also pay royalty on the EDK kits sold. “Yes”, she said
when asked if Boston bombings could have been prevented if
the technology was available in the US at that time.“I believe that
it could have been deployed in Boston and with proper training
if the kits were in use…at large events, it would every easy to
implement a posture where you can detect explosives,”she said.

The news of the death of Dr. Amar Bose of the Bose Sound Inc.
in the US is indeed shocking as it indicates the end of a wizard
who pioneered the technology on sound acoustics. An electrical
engineer by qualification, who got his PHD in the MIT, Boston, in the
US. Born to an Indian father Nani Gopal Bose, a freedom fighter in
India, who fled from the British-ruled India in 1920 and got married
an American school teacher, Amar Bose had interests in radios and
elements concerned with sound / music being a violinist himself.
From his childhood radio repairing days he rose to be a world
famous entrepreneur, was declared as the first Indian billionaire in
the US. His sound acoustic technology has been accepted the Sistine
Chapel inVatican has his sound system. Many sports stadiums boast
of Bose’s sound system. He used to be very proud of his Indian roots

Asia to succeed Robert
Blake, according to PTI. Subject to confirmation by the Senate,
Nisha Desai Biswal, who is currently the Assistant Administra-
tor for Asia at the US Agency for International Development (
USAID), will replace incumbent Blake to head the South Asia
bureau in the US State Department. Desai is expected to be-
come the first person of Indian- origin to head the bureau,
which oversees US foreign policy and relations with India, Paki-
stan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and
Bhutan.
Biswal’s nomination by Obama on Thursday came along with
announcements for seven other senior administration level
positions.

Afghanistan and Pakistan, the designation currently held by
Jim Dobbins.
From 2005 to 2010, Biswal was the Majority Clerk for the
State Department and Foreign Operations Subcommittee
on the Committee on Appropriations in the US House of
Representatives.
From 2002 to 2005, she served as the Policy and Advocacy

tel science bash in what’s now
par for course, but although
the top prize eluded them, the
most electrifyingbreakthrough
came from Indian-American
high-schooler. A device she
has developed can fully charge
a cell phone in 20 to 30 sec-
onds in what will be a boon
for a gazillion mobile users
who need to juice up their cell
phones quickly.
Eesha Khare, 18, of Saratoga,
California received the Intel
Foundation Young Scientist
Award of $50,000 for develop-
ing a fast-charging superca-
pacitor that fits inside a cell phone, charge the battery in un-
der a minute, and hold it for long. Khare says the device will
also result in batteries that can last for 10,000 charge-recharge
cycles, compared with 1,000 cycles for conventional recharge-
able batteries.
“My cellphone battery always dies,” she told journalists in
Phoenix where the annual Intel science fiesta for young
gearheads took place last week, in an obvious explanation
for why she had worked on energy-storage technology,
besides the fact that it allowed her to focus on her interest
in nanochemistry. She said the technology also has potential
applications for car batteries and other devices, while declaring
she will be going to Harvard this fall to pursue research in
nanochemistry.
Neither Eesha nor Intel offered any details of the breakthrough,
which if validated, would be worth tens, if not hundreds of
millions of dollars, revolutionizing battery technology across
the board, from mobile devices to computers and cars. The
award cited Eesha for “Design and Synthesis of Hydrogenated
TiO2-Polyaniline Nanorods for Flexible High-Performance,”
geek-speak for developing a new kind of supercapacitor.
Typically, supercapacitors have higher energy density than
conventional batteries.
To think that phone and battery companies would have
overlooked the magic bullet of fast charging battery, manna
to all gadget junkies, seems almost inconceivable, but to
paraphrase the popular tv program of yesteryears: Kids to the
darnedest things.
Meantime, the top prize of $75,000, called the Gordon Moore
Award after Intel’s legendary co-founder, went to Ionut
Budisteanu, 19, of Romania for using artificial intelligence
to create a viable model for a low-cost, self-driving car. The
teenager’s work found wide appreciation for addressing a major
global issue. In 2004, car accidents caused 2.5 million deaths
worldwide and 87 percent of crashes resulted from driver error.
With 3-D radar and mounted cameras, Ionut created a feasible
design for an autonomously controlled car that could detect
traffic lanes and curbs, along with the real-time position of the
car - and it would only cost $4,000. Again, this is something
many companies, notably Google, has been working on. But
the technology from established companies is expected to be
far more expensive.
Indian teens also won other prizes, including the top prize
for mathematical sciences going to Vinay Iyengar and the top
prize for environmental sciences going to Naomi Shah, both of
Portland, Oregon.
